Placed Second in Tournament with Old school XXXX list

By Zoccola, in X-Wing Battle Reports

This was my list:

Wedge + PTL + R2

Biggs

Rookie

Rookie

Every round I tried to place as many asteroids on my side of the table as possible. People seem to not want any near them, whereas I WANT to fly through them on my joust for a couple of reasons:

1) they provide defensive cover for my ships

2) once we fly past each other, I can kturn with ease, whereas my opponent has to worry about turning into asteroids. This gave me an advantage on 3 out of 4 games.

First round I was up against:

Krassis + HLC + Recon Specialist

Jonus + Squad Leader

Howlrunner

Academy Tie

My first priority was burning down Krassis. He was the oomph in my opponent's list. So using asteroids as cover, Biggs tanking for his 3 wingmen. On turn one, the Krassis had no more shields. Biggs lost 1 shield. On turn 2 Biggs was down to a single hull point and Krassis was vapourized. After that it was mop up. On turn3 I kturned everything, he had to make hard 3 turns and some barrel rolls. Wedge and Biggs took rb3 shots at Howlrunner and evaporated her. Turn 4 Wedge landed 2 crits on Jonus, who finally finished off Biggs. The rookies damaged the final tie. Turn 5, Wedge finished off Jonus and both Rookies killed the Academy. End of the match, Wedge and a Rookier were untouched, the second rookie had no shields. Full win.

Second round I was up against:

Howlrunner + Swarm Tactics

Mauler Mithel + Swarm Tactics

Academy Tie

Academy Tie

Alpha Squadron

Alpha Squadron

I was worried about this list. It was played by one of my friends who always beats me. Same setup again with a field of asteroids in front of my. We both flew tight formations and didnt come into range until the third turn, where Wedge one shot an Alpha Squadron pilot. Biggs took significant damage on that turn and just managed to sneak away with 1 hull point. So I flew him away from my group, forcing him to send some ships to deal with him and get out of the howlbubble. I was also manuevering like a god this game. My ships were slidding into gaps with a mm to spare on each side. Next turn saw me drop the other Alpha Squadron to 1 hull (with a damaged engine) and kill Mauler. And now the kturning. Wedge and Biggs focused on Howlrunner and killed her. Then Biggs died to another Academy tie. Next turn I wiffed on everything and he brought both rookies down to 1 and 2 hull points (he couldnt concentrate his fire.) Final turn Wedge finished off the Alpha Squadron. The time ran out. I had 75 points left of the field and he had 2 Academies coming in at 24. Full win.

Third round I was up against:

Jonus + Squad Leader + Concussion Missile

Scimitar Squadron + Cluster Missile + Cluster Missile

Scimitar Squadron + Cluster Missile + Cluster Missile

Academy Tie

Academy Tie

Same deployment with the asteroids. I was really worried about those clusters and Jonus, so I flew a bit more aggressively than I should have (I should have tried to stay at RB3.) Round one was manuevering, round 2 he had some long range laser shots at my flank. My idea was to come in RB1 on round 3 and pop one of the bombers, and I should have, but my luck ran out. I rolled horribly. I only managed to reduce 1 bomber to 2 hull, but it was crit with Engine Hit (all turns are red maneuvers). Biggs ate a cluster missile which brought him to 2 hull. Turn four some k turning, focused on the other bomber, missed completely. With everyone. Biggs bought it. Wedge brought down to 1 hull point. Turn five, wedge drops Jonus to 3 hull (with another Engine hit: all turns = red), eats another cluster missile and dies. Left with 2 rookies vs his whole list, not looking good. And then he gives me a chance. He made jonus and the damaged bomber make hard turns. While stressed. I smile and made Jonus fly off the board and the damaged bomber to land on an asteroid. No damage but it was out of the fight. Concentrated on the last bomber and did heavy damage to it, crit twice, Weapon Malfunction, and Minor Hull Breath. Next turn, he makes the same mistake, and makes the stressed bomber take a now red turn. I moved it straight 4 across the table to another asteroid. Manages to evade that too. Finish off the bomber, the ties kill one rookie. Its now two ties and a far off half crippled bomber vs a rookie without shields. Rookie fails to do anything appreciably, dies to the ties. Loss.

Fourth round I was up against:

Wedge + Swarm Tactics + R5-K6 + Shield Upgrade

Rookie Pilot

Rookie Pilot

Rookie Pilot

Almost a mirror match.I ended up having initiative, which was HUGE in this game.) I manuevered very conservatively the first 2 turns, allowing him to shoot at me long range through the asteroids. Third turn I turned into all his ships and focused on his Wedge. My Wedge brought him down to 2 hull. His Wedge nailed Biggs and knocked off his shields. Biggs finished off his Wedge. My rookies took one of his rookies down to no shields. His rookies damaged one of mine and brought Biggs down to one hull. Next turn I kturned, Wedge and Biggs blast a rookie apart, my rookies blind one of his. his sole rookie that can fire kills Biggs. Wedge kills the blinded rookie, my rookies finish the final rookie. Full win.

Going to another tournament this weekend, going to see if I use the same list or try something else. I have gotten very good with this list.

Nice games mate and I said it in multiple topics that list is by far my favorite and play like a charm.

I also sees the xxxx squad beying played more and more.

Beautiful call on the asteroid placement. Killer strategy. I could totally see that working. Gonna try it next time fo shizzle!

I go with similar asteroid placement when I play my Ion list (YYBB with ICTs and Ion Cannons). Fly past the asteroids, ion your enemy, and watch them crash into the rocks.

Solid list, always fun to run Biggs/Wedge. I do wonder how this fairs against a good 7 TIE swarm player, or in the b-wing heavy meta, can the X's compete with the high hp B's?

I never played again a swarm but I am dropping B-Wings like flies.
