Painted Ynfernal Hulk (Shadow of Nerekhall)

Very awesome! Fine work, sir!!

really like your work, except for base, I like base with nothing on it, just black.

But I would love to have your skills

Yeah, it took some time to decide how to do the basing. I think basing can make or break a well painted mini. It gives it more of a sense of being out in the environment. For the base outer edge, I have done the following:

- Tan = Minion

- Red = Master

- Purple = Lieutenant

- Black = Hero

You would really prefer a plain black base to that? I think that's nuts, man - that base itself is a work of art, and beautifully compliments the model.

Thanks amoshias, basing is one of the easiest things to do. I spend 2-3 hours painting some minis and never more than 30 minutes on the base, yet it can really add to the effects of the figure.

yes, I would. I hate base with stuff, because if you made for exemple a base with grass, it shocks me when playing in inside places, and because it's easier to see your mini with a plain black base that work like a shadow of the miniature, like in video games for example.

So, yes, nothing on the base for never, whatever I'm nuts or not, I don't care

I think that's fair, but minis are used in multipe quests and campaigns, so you will never be able to match the base to every environment. For me, and I think many others, I just can't spend a ton of time painting the figure and then leave the base blank. Plus, the base is the one thing you can really make unique. You will always find painting styles that will render a very similar figure, but the base can be completely unique. But, to each his own, right?

FWIW, I'm with you on this one. I prefer to pretend the base doesn't exist at all, and I find that easier to do when it's plain black, without decoration.

I also agree with the idea that a grassy base on indoor tiles looks jarring. A black base may not match any terrain, but it's consistently incorrect across all terrain and therefore easier to tone out.

Don't get me wrong, I have the utmost respect for the hobbyists who take the time to make such beautiful bases for their minis, and I've seen a bunch of really creative ideas come out of that. It's just not my personal cup of tea.

You said it better than I did !

The Ynfernal hulks are on my agenda next week, and I'll make sure I'll make their base a flow of lava with burnt rock edges. I don't care about the tile they sit on later when we play, it makes the model so much more alive and reflects the true nature of these beasts.

Thanks for sharing your work, OP, that's an amazing piece of work.

I personally find the best bases are the ones that specifically match the figures and don't try to assume an environment. (Things like lava / fire for elementals, etc.)

Couldn't agree more, Griton.
