Another question about Vertran Instinct and Swarm Tactics

By Ghost Vader, in X-Wing Rules Questions

If I was running a squad with vader and three saber pilots, gave vader and 2 other saber pilots swarm tactics, could I put veteran instincts on the last pilot to up his ps to 11, or is the highest possible ps 9? After thinking about it Im guessing ps 9 just wanted to make sure I wasn't making a mistake

Saber + Veteran (9/11???)

Veteran Instincts only adds to the base Pilot Skill value, when you equip it at the start of the game.

If later, that pilot recieves an effect that modifies its PS value, the new value replaces or 'overwrites' the current one.

So, for example, if your Saber with Veteran Instincts (6) recieves swarm tactics from Vader (9) the new value replaces the old one (albeit temporarily) and your Saber will have PS 9 up to the end of the combat phase. After the combat phase, its PS return to the previous value of 6.

Another example: If your Saber with veteran instincts recieves a "Damaged cockpit" card, its PS of 6 is replaced by PS 0 for the rest of the game. However, if Vader comes to the rescue and uses Swarm Tactics on him, its PS value is modified again to 9 for the rest of the combat phase. When the combat phase ends, it returns to its previous value of 0.

Q: How does Veteran Instincts work with
other abilities that set a ship’s pilot skill
value to a new number?
A: Veteran Instincts increases a ship’s printed pilot
skill value; it does not increase further alterations
to that ship’s pilot skill value. For example, while
Black Squadron Pilot is equipped with Veteran
Instincts, his pilot skill value is “6.” If Darth Vader
(pilot skill value “9”) uses Swarm Tactics on that
Black Squadron Pilot, that Black Squadron Pilot now
has a pilot skill value of “9,” not “11.”

Thanks that cleared it up appreciate it!

I have a doubt reading this post, If Veteran Instinct work on the original PS, the Swarm Tactics follow the same logic, so the chain reaction described in the first post is not correct. If I understand well Vader pass his PS (9) to the first Saber Pilot, but this Saber Pilot can not pass PS 9 received but pass his original PS 4.

is it correct?

No. Swarm Tactics changes whatever PS value it finds when its used upon a ship.

The sequence is: Vader passes his PS 9 to the first saber pilot. Now, Saber's PS is 9 for all purposes, including using its own Swarm Tactics card to pass his new PS 9 to another buddy.

Veteran Instincts is the first modification to PS that your ship can suffer, since it's applied in the 'building squad' process, right when you equip the upgrade. Any other modifications will occur later, and each one will overwrite the previous one, either permanently (like damaged cockpit) or temporarily (like Swarm Tactics or Roark Garnet).

Each time one effect changes your PS value, the new value supersedes or 'overwrites' the old one. If it is a temporal effect, the PS value will revert to its immediate previous state when the effect expires. If it is permanent, the new value will hold in place until another effect modifies it again.

Q: Can multiple ships that have Swarm Tactics
equipped use the upgrade in sequence to
give each of those ships the original ship’s
pilot skill value?
A: Yes. For example, the Rebel player has equipped
both Wedge Antilles and Luke Skywalker with
Swarm Tactics. He uses Wedge’s Swarm Tactics to
treat Luke’s pilot skill as a 9, then use Luke’s Swarm
Tactics to treat Rookie Pilot’s pilot skill as a 9.

Jehan really said it clear, so I don't know how you are still confused. Perhaps it is because you are trying to apply the same logic to two different cards that don't apply the same logic?

Swarm Tactics passes the current PS of a pilot to another pilot. Veteran Instinct only affects the PS of the pilot as printed on the pilot's card.

So Vader passes his PS 9 to the 1st Saber pilot. That Saber pilot is now currently PS 9 and passes that to the 2nd Saber. The 2nd Saber is now currently PS 9 and passes that to the 3rd Saber, who happened to be PS 6 (due to Veteran Instinct).

Thank you to all

People have answered the other part of your question, but note also that 9 is not the upper limit for PS. If you give Vader veteran instincts his

PS is 11, and Roark Garnett can temporarily bump another pilot's PS to 12.
