First Competitive Play: Small Force, Need Advice!

By Eladamri, in X-Wing

Hi everybody, I'm about to embark on an adventure in the form of my first competitive tournament.

I love the rebel scum, and my main problem is a lack of miniatures....

I own 2 X-wing, 1 B-wing, 2 A-wing (for some reason), the YT-1300, the HWK, 1 Y-wing.

So competitively I can't use a dual B-wing nor tripple X-wing list.....

Here's what im using:

26

Any tips/advice/changes would be much appreciated!

A few thoughts:

The Hwk has pretty poor maneuverability, so even with a turret, it is likely to end up out of the fight at times because it takes so long to 'come around.'

Ywings aren't bad, but can suffer without a turret, otherwise they're only throwing 2 dice per attack, which is rough against 3 Agility ships.

R2D2 isn't great on a Ywing, because they have so few Green maneuvers.

Sensor Jammer is okay, but Fire Control System might be more useful.

Garven is fine as is

Blue is fine as is, but people here will tell you FCS or AdvS... Personally, I like the SJ, it seems to save 2-3 hits a game... but the fact that you can't use AdvS sucks

Dutch - drop R2D2 and add an Ion Cannon Turret

Rebel Op - now that Dutch has a turret, you can get rid of this and replace it with a Rookie

So, yeah, you would need to drop SJ down to AdvS or FCS in order to make this work. I'd suggest AdvS since you'll have lots of Focus and TL floating around from Dutch/Garven in the opening of the game, and at the end, the AdvS will be gold (focus then K turn, or BR then maneuver - both of which will give you a huge advantage late in the game).

Don't fret, you have the perfect ingredients for an AABXX squad.

1 • Rookie Pilot (21)
2 • Rookie Pilot (21)
3 • Prototype Pilot (17)
4 • Prototype Pilot (17)
5 • Dagger Squadron Pilot (24)

Wonder how that would play if you made the Dagger into Roark with a turret...

Or XXBY.

Garven (26)

Red (23)

Gold w. Ion (23)

Dagger with Adv Sensors (27)

99pts. Or throw an R2 on the Y or one of the Xs to make it 100.

This gets you 3 attacks at PS4 or above, so you can try and wipe Rookies, BH, Academy Pilots, and more before they get to shoot. Even against Daggers/Reds/Black Sq/Etc you'll still be garuanteed your attack.

He won't have Adv Sensors unless he has a Lambda Shuttle.

Here's my suggestion

100 pts

Garven

Dutch + R2 + Ion Turret

Blue + Fire Control System

Rookie

Agree with khyros.

Garven

Dutch with ion

Blue with AdvS

Rookie

This is a solid list. You're only spending 8 points in upgrades, and they are well spent. You will have to practice flying at range 2, as both garven and dutch abilities are range 1-2 abilities, and you may run up against Assault missile squads. You've got 3 3-dice guns, plus dutch for ion control. Lots of free tokens to be had will make your attacks more potent.

Good luck, gave fun, and make some new friends. :)

He won't have SJ unless he has a Lambda, so he obviously does have a Lambda.

This is a pretty nice squad for a first tourney. A good spread of ships. Reasonable PS. Good firepower and a few nice mobility tricks with Adv. Sensors on the B and Expert handling on Chewie.

50 points
Chewbacca
Expert Handling, Gunner, Nien Nunb
27 points
Dagger Squadron Pilot
Advanced Sensors
23 points
Red Squadron Pilot

Not really enough points to equip the turret and a Recon spec. Rebel Operative works though.

Unless you mean ion turret. Which might be cool.

What would you do with Adv Sensors on the dagger?

Everything. It allows you to take your action before your maneuver, which is great considering how much red there is on the dial. Plus you can hide behind an asteroid, and then BR before your maneuver so you don't have to it it. It also allows you to force collisions so you can't attack each other (good against swarms when you're outnumbered) and yet you still get your action even though you ran into someone. Speaking of which, it means that you can't be blocked (well, you can, but you still get your action, which is the main reason to block). Note that the B wing with AdvS is vulnerable to ion cannons since you don't reveal your dial in order to activate AdvS first. And with 1 agi, the ion attack is likely to connect.

You have almost everything needed to make my Fantastic Fours list. (Only thing you are missing is Adv. Sensors which comes with the shuttle.)

Red

Dagger+FCS (or Adv. Sensors)

Grey+Ion Turret

Roark+Ion Turret

This leaves you with 1 or 2 points for crew or astromechs.

You may "lack" the miniatures to make the "spam" lists (and you don't list Imperial availability) but a beautiful thing about Rebels is that you can make squads work with a wide variety of ships. To put is simply you could take any four ships you have and make a pretty reasonable squad with them.

Garven + Dutch is a pretty good combo with a variety of ways to utilize it. It also looks like you have all the pieces needed to make a HSF squad.

Thx for all the tips, really appreciate a fast response from the ffg x-wing community.... definately need to practise both the chewwie numb and XXBY-ion....
