What specializations and species do you want to see?

By Kirdan Kenobi, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

So as to not derail the other, similar, threads going on, I thought I'd pose my question on new one.

Though people have differing opinions as to the order in which the career supplements aught to come out, there have also been opinions going around (mostly in the colonist thread) about what species aught to be in what book, and what specializations you would like to see. Feel free to list specific equipment/starships too. I'd like to see what people have to say about that. I'll start:

Bounty Hunter
Dogfighter: basically another copy of the Pilot tree.

Sniper: the AoR Sharpshooter
???
Races: Mandalorians, Ubese, Yuzzum
Gear: Jet Pack Missile

About the "Dogfighter": what do you mean another copy? Just another Pilot tree, or a variant thereof?

I'd think that Sharpshooter will appear in some future EotE career splatbook, the bounty hunter one for instance - as it was not in DC.

Mandalorian is not a distinct species, and while the Corellian Human variant does open this flood gate of distinct human variants, I'd say it's likely it'll have an additional potential 3rd rank in some bounty hunter or hired gun central skill, for instance ranged (heavy) or ranged (light) - or resilience.

I'd like to see the Ubese too.

Jet Pack Missile? Isn't that just a medium to long range grenade launcher, with Guided 1 or 2, attached to a jetpack?

As for what I want to see:

I second the Ubese species, but I'd also like to see another human variant, the Kiffar, not that it's needed, their culture, tatoos and whatnot is roleplaying material, and their force ability ... well, plot device.

I'd like to see some starship construction rules.

If we get a starship-based Specialization for Bounty Hunter, I'd like to see it more focused on locating and following other starships while trying to remain unnoticed by them. Stuff for tailing (and possibly evading) other ships, extending sensor range, something that allows Astrogation to plot where another ship just jumped to, and maybe something that allows for starship weapons like laser cannons to disable target vessels without blowing them up (possibly by allowing them to do SS rather than WT on a hit by spending several Advantages or a Triumph). I certainly wouldn't mind if they had a talent that allowed any Tractor Beam operated to have +1 Tractor rating (because Light Tractor Beams are pretty sucky right now).

For new species, I'd love to see the Ubese as well, but wouldn't object to seeing the Ryn, Miraluka (probably won't happen until Force and Destiny, though), and the Anzati.

Yes, I purposely chose the oddest of my "wish list" to post.

I also would love to see some starship construction rules, costs for starship "parts" (like the cost of a replacement hyperdrive outside of Obligation and/or a job reward), and some versatile modifications.

Equipment-wise, I'd really love to see some "general" equipment and "trade materials." Things like gems and luxury items for the latter, and objects like footlockers for the former.

The Pilot specialization makes a second appearance in Age of Rebellion as one of the specializations for the Ace career. Dogfighting is also something that more properly belongs in Age of Rebellion versus Edge of the Empire... although since the rules are 100% cross-compatible so far, splatbooks for AoR will also be of a great resource to Edge players.

As for Sniper, that's already covered by the Assassin specialization in the Bounty Hunter line. While some elements of the Assassin are for up close, one side of the tree is clearly geared for snipers.

Eventually I would like to see Kel Dor, Nautolan, and Muun... but these might be more ones that we see in F&D. They still may get some sort of treatment in a splatbook, Muun especially in terms of Edge of the Empire.

I couldn't even hazard a guess as to what additional specializations may come with each career. I suspect that even once the splatbooks are complete for all three lines, we'll see even more specialization trees come out... but that'd be a long way off.

Muun are fairly isolationist and hate to travel. Sure, the Muun do a lot of work for the IGBC, but in the era of the Empire, humans do most of the front face work of that organization and the Muuns stay behind the scenes. While it's certainly possible to play the Muun that's an exception to the rule, I'd put my money on species that are more commonly seen traveling about the Galaxy.

I'd like to see Mirailan and Kel Dor.

Species, I guess a mix would be interesting:

Arkanian

Gamorrean

Verpine

Sluissi

For EotE I'd like to see Ubese as well. They fit the fringe setting in my opinion. I could also see Bith, Nikto, Houk, Quarren fitting in nicely.

