Han Solo's ability and Marksman.

By Scizzler, in X-Wing Rules Questions

My question is on Han's ability and marksmanship, like the title. In the rules it says you cannot reroll any modified dice.

Han's ability reads: "When attacking, you may reroll all of your dice. If you choose to do so, you must reroll as many as possible."

Marksmanship reads: When attacking this round, you may change one focus to a critical and all other focuses to hits.

So if you rolled 2 eyes and a blank, could you use marksman to modify the focuses to a hit and a crit and Han's ability to reroll the blank instead of all your dice to optimize your potential offensive capability?

Thanks in advance!

Dice can be rerolled only once. Changing an eyeball to a hit or crit isn't a reroll, so they'd all still need to be rerolled.

Page 12 of the rules states dice that are modified or rerolled may not be rerolled.

I stand corrected, it says

"When a die is changed
or rerolled, ignore its original result
and apply only the new result. This
new result may be modified by other
effects; however, a die that has
already been rerolled
cannot be
rerolled again

during this attack"

So you can reroll marksman modified dice. Oh well :(

My question is on Han's ability and marksmanship, like the title. In the rules it says you cannot reroll any modified dice.

I was going to get all snarky and say "The rules say no such thing!" and then go into an explanation, but you sussed it out for yourself by actually reading the rule in question and parsing the wording to find the correct answer. That does not happen very often with (relative) newcomers to the forum, so I just wanted to give you kudos for a job well done!

The attack sequence is:

1.

Declare Target: The attacker chooses which

enemy ship he wishes to attack.

2.

Roll Attack Dice: The attacker rolls a number

of attack dice equal to his ship’s primary weapon

value (red number), unless using a secondary

weapon (see “Secondary Weapons” on page 19).

3.

Modify Attack Dice: Players can spend

action tokens and resolve abilities that.. yada yada yada

Since the modify step comes after the reroll step, how can you reroll the dice changed by Marksmanship?

Or am I missing someting?

Because, like I said before, a die can not be rerolled more than once. Other modifications don't matter though, so you could focus a die, than reroll it. Or marksman, and reroll, or HLC crits to hits, than reroll. The relevant passage in the rules was even quoted a few posts up, but I'll put it here again:

"When a die is changed
or rerolled, ignore its original result
and apply only the new result. This
new result may be modified by other
effects; however, a die that has
already been rerolled
cannot be
rerolled again

during this attack"

Modified =/= rerolled

Modified dice aren't "re-rolled" dice. It is entirely possible to modify a single die multiple times. An example:

1. You make an attack with an Advanced Proton Torpedo.

2. You can turn/modify a number of [blank] dice so they are now [eye] dice.

3. If you have/use something that convert [eye] dice, like a spending a focus token or having Marksmanship active, you can now turn the they [eye] dice to something better like a [hit] or maybe even a [crit].

4. I'm not sure if there are effects that will work in this example but you could even have something that will turn a [hit] into a [crit].

Through all of these (hypothetical) steps you turned an attack die three times going from a [blank] all the way up to a [crit] yet you have never "re-rolled" the die.

Etan Ahbat (E-Wing) would then turn a hit to a crit as well. So yeah, modify =/= reroll

1.Declare Target:

2.Roll Attack Dice:

3.Modify Attack Dice:

Since everyone else seems to have misunderstood your question

There is no "reroll" step. Step 2 is the initial attack roll, you do not reroll the dice, with a target lock or whatever, in that step. It is in step 3 that you may both modify dice and reroll dice. Those are 2 different things but they do happen in the same step so you may choose which to do first, modify or reroll. In almost all circumstances you will want to choose to reroll first and then modify.

Ahh, yeah, we did mis-read what he was asking. Troy nailed it though.
