ya know what ? this game is evil ( LOL !)

By t7thunders, in X-Wing

3 weeks ago I was all set. The paint was ready, brushes are primed and all I had to do was finish

1 rhino

1 storm raven

And 12 little space marines. That was it. Finally a two year Crimson fist project would be at its end.

Then out of the blue (no pun intended) I just had to click on a banner add on tabletop gaming news.

300.00 later and I still feel that I dont have enough ships.

I'm having more fun than I ever did with 40k. Oh and those Marines still are not done.

This game is a total time suck. I love it. This happen to any one else ?

Well it is great that we don't have to assemble and paint the ships, but I find it is always nice to have at least one painting or modelling project "in the works" however this has begun to be more "Star Wars themed" and compatible with the game.

Welcome to the addiction...

I feel very much the same!

I've been building, painting and playing 40k for about 15 years now (I have a massive IG army) and was happy to carry on.

Then I bought the X-Wing starter box a few weeks ago, and everything changed!

I don't think I'll give up 40k completely (and I'm still quite eager to see the new IG codex), but my gaming focus has definitely shifted! As a massive Star Wars fan, I think this currently the best miniature game on the market for me!

40K

Unassembled, unpainted and expensive miniature kits. Can't afford it anymore, found I was getting irritated with the ever changing rules, codex and models so quit.

X-Wing

Assembled and painted models. Easy to learn rules. Having done the maths, I can put together a sizable fleet for a fraction of the price of 40K. Time saving and money saving won and now I can't wait to get started properly. Even getting into the Edge of Empire RPG for some added Star Wars fun.

I have played 40k for something like 10 years got out of it tried to get back into it last year and found it was too much time, for painting and such, maybe I have lost too many brain cells but the new rules were just not sinking in and it was going to cost another 1000 on top of the 500ish I spent, to get a full tau army with everything I wanted, so I sold all my Warhammer goodies.

With x-wing I taught my wife the rules within 20 minutes and she was playing with me. She loves chew-ie and the falcon even if she is not a big fan of the movies. I have spent about 500 on X-wing and have just about everything current and everything preordered (minus the big ships which I will pick up as a gift later this year)

I say all of this to say that I can spend between 85 - 600, (the cost of a pc/ps4/xbox1/Wiiu with games) and have a shot at winning worlds (base starter 1-X, 2-B). 30 minutes of my time learning and I have a game that rocks with so much replay valve.

Plus even if you never played X-wing the ships are just cool to look at.

Yeah, count me among the hooked and landed. I haven't won a game yet, but I love the way that the game combines skill, planning and variance with a great theme and tiny excellent models. Last game I lost slamming into an asteroid I thought I could clear - how cinematic!

I've been putting spare hours this week into making winglets for my Royal Guard flight, all the while dreading the day when I will actually have to play them. Squints are so squishy! But at least with four red TIEs I will explode in style ;)

Same here, been playing warhammer but the rules of this game are just so much better and jou having to spenderen a lot of money and paint for a year or more makes this game perfect imo.

If I have to choose between playing Warhammer/40K or X-Wing I will sell all my GW stuff in a hearthbeat.

I play a lot and the ships are still cool to look at :) .

Half the fun of X-Wing is just flying the ships around in your hands, making the TIE fighter noises and saying "pew pew!". :)

I may never play another GW game again, but I wont sell any of it,have too much time and effort involved. Cheaper games with small model count is the new thing, not 1000000000 point armies that cost me a house payment to build!

I am a very big Warhammer Fantasy fan, having collected 15 armies all between 4k and 12k each and love playing them. But the painting, while rewarding in its own right, is a distant 2nd place when it comes to games.

That said... I picked up X-Wing just for a go-to game when there wasn't enough time for Warhammer. The rules took a quick 10 minutes to read (and VERY coherent, structured, clear, and all in one place! GW should take notes!) and sometime during that first game, my innermost Star Wars childhood was unleashed and each game since has been equally exciting.

X-Wing hasn't replaced my beloved Warhammer Fantasy... probably never will. But X-Wing is no longer just a filler game for me. It's a permanent part of my gaming hobby! And pre painted means less prep work and more games. FFG has truly recaptured my early 80's memories.

My name is Rob and I am addicted to X-Wing Miniatures Game.

See, I was kind of the opposite;
I enjoyed board games mainly because I have a friend who was really into everything from Descent, to Mansions of Madness, to Warhammer, to Munchkins. I like playing them, but mainly as a group, with 3+ players.

Then my wife got me XWM for a Christmas present. And I actually didn't want to play it at all. I was afraid that I wouldn't like it, and that it was too expensive for my gaming spirit.

I bought a second core set within 48 hours of playing my first game.

I am pretty sure XWM is one of my wife's biggest regrets... Not only because it hurts my wallet, but because I have a hard time wanting to play anything else.

Wow! I go to bed and wake up to find other people in the same boat. Lol. (Yea, I sleep 3 hours and keep weird time schedules)

I'm so glad I picked this up.yes, half the fun is flying the ships around the basement and making noises.

My first foray into GW was actually war of the ring. Got 3 armies for that. Next it was 40k and then tomb kings and wood elves.

I actually enjoy building more than painting. The fantasy has to go to make more room, but the rest can just stay packed up.

Im really looking forward to comparing notes with you all on this forum and learning to be better at this game, ill be asking questions soon so just bear with me.

My first few games I thought 'I'm not very good at this, don't think I'll buy any of it...'

Me and my 40 ships collection don't know what you're talking about..........

