Would anyone consider buying these?

By Eggs, in X-Wing

Just wondering about the viability of casting my asteroids up and selling them. They are 3d representations of the tokens with token-accurate bases. If it's something you would consider, what do you think would be a fair price for both unassembled and fully assembled, painted and varnished?

Would you consider a kickstarter that included a set of asteroids and a gaming mat? The mat would have a choice of images, and NO LOGO! Again, what do you think would be a fair price for that?

While I enjoy 3D asteroids, they are often more trouble than they're worth. It's a pain in the butt if you land right on them, or if you have to fly through them and the central pipe gets in the way, etc. You do good work, but I wouldn't personally buy 3D asteroids.

Maybe if they were detachable at the bottom of the base.

First let me explain:

I'm a storyteller more than a gamer. Games will just help tell the story. So I will play X-Wing, but I'll also play Edge of the Empire with models and boards/mats. With that in mind most of my blog/forum posts will feature photographs, possibly edited to appear like pages from a comic book/graphic novel. With that in mind I was already planning to get Gale Force 9 asteroids, as well as whatever space gaming mats I could find.

Now to business:

Their asteroids = £30

Their 36" X 36" mats = £30

Your asteroids have an advantage over their's because all have stands, and all stands are made like X-Wing tokens.

If you made double-sided gaming mats, where one side is just stars and the other side has a planet or nebula on, then I'd be tempted. Perhaps have about six mats, which could easily stand side-by-side for bigger, more Epic games, then that would be good as I may want to run a 1000 point game when ambition strikes. Planets need not be specific, just one of each of the following:

Ice World

Desert World

Temperate World (Earth-like with land, oceans and cloud)

Gas Giant

Ringed Gas Giant

Water World

Perhaps two kits. One has six star/planet mats and the other has six star/nebula mats. With the nebula the problem becomes making them look good if joined together, bordering on the stars or alone among stars. Perhaps have a design and then allow backers to pick from a choice of colours.

Asteroids: £30 (seems fair to me and make them add ons. Focus on the mats.)

Individual double sided mat: £20

Individual double sided mat + Asteroids: £40

Pack of all six double sided: £100

Pack of all six double sided + Asteroids: £120

Both packs of double sided: £200

The full monty: both packs of double sided and asteroids: £220

Design your own double sided mat, in addition to the full monty: £300

Make the Kickstarter a few months from now, at least 30 days long, and I might be able to afford the £120 (planet) option.

Hope I've helped

Nice job on the asteroids, you sculpted them to match the card ones very well, though I prefer the more pocked surface you get from lava rocks. I'd sculpt on lots of micro craters on their surfaces before casting them. Nice job on the lasercut bases too.

Surprised so many people don't get that you put down the card asteroids as normal and then put these on top. Easy to move out of the way when a ship is overlapping then replace the asteroid after the ship is clear.

Do you have pics of the whole mats?

And then you noticed the Astroids are double sided and you place the cardboard token wrong side up to match the 3D ones :P

Actually, I prefer a more cratered look to asteroids too.

No thanks, if I want 3D asteroids for my X-wing games (or any space combat game, like Full Thrust, etc...) I will just take some readily available (and cheap) lava rock, spray paint it various shades of grey (if necessary) and use those. I may mount them on stands, I may not. They can also be made cheaply and easily from foam (which will wear less on the model paint jobs is they come in contact). Cast asteroids just seems to be a waste of money, IMO. That said, they look really nice!

Chris

If you had a bundle deal for around $40, i would consider...

Also the peg would have to be removable from the bottom.

Food for thought. Thanks folks!

I'm glad you said they were asteroids, for a moment there I thought they were UV correl skippers

But seriously, good work!

I've heard a few folk mention they don't like the thought of keeping moving them, but I have to be honest, so far, on average, I've had to move about one, every two games or so. It's not like folk are constantly banging into them, and when they dom they generally just clip it, so no moving required. I find it's quite rare for someone to actually park on top of one.

Ideally the stalk would need to be made of a material that would allow ships to pass right through while still supporting the asteroid at a suitable height so ships can pass under them.

Eureka!

I've got it!

Magnets! Have a strong enough magnet for the base, and then have another one in the asteroid. Make sure that it's two positives, or negatives, since that would make the asteroid "float" as opposed to sticking to the base.

Now where's my award for best 3D asteroid for X-Wing idea?

While this may not be what you want to hear, anyone paying for asteroids is being daft. Go outside, find rocks, place on table. No flight stand, just literally slap them down on the mat. Voila, free asteroids. I went and picked up a bag of the things, got about 20 now. Didn't cost a penny.

The way I use the 3D astroids is I still place the token on the board and then place the astroids on top of the token. When a ship moves into/over it, pick up the 3D astroids and set it aside. When the ship moves away/off, place the 3D astroid back into its original postion, sans any arguments since the token was still marking its original location.

Easy.

That way you still get the cool look of the 3D while still getting the accuracy of the token.

BTW Eggs, Your astroids look similar to the ones I made for myself. Great job!

Thats cool. But honestly I would rather go out and buy my own lava rocks and make my own asteroids...I could get some from a store for $15 and still have some left over to cook my steak...

Awesome! You did a great job in making these. A friend made some like this and visually they are much better than the cardboard tokens. Place these on top of the cardboard and pick them up when a ship overlaps.

I'd be interested if they were inexpensive.