I'm iffy about Mandalorians, don't get me wrong I love 'em, but I'm not sure they need even a Human subspecies for Mandalorians. Maybe make it a specialization? The interesting thing about this time period is that the Empire mined significant amounts of Mandalorian Iron (depending on if that part of the EU is retained or not) so getting a full suit of beskar quality Mandalorian armor should probably be as difficult as getting a hold of a lightsaber. Possible, but not easy by a long shot.

For AoR I think a Alderaanian refugee might be a cool human variant. Dressllian is another good options.

Nautolan and Kel Dor are my two most wanted species. I could maybe see a Cyberneticist in the Technician book, especially since BtR added in the optional Cybernetics skill. I don't really have any other guesses for specs, though.

I would like to see Quarren, Ugnaughts, and Togruta. Kel Dor will probably be in F&D along with Cereans.

I go back and forth about Hutts as a playable species.

Great Ideas Happy!

I'm well aware that Mandalorians are not a distinct species, least-wise they haven't been for thousands of years, and rather are a culture, made up mostly of humans. A Mandolorian "species" certainly isn't necessary, and, because humans are already so good, would probably end up being inferior to them (unless it provided for a third rank in ranged (heavy). I mostly mentioned it because, if we have Corellians, it would be nice to have Mandalorians, and the Bounty Hunter book seems the most appropriate place to put them.

By Jet pack missile, I was thinking along the lines of an encumbrance one, guided 2, missile with similar stats to the missile launcher that can be attached to a jet pack. It'd be expensive per shot, but if you REALLY needed to destroy that speeder...

I would like to see Quarren, Ugnaughts, and Togruta. Kel Dor will probably be in F&D along with Cereans.

All those would be great species. Except for Hutts. Hutts are just simply better suited as NPCs.

I'd love to see some sort of gunfighter specialization, emphazising quick draw skills in an Old West sort of way. It would be a toss-up whether it was based on the Bounty Hunter or Smuggler career. I also really like HappyDaze's suggestion of a more subterfuge-based piloting specialization, that sort of thing would add extra flavour to space encounters. An investigator/detective type of specialization would also be cool; I imagine if you put it on the Smuggler career it would be something like a hardboiled private detective, while if you stuck it with the Colonist it would be more like a classical British detective a la Sherlock Holmes or Hercule Poirot.

As for species, I'd love to see Bith (unless they're covered in the AoR core book?), Chadra-Fan, Advoszec, Arcona, Herglics, Brubb and Houk. Just to name a few off the top of my head.

Jawa's and Gamoreans...

Spy, miner, gambler

It wouldn't be an EU fringe experience without Squibs.

I agree with the call for Ubese as well.

I'd like to see Arkanians, Arcona, Quarrens, Herglics, Deveronians, Gotals and Verpines for the EotE setting.

I'd like to see the Jawa species in the Hutt Space sourcebook. The will be Hutt space source book, on the way, right?

Oh and I forgot, I'd like to see a colonist specialization for musician or entertainer. I've got a concept for a Bith musician who is also a spice mule.

After reading the KotOR comic, I wouldn't mind seeing Snivvians.

Any, as long as their girls are pretty.

Wait, you mean in-game?

Any, as long as their girls are pretty.

Zabraks, Togruta, and Zygerrians.

Gotta go with Smuggler for the next splat, my Marauder character decided to be a Scoundrel instead....

What specializations would you like to see in a smuggler book?

I want to see Jawa as a species and Gambler as a specialization.

Zabraks, Togruta, and Zygerrians.

What specializations would you like to see in a smuggler book?

There are a number of threads on this but my ideas for Smuggler are...

Gambler-Cool, Skulduggery, Deception, Charm

Gunslinger-Range(L), Cool, Vigilance, Perception

Forger-Computers, Deception, Skulduggery, Knowledge (Inner Rim)

Daredevil-Pilot(Planetary), Charm, Negotiation, Mechanics

First Mate-Astrogation, Computers, Gunnery, Mechanics

Pugilist-Athletics, Brawl, Cool, Coordination

Zabraks, Togruta, and Zygerrians.

I just don't see a need for a First Mate specialty. It looks like a fine example of a character that splits XP between Mechanic and Pilot to me. Daredevil, as you describe it, simply looks like a mix of Driver and Scoundrel. I think it's intentional that some concepts are handled with a mixing of specializations rather than making a separate specialization for everything.
