How to combat an XBBB list with the Empire

By Englishpete, in X-Wing

It is a generally bad list for pretty much any Empire list I can think up. In all honesty, I think 3 Firesprays might be the best option, but you'd need to take Wedge first as his ability with PtL is nasty even on Sprays.

2 Options IMO

Option 1

Try flying this list

Kath Scarlet (38)

Marksmen (3)

Rebel Captive (3)

Omnicron Pilot (21)

Vader (3)

Omnicron Pilot (21)

Senso Jammer (4)

Heavy Laser Cannon (7)

Total: 100 pts.

I find this to be a pretty nasty build,

Only played it 2 or 3 times, but haven't lost with it yet, and seems to hold up very well, and I haven't lost a ship yet.

First off you have 30 hp which is pretty nice

That's a lot of dmg.

In one game with this build I had wedge with 2-3 stress tokens.

Now your opponent is trying to decide which to kill first.

Vader is sick. Free crit. Plus the shuttle has 3 attack dice.

Another shuttle with HLC which is going to sit back and hurt

Kath flying around stressing everyone out. Which makes it a lot easier for your shuttles to focus fire

Using their 0 action and cause all kind of collisions, Kath can have her way

If they go after Kath they get a stress token which will slow them down.

If they go after shuttles instead Kath just recks havoc.

Your main objective would be all focus fire on wedge.

Kill wedge.

With Kath, Vader on a shuttle, and another with HLC shouldn't be much of a problem.

Try it out if you haven't already. I can't see how this would fail.

Another list that would be fun just to try.

4 shuttles lol.

40 HP would be disgusting

Plus you still have 16 pts left for upgrades

Couple APL on couple

Vader on another

HLC on another

Honestly neither of these lists scare me if I'm running Wedge and 3 Blue Squadron's.

Total hit points are 29 for the Rebels vs 30 for the Imperials. The Rebels have a decided advantage with 1 extra ship firing back.

More than likely Wedge stays at range 3 the first round of firing. At that point it will be challenging for all 3 of your ships to have both range and keep him within their arcs. I think it's highly probable that he gets a minimum of 2 rounds of shots off. Add the fire power of 3 B's concentrating all firepower against the same ship and one of your shuttles has not only been traded for Wedge but the Rebels have more than likely started inflicting damage on another one of your ships and will likely have taken minimal damage themselves.

If you've used Vader to finish off Wedge you just speeded up the process of killing your own Omicron. And I'm not saying Vaders bad because he's awesome but against B's with a stack of shields his ability is lessened considerably.

Consider this: a Shuttle has the exact same attack (3), agility (1), and shields (5). It has 5 hull vs 3 for a B-Wing. The B-Wing though is significantly more maneuverable. In terms of staying power a B-Wing is extremely similar to a Shuttle. The difference of having 1 extra attacker is significant allowing the Rebels to take you out faster than you can take them out.

In a GSC I had used a Biggs plus 3 Blue equipped with AS and went against a list with 3 Shuttles plus Soontir. I lost 1 ship. Could my opponent have used a different strategy? Sure but I don't think it would have made a major difference. She went on to not lose another match the rest of the day and took 3rd place. I ended up 2nd with my only loss coming to.........aA modified swarm w/ 2 squints and 4 eye balls.

The more I look at this, the more and more I think the answer is the swarm, which is pretty sad as this list is becoming very common.

I think wave 4, with its Defender and Phantom may bring this list to heel, but both of those ships will mean that you will have at most 3 in a list even in combo, or you are back to the swarm answer.

I am looking forward to Whisper, as I think that pilot is a rebel ace killer.

The only way to counter Wedge's BBB is a complete anti-list:

"The Empires Least Wanted"

Winged Gundark (15)

Maarek Stele (34)
TIE Advanced (27), Cluster Missiles (4), Marksmanship (3)

"Fel's Wrath" (23)

Captain Kagi (28)
Lambda-Class Shuttle (27), Intelligence Agent (1)

Cluster Missiles, believe it or not.

They're great against B-Wings, as you get a combined 6 dice of attack against a combined 2 dice of agility.

Particularly good if you're flying Jonus alongside.

Now, for taking out Wedge, I'd suggest high numbers and HP total. He can only devastate one ship per attack, after all.

So, that leaves me with a single thought process. You're using at least 1 bomber (Jonus). Do you want to fill out the rest of your list with Bombers with Clusters, or go the slightly more insane method and go with Advanced Ties with Clusters instead?

Regardless of the chosen ship, the cheapest option in both instances gives you 4 ships with missiles on board. Using Scimitars gives you 18 additional points with which to work, while the Tempests give you 3.

Choosing the Tie Advanced gives you 1 less HP, but far greater survivability overall

(-3 Hull, +2 Shields, +1 agility die, + evade action)

Is that worth 5 points a ship? Perhaps. Perhaps you wish instead to double-down on your Cluster Missiles instead, leaving you with 6 points left.

5 Scimitars + Clusters then?

Jonus + 3 Scimitars + Clusters + X ?
