Hey, do you guys think there will ever be a quest compendium book for 2nd edition? Thanks!
Quest Compendium 2.0
As quests depend on precise expansions, which are necessary to play the said quests, a compendium would not - at the present state of affairs - not make a lot of sense.
I see, very valid point. I missed the first edition compendium as I only own the base game for it, and I got it too late. I wasn't real sure if it would work as I have personally never read the first one. I guess the new quest vault replaces it anyway. Thanks!
And if ever it will be, it would be in years, since the book will not come before all expansions came out, and it looks like there will be a ton of it, maybe around 3 years with 2 smalls and 1 big expansion a year.
So, maybe in 2018 ?

This product was possibly one of the worst products ever released in the Descent 1E line. While it had some good and/or interesting ideas behind it, it had a number of issues. Many of the quests weren't properly edited / playtested, so you had to house-rule a bunch of stuff that wasn't clear or was just broken. Each quest also required a number of different expansions, so unless you had all of the expansions, you couldn't run half the quests in the book.
My guess is that FFG knows how poorly this thing did and how badly it was received overall. Combine that with knowing that their players also realized it was a flop, they are probably really reluctant to sink their time into another one.
Honestly, instead of a Quest Compendium with a bunch of random one-off quests, I think we're more likely to see stand-alone campaigns that require only one or two expansions released as a PoD (Print on Demand) product. Though this is unlikely to happen until they at least get all of their other PoD stuff for Descent lined up and working well. And even then, with the replayability/randomness of the CoOp stuff they're doing, that may fill this niche well enough that they don't bother.
After my disappointment with Shadows, I think a quest compendium - if I heard reports that it was, in fact, well edited and well playtested - would be one of the few things I could say I'd definitely buy at this point.
Unfortunately, "well edited and playtested" is kinda the opposite of FFG's design philosophy.
Edited by amoshiasI think it would be a nice touch to have a few quests for the expansions I already have, instead a paying big for an expansion, especially in rural Australia, where the only place I can buy board game content charges a mint.
If FFG get a good plan instead of throwing expansions for the sake of expansions, I would feel my money is well spent.
A quest compendium with single quests would not make much sense for 2E. I agree with Griton on the PoD possibility. But if FFG were to make a book, what would make more sense would be a Campaign Compendium, with a variety of short and long campaigns. And since such a book would not be tied to any specific expansion, we might even be able to see a few official quests using materials from more than one expansion, in such a book.
I would definitely purchase such a book.
If this book will ever have a chance to appear, It may only be because of the quest vault.
So, the more good quest there's on it, the better chance we will have to see a such book came one day
There are two things to note about the Quest Compendium for D1E:
1) it's a collection of one-off quests that don't combine together at all.
2) each quest was written by a celebrity guest, well known in the RPG/gaming community, but not necessarily familiar with all the intricacies of Descent.
The end result were a bunch of really cool ideas that suffered from implementation issues given how finnicky the balance in Descent can sometimes be. On top of that, there were printing issues and errata (nearly 14 pages thereof, IIRC) which contributed to it not going over so well with fans.
Given how campaign-centric D2E is, I really don't think a Quest Compendium in that vein would go over well, even if it was printed correctly.
I would agree that a stand-alone campaign book could be done. Co-op or regular "versus mode" alike. Allow each such book to draw on content from one or two expansions in addition to the base game and clearly spell out which ones are needed on the cover, and it would probably be really cool. However, given how badly the first one went over, publically, I'm not sure how keen FFG is on the idea of trying again anyway.
I would buy campaign books for Descent (assuming they weren't as issue-plagued as the D1E Quest Compendium) as often as FFG was willing to print them.
