Waiting for the Bus to Innsmouth

By spr5858, in Arkham Horror Second Edition

Hi All

Having been a fan of Lovecraft and the RPG Call of Cthulhu for the last 30 years. I was very excited to see the Return of the old Chasioum game Arkham Horror. But must admit it took awhile for me to purchase the game. I was a tad sceptical on if a board game could capture the feel of the Mythos and Works of HPL.

But last year I bought it and invited a couple of friends over to have a go. And was surprised and pleased by the Results. And followed it up by buying Dunwich, Kingsport, Dark Pharaoh, King in Yellow and Black Goat. I have not played any of these expansions yet but intend to ASAP.

And now I see Innsmouth is in the works to. This is my Favorite HPL Location and my favorit mythos story so I cannot wait to purchase a copy.

I have a few questions

When will we see Innsmouth on the shelves (I live in the UK)

Does anyone play A.H game Solo (I think it could work well)

What next for the game (Will there be anymore expansions for the game)

Will F.F.G produce Figures for this product like they have done for Descent?? (I would love that I do own all the RAFM CoC Minis)

Cheers All

Steve

Most certainly. To be honest, I've only played one game with other people. I play solo all the time, but I always play 3 or 4 investigators. Solo with one isn't much fun.

The game should be out in May. As for going solo, it depends on how much you like to juggle. I personally hate having to keep track of every single thing and keeping with one play style. If I can pass something off to someone else I find it much more fun (especially when they try to pronounce words like R'hley) and having people with their own strategies adds more theme to the game (like having someone refuse to remove a curse from someone b/c they were due for a 1)

Investigator and monster figures are unlikely and impractical, because the monsters have to be drawn at random, and everyone would rather have high-quality investigator pictures than possibly cheesy or even unpainted investigator minis.

This has been brought up a number of times, and each time it was shot down by the fans, so that tells you something.

Innsmouth...your guess is as good as ours, in ANY part of the world. When the Great Old Ones allow it...it will just...BE.

I play solo all the time! Arkham Horror is such a brilliantly autonomous game, you will swear it's watching you and reacting to your carefully-planned moves like a razor-edged flyswatter. I always play with at least 3 Investigators; I don't find the deathcrunch of one lone Investigator all that fun. But some others do. Try it, see what you think.

It's all speculation, but many of us think that, even if Innsmouth is the last of the Big Board Expansions (it may not be!), there are still dozens of potential Card Expansions to come, since those seem to be themed at one specific Ancient One (Nyarlathotep, Hastur, Shub). I'm still eager to see a Yig Expansion.

There's no telling, but I wouldn't hold my breath. Not after all the product that has already been released without them. I just don't think it's part of the AH style, just as it is completely part of the Descent style. But hey, look at the artwork. You'd rather have a little dinky Joe or Mandy figure instead of those beautiful portraits? Okay, if that doesn't work...um...think about the money you're saving? gui%C3%B1o.gif

yes playing all those investigators solo is a pain... upkeep: arg!

Hello spr5858.

I'm in the UK too, and unfortunately the availability of the expansions tends to be very variable - if you've got a Friendly Local Game Store (even Forbidden Planet tend to get some of this stuff) you should probably ring them up and insist on reserving any copy that comes. The problem isn't usually that the release date slides, it's that there are so few copies to go around, and they seem to get snapped up pretty fast. From what I hear, though, the situation in America isn't much better.

There seems to be a rumour going round (for a while now, actually) that Innsmouth will be the last 'board' expansion. I'm not sure where this rumour came from, except that it might just be made up because it seems like it would have a certain 'symmetry' to it. When Innsmouth comes out, almost all the possible Elder Gods from Lovecraft's own work will have been used as Ancient Ones, and most of the iconic creatures from almost all his stories have been used somewhere or other. Plus, after Arkham, Dunwich, Kingsport and Innsmouth, there aren't many place names left.

Then again, there are dozens of core ideas for card-based expansions that could still be done. 'At The Mountains of Madness' has potential, and there's a lot of Dreamlands-cycle mythology that barely gets a look-in. There's easily enough stuff in the Dreamlands stories to cover a whole 'Dreamlands' board in locations, although it would override a few of the Other Worlds that are already in the game.