No, I'm sure no one else has that issue... I think the following comic shows that.

I've posted this before as have others. But in a thread like this, it just needs to be posted again. :)

I did 40k, still kinda do warmachines and Flames of War. But X-wing is my main game. The other day I added up all the money I'm going to spend between the Transport, CR-90, Wave 4 and Rebel Aces... I didn't have the will to add in what I've already spent.

But it's money well worth it, considering how much more enjoyment I've gotten out of X-Wing compared to other games. The other thing is, this is the best online community I've ever had the fortune to be part of.

LOL great cartoon VanorDM, nothing more accurate  do you have a link for your cartoon collection? I would like to share it with my club buddies

going back to topic, My story is pretty much the same, but my friends and I still play lots of Flames of War besides of also lots of X-Wing; I think FFG just gave us the perfect combination of simple rule set and game depth, it would be hypocrite of me to say that painted models isn't a plus however since I love so much building and painting I can't help keep out of my mind the idea to do my own re-paints.

and if all that weren't enough X-wing brings so many childhood memories that feel so right :)

me and my 4 warhammer 40k playing group have HUUUUUGE ARMIES and well painted for sure instead of mine iam not that great of a painter but my mates are omgeeeez well. we still do play 40k on our regular sundays we enjoy our x wing games on our fridays now ^^.

we have 2 empire players 2 rebel ones and the oldest of us is playin both sides and has a huuuge collection.

Got into miniature gaming with Heroclix. I became addicted to buying the miniatures. I spent a lot of my waking hours making teams, playtesting, and playing in tournaments. $1k and almost a year later, all my friends that played it quit playing and I sold off my more expensive pieces. Still have over 400 figures. Friend introduces me to X-Wing a month later. One year later and I feel that I haven't wasted money on it as just about anyone will play this rather than an overly complicated, pay-to-win game like heroclix.

Yeah....I pretty much gave up 40k once I got this game for Christmas. I dont think I will ever go back. I love how FFG regularly updates the rules faq, that the rules are easy and simple, and they are consistent with their releases. I feel like GW is just out there to take my money and doesnt care about the game. FFG takes much better care of their customers...

Have played 40K since 1st Ed, WFB since 2nd Ed. Delved into other games such as Bloodbowl, Mordhiem, Gorka Morka, Necromunda (**** GW has alot of my money), Starship Troopers, not too mention the plethora of card games and board games. I purchased my first Core set of X-wing.... That has led to my playing of SW:LCG...

I sold everything, the whole kit an kaboodle. 40K gone, WFB gone, cards gone. My introduction to X-wing, and the card game, came at a time where my interest level in playing/painting/building/etc al. had waned. I had lost all drive to play/compete and the rules sets had gotten stale. Just the thought of picking up a paintbrush one more time, or having to put up with a rules lawyer over some obvious GW typo, was getting too much. I had burnt out.

But then the shining light that is X-wing illuminated my gaming future. Now I feel reborn, like I am sitting back in my fathers front garden under the pine tree with a paperclip and some knotted string, with Han and Luke climbing into a treetop village while Stormtroopers and Speederbikes move through the undergrowth that is the garden-bed. This game has given me back my early-teen years. Thank you FFG.

I now devote all my gaming time and money to X-Wing and the LCG.

Cheers

I played 40K long ago, so I'm not one of those people who saw the light and converted. I had received my first real paycheck from my first real job and decided to "give this a try"

Now I think I'm considered one of the pillars of the X-Wing community at my FLGS.

But I'll add this: It seems according to the staff there, many people are leaving 40K and Magic to come to X-Wing. For 40K I imagine a simpler science fiction game that can still be customized is a great appeal to those who like playing with plastic figurines for more than just army men.

After all why chase $80 upgrades and an ever expanding army when a dozen figures gives you nearly all the options available for one side in X-Wing? Model count in-game is very low, and the rules are uncomplicated and only cost $15 to expand with. The sky and beyond is the limit for X-Wing... the only problem is it's overwhelming success cannot keep up with demand.

But that's okay. Though the release waves are long, so far FFG has not disappointed in quality.

Yeah, count me among the hooked and landed. I haven't won a game yet, but I love the way that the game combines skill, planning and variance with a great theme and tiny excellent models. Last game I lost slamming into an asteroid I thought I could clear - how cinematic!

Red never goes out of fashion. Except for...you know...exploding.

I love the game. Simple rules, beautiful models, genuinely tactical on a level of the best of the GW games (Space Hulk springs to mind), pretty cheap on the scale of 40k/Magic.... what's not to like.

Plus, with the new films coming out, you'd like to think that there'll be a whole new set of characters and fighters to be dumped into the universe in a perfect timescale to be wave 5 and beyond...

I've played 40K since the advent of Rogue Trader along with many other GW games. I quit actively playing 40K around v3 or v3.5, the cost is ridiculous but that was not the issue. The rules just plain suck now and GW is no where near the company it used to be. Back in the day. we used to call the UK and the phone would be answered by the likes of Andy Chambers, Rick Priestly, etc... and we would inquire about rules, etc... maybe the birth of the Rulez Boyz? Anyway GW core games today are the ultimate suck. Their unsupported specialist games have always been their better products. Last time I submitted to a game of 40K to appease a friend, all I could think was that I would rather be playing X-Wing, zombicide, etc... anything but 40K.

As a gamer of 35 years experience who is accustomed to to the buy, build, paint combo; I am rather enjoying just opening and playing for once.
