List Design: Horton For the Win

By Revanchist, in X-Wing

So on Sunday we had our casual X-wing game. I had been running the Baron's Focus for the past two weeks and had a flawless track record, annihilating the Rebel Scum. Thus, I decided to give them an experimental list that involves my favorite Rebel pilot of all time: Horton Salm. To that end I built the following list:

Horton + 2 PT

Kyle + ST + Moldy + BT + RecSpec

ORS + APL + Falcon + IA + Nav

And it did amazing! It wiped the floor with us. The BH took both PTs to the face, killing it by the fourth combat turn. By the eighth combat turn only soontir was left with 1 HP facing Kyle with 1 HP, Horton with 5, and the ORS with two shields lost, so we conceded the game. I was really impressed by it as a whole.

I definitely need to do more playtesting, but how competitive do you feel this is? Would you use this list at a tourney? Is there any way that this can/should be modified to make it more effective? I know that when Flechette Torps come out I plan on using those instead, then either add a named Astromech or ditch the Falcon title and put an ICT on him.

Lately, I've come around to putting a stock R5 astromech into the Ys. Helps defend against crits in those turns when the Ys end up a bit out of the action from a too-wide turn.

Seems a decent list otherwise. It's one I could easily see myself playing.

Cracken is what Horton needs:

Horton Salm (37)
Y-Wing (25), Proton Torpedoes (4), Proton Torpedoes (4), Blaster Turret (4)

Rookie Pilot (21)

Rookie Pilot (21)

Airen Cracken (21)
Z-95 Headhunter (19), Swarm Tactics (2)

Looks decently solid, although I'd definitely put either an R2 or R5 on Horton than the Falcon title on the ORS--probably an R5, seeing as he has a turret. Your major problem will be with Horton getting killed before he can get off the second torp; if your opponent gets to range one before it's launched, he'll probably get focused down. But a Blaster + Recon HWK isn't too shabby, either.

I like it. Does Kyle usually hold onto his Focus or pass it to the ORS?

I've tried a squad with Jan and Horton that was a lot of fun, but it got stomped flat by 3 Amigos and a bomber/interceptor squad at a tournament. I'll admit I made some bone-headed mistakes that really cost me the games, but they would have been tough games either way.

One thing you have going for you is two turrets instead of one. The ORS' high health probably helps, too, though it looks as though you pretty much ignored that target.
