Another option would be a random draw of pilots and upgrades. Then make what you can of your list. We've only done this once but the points were surprisingly even. The upgrades however were not an optimal pick of what I would have liked, LOL. Still fun though. We would do this more if it was not such a hassle to organize your cards after the bit mix up.
A couple of the online squad builders have a button to randomly generate a squad for you. You could play with the same concept without having to shuffle up all your cards.

Yup this is also fun to do. Sometimes you get screwed and sometimes its pretty good.
You could also abuse my personal favorite rules quirk: Swarm Tactics does not include the word "may," and is therefore a mandatory effect. Throw it on a Black Squadron Pilot and hope he strays a little too close to someone else.
