Looking for some critiques on an Imperial list I'm working on

By darthjeff81, in X-Wing

Here's the list:

Omicron group pilot (21)

Darth Vader (3)

Major Rhymer (26)

Advanced Proton Torpedoes (6) x2

Push the Limit (3)

Howlrunner (18)

Mauler Mithel (17)

100pts

The idea behind this squad is to get two powerful attacks out of Rhymer in the first two shooting rounds, with the shuttle and TIEs to clean up. Having three high priority targets means the opponent will have to choose who to shoot.

At PS7 Rhymer should be shooting first, and only have to survive one round of focused fire to get both torps off, which should be possible with 2agi and 6HP. The PTL gives him focus+TL on the APTs, and should deal some massive damage.

The shuttle is there to finish of any survivors of the APTs and run interference. with Rhymer the main focus the first one or two turns, the shuttle can do some decent damage before taking fire.

Howlrunner and Mauler will come in from the flank and take over as main damage dealers after Rhymer's torps

Two APTs should take out any one large ship or two small ships with a hit or two from the shuttle. After that Howlrunner, Mauler and the shuttle should be able to take out one ship each turn with focused fire, re-rolls and Vader.

Any suggestions would be welcome.

Getting off 2 APTs will be tricky - once you get off 1 of them at range 1-2, your next move will almost certainly need to be a k-turn - if I saw 2 apts I'm not going to move slow and let them both get fired. When you k- turn you'll be stressed to no APL that round, and if your opponent focuses fire on rhymer he'll probably be toast.

Not a deal breaker for the list, if you keep this in mind and fly carefully this list could do pretty well.

I actually like this more than I'd have guessed. Only thing I'm not wild about is Howelrunner. I'd drop her down to Backstabber and then you have 2 points to use on Mithel perhaps for an EPT.

That second APT will be an issue to get launched. Swap one APT for a proton bomb. Fly in, whack one target hard, next turn drop a doosie, fly outta there.

The rest of your squad looks good.

Howl is kinda unnecessary. I'd suggest going with Backstabber in her place. Also, you want to have the shuttle + TIE/ln be the main force with Rhymer flanking since he needs to not K turn to get that second APT off. Plus, he'll draw less heat that way. Or they'll turn to face him, and then your shuttle gets a few more useful shots in.

Howl is kinda unnecessary. I'd suggest going with Backstabber in her place.

Good suggestion ;)

I would certainly drop howlrunner... she doesn't add anything. Also, how are you going to keep your shuttle back without bumpers?

Omicron group pilot (21)

Darth Vader (3)

Major Rhymer (26)

Advanced Proton Torpedoes (6) x2

Push the Limit (3)

Howlrunner (18)

Mauler Mithel (17)

I agree with others about the two major flaws here: Rhymer will struggle to fire both APTs, Howlrunner is really superfluous, and the Omicron may struggle after the first pass (assuming it lives long enough to get a second pass).

So I'd substitute a Homing Missile for one of the APTs, and drop Push the Limit--the idea is that Rhymer can get a lock early, keep it after the Homing attack, and then use it with focus on the following round to fire the APT. I'd also drop Howlrunner to Night Beast. That frees up 7 points, which is enough to add Engine Upgrade + Advanced Sensors to your shuttle, making it a dogfighter instead of (just) a Doom Shuttle. If you don't like Vader on a shuttle with upgrades, an Ion Cannon can help provide some control--helpful for making sure Rhymer can control his approach.

(I threw the resulting list into a squad builder; link here.)

Omicron Group Pilot (21)
Advanced Sensors (3)
Darth Vader (3)
Engine Upgrade (4)
Major Rhymer (26)
Advanced Proton Torpedoes (6)
Homing Missiles (5)
"Mauler Mithel" (17)
"Night Beast" (15)
Omicron Group Pilot (21)

Advanced Sensors (3)

Gunner (5)

Engine Upgrade (4)

Major Rhymer (26)

Proton Torpedoes (4)

Proton Torpedoes (4)

Push the Limit (3)

"Backstabber" (16)

Black Squadron Pilot (14)

This gives you two attacks that can be fired with a Focus at ranges 1 - 3 and a shuttle with teeth so it can't be ignored. Backstabber is awesome and wholly under-rated.

After a few rounds, your shuttle will be ignored and out of the fight. Vader is a good way of fixing this, via suicide shuttle. That being said, you're going to need more offensive punch for the later rounds. And I agree with the group, Howlrunner in this build isn't helping you much.

Omnicron+Vader

Soontir Fel+PtL+TC

Howlrunner+Swarm Tactics

Academy x2

Here is a list that allows the shuttle to lay it on heavy in the opening rounds (use Vader every time you can) and then Howl and mini swarm is there for support and the middle game. Soontir is your end game. If your opponent does try to go after Soontir early, run them around the board and chew them up with your ties and shuttle. If they ignore Soontir, have the interceptor hit them hard from a safe location.

Thanks for all the feedback. It is really helpful to get different opinions on my build, and have several people discuss the strategy.

The biggest problems I heard were getting two torpedoes off with Rhymer and howlrunner being unnecessary.

I figure the best way to solve the first problem is trading Rhymer with two APTs for two Gammas with protons. That way I can get both torps off the first shooting turn, and PS4 is still higher than most ships, and with 100pts, I move second, allowing me to get a TL. Proton torps are nice ordinance for TL-only shots, and still hit hard. I also have two ships left after the alpha strike instead of one.

I liked the idea of having Fel as my late game ship, and his modified dice hit more reliably than two unmodified TIEs. So, I swapped out Howlrunner and mauler for Fel+PTL+TC
