Jax?

By Oxymandias, in X-Wing

Looking at my shiny new Aces, and thinking:

How does Carnor Jax really perform..?

Is he working out for you?

I'm guessing you need to be quite skilled with your Interceptor to succeed...

And...

What do you think of this list?

Jax

+ PTL

+ Stealth

Kir Kanos

+ Targeting Computer

Omicron

+ Advanced Sensors

+ Ion Canon

Black Squadron Tie

+ DTF

Jax and Black try to get up behind and close, Black there to keep Jax alive.

Omi and Kanos from up front, ionising and hurting.

What mates do you suggest for Jax?

Targeting computer on Kir is kind of a waste, you'll want to evade with Kir to use his ability, so you won't be able to TL.

Yup ditch the targeting computer. Put an upgrade on the shuttle that makes it a higher priority target or move things around to make room for a bounty hunter.

In my experience, Jax is excellent as a swarm counter, but you needa swarm or a ship that hits hard and often to add to the benefit. Tuck him in behind a formation so they can't focus or evade, and roll a LOT of attacks against which they can't modify dice.

Couple of points:

1 - TC - its been coverd

2 - An Interceptor is a pretty good flanker if it has PtL, but the Black Squadron ship will not be able to catch up.

3- Flanker IMO opinion are distractions, forcing the other player to decide what they want to do about it. But here you are just splitting your force. Giving you opponent the opportunity to attack your force piecemeal.

4- I don't really like Jax as a distractor I want him the center of my force. I want every ship that is engaging my main force to have to deal with Jax's nasty ability.

5- Jax has to be close for his ability to be useful, so the Stealth device might help him a little for a turn or two, but at close range he is going to get hit pretty quick. You might get a better value out of a shield upgrade. However

6- With PtL and Stealth Jax is a very tempting target. I would leave both off. At 26 points he is still very good, but if you opponent decides it is his turn to die (which is pretty likely, pretty soon) he won't give them as many points. You also have more points to make your other ships dangerous.

7- Some people love the Ion Cannon and it is okay against a foe who is in love with PtL, But I without the added benefit of the 360 degree firing arc I usually just prefer to just shoot things with my considerable 3 attack dice.

8- The Advanced Sensors on the shuttle help it maneuverability, adding Engine Upgrades finishes the job. I would also add a gunner if you have the points. This makes your shuttle more deadly and it will draw more hate. It will draw hate away from you TIE Interceptors.

Targeting computer on Kir is kind of a waste, you'll want to evade with Kir to use his ability, so you won't be able to TL.

Duh! My bad!

Of course, you're right!

Thanks for the input! Will give it another try... :P

I actually disagree with the thoughts on Kir and TC.

I think it is the upgrade for him.

You can get a lock and use it next turn in conjunction with his evade ability. Otherwise 3 unmodified dice+1 hit is not all that impressive. So he would be your flanker.

I need to test it more, but I think it might be the best way to use him.

Kanos is the odd one out among imperial aces. His placesis bringing up the rear of a TIE swarm. The evade + a Howlrunner reroll is a dangerous combination, even better with a squad leadered focus.
