How many ships of each type are useful?

By spindown, in X-Wing

I'm sure this has been asked before, but a quick search didn't turn up anything.

I know some people buy enough ships to be able to fly any possible 100 point squad, but having 6 HWK-290s, 4 TIE Advanced or 4 Shuttles seems pointless because you're never going to use all those ships except, perhaps, for the novelty.

In your opinion, what is the maximum number of ships of each type that can actually be useful in effective, non-gimmicky 100 point lists?

I've been wondering this myself lately. I'm just glad that I only had two TIE Interceptors before they announced Imperial Aces. I know people who have too many TIE Interceptors now and only bought Imperial Aces for the pilots and upgrades.

For casual play with all the bases covered, probably 4X,2Y,2B,2A,1HWK,1YT for the Rebels and 6 TIE, 4 Interceptors, 1 Advanced, 2 Bombers, 1 Firespray, and 1 Shuttle. You may eventually want more As or Bs but I'd wait until the Rebel Aces pack unless you really, really wanted to run more of them.

For competitive play, you'll sometimes see two YTs or two Firesprays, but that's fairly unusual.

That lets you do the ever-popular TIE swarm, the 4 Red X-Wing, the XXBB, the Number of the Beast (Garven, Dutch, Kyle), and most of the other popular combinations. But there are certain popular combinations that pull cross-ship (eg, the Heavy Laser Canon comes with the Slave I and the Lambda but is often used on B-Wings) where you may find yourself short on cards.

I'm not sure if you can count only ships.... before the Aces if you want to fly 4 TIE/IN with ptl, then you will need 4 a-wings...

I will buy 2 Ys, As, Bs, Es, Zs, TIE/in, TIE/x1, TIE/sa, TIE/D and phamton, 2 core sets, and one of the others expansion. I think there isn't necessary to buy 2 Xs and TIE/ln expasions. But that just me. :)

The most you'll want of most fighters is 4. 4 Xs, 4 Ys, 4 interceptors ect...

There's no need for more then 1 Advanced or 2 hwks IMO.

But 4 of any fighter will normally work well.

Yeah, I'm asking with the upcoming repaints in mind. Since repaints seem to be a regular thing now, I want to avoid buying too many ships.

I have 4 of all the smaller Imp ships except I have 6 Ties,, and 1 Firespray want to buy 1 more, and 1 shuttle.

I like having extra so my wife can play me.

Im buy 3 of all the rep ship except 2 Falcons and 2 HWK's

You'll want at least one of each expansion if you want Wedge and Howlrunner, arguably the two best pilots for their respective ships.

I can't really say for Imps (I only fly Rebels), but for Rebels, you can generally make a useful list out of four Xs, Bs, Ys, or As, and two HWKs or Falcons. Any more than that is definitely overkill, but you don't necessarily need that much.

I only fly Imps, just trying to give the wife as much room for variations as I can.

Then I must be unique, I have almost 4 of everything, and way more than that in imperial forces.. but admittedly I buy so I can field lists from both factions. Much of the time I am the only one with the game or ships... so I have to come heavy..

The only ships I have less than 4 are 2 HWKs, and 3 shuttles, and firesprays... for now.. lol.. may get one or two more shuttles to modify and repaint haha I am addicted to repaints.

Hmmmm let's see.. from memory...

3 shuttles

3 Firesprays

4 YT 1300s

6 X wings

4 A, B, Y wings

15 TIE fighters

12 TIE interceptors

7 TIE bombers

4 TIE Advanced

Is that all of them.. lol... too much money in this game...

Yeah.. I'm a little nuts... ah well.. c'est la vie

Dunno... I like 1X, 1Y, 1B, 1A for Rebels, as for Imperials..

2 Squints, 2 Eyeballs and 1 Dupe. I hope to add a Defender to that list.

4 Shuttles with Engine Upgrades actually performs fairly well :)

But yeah, it seems like 8 Ties, 5 Interceptors/Bombers/As, 4 Shuttles/Bs/Xs/Ys/Hwks, 3 YT-1300s/Firespray-31s/Advanceds are the best for a single player's collection. That'l handle just about all of the fleets.

You can check my signature for what I happen to have, keeping in mind that I bought Imperial Aces a couple weeks ago and now am searching for the normal Interceptor, I'm a Rebel player, so I'll be getting more things Rebel in the future. I just buy one of everything at the least, but I enjoy both factions just fine.

I'm glad someone asked this.

I have been thinking about getting about 10 more ships, and have been going over ideas in my head, both for Rebels and for Imperials.

One thing to seriously consider is the upgrade cards. Do you NEED 4 shuttles? I know some people here would scream "YES!," because of their love for the Dairy Void Bison, but I don't think I will buy 4 of them...

However, I wouldn't mind having a bunch of the "advanced sensors" cards...

I know people who have too many TIE Interceptors…

NOT POSSIBLE

I have 4 or 5 of every ship except the big ones. I have 2 of each of them. I bought 5 core sets when I found some cheap at target. I have only 2 Hawks and 2 advanced. With aces, I now have 8 ints. Half of my ships are still in the packages. For instance, I have 4 bwings but have never needed more than 2. Same with a wings and ywings. I think 4 X wings is a good idea. But like I said. Half of my fleet had never been out of the box. So you definitely don't need all that.

Bjorn, I understand what you mean!

4 of any given ship type typically makes a good list. It's really that simple.

You don't need 4 of each, having 4 won't hurt. But at the same time 1 of each isn't going to give you a lot of options.
