Yuuzhan Vong: Only Speculation

While attempting to create a thorough history for my Edge of the Empire character, I noticed a name kept appearing: Yuuzhan Vong

Since I have destined my character to die before "official" war breaks out, I couldn't help but be curious about this strange species name I had never heard of. So I clicked on the link on Wookieepedia and couldn't help but feel "wow! I want these in my games! Gimme gimme gimme!"

I'd love to have organic ships in X-Wing games. They would make a good 3rd or 4th faction for the game. I say 4th faction as I am also really hoping for pirates as a 3rd.

But what makes me think FFG would even bother?

Well the Battle of Endor was 4 ABY.

The Yuuzhan Vong war was between 25 and 29 ABY.

Rumour has it the sequel Trilogy is set about 30 years after Endor.

I for one think that this is a race, and war, that are far too awesome for any movie maker to want to pass up.

Let the speculation commence

Just keep any disagreement polite as this is supposed to be fun

We could see this, given the number of Pilots coming out that show up. Quite a few of them are well known before and through the war with the Yuuzhan Vong.

The new movie Trilogy actually takes place just AFTER the war has finished, based on the timeline. The only thing would be, how exactly would the Yuuzhan Vong ships fly? They were extremely different from the starfighters of the New Republic.

If you thought the Vong were cool from just reading wookiepedia, you should pick up a few of the New Jedi Order series books; they're quite good.

the only downside with using vong as a faction in XWM would be a limited variety of ships available in the lore. The Vong only ever use two fighter-sized craft that I can think of: Coralskippers and a heavier fighter used by elite Vong forces late in the story arc.

You're going to get a lot of different opinions on the Vong. Personally their ships were cool, but as a culture and a species they were pretty stupid. They didn't really feel like Star Wars. To the point they literally didn't follow the rules of the universe. They didn't believe in the force so it didn't affect them. They had biotech melee weapons that blocked lightsabers. They were self harming nutjobs, something that would have left their culture at stone age level tech in any cultural cycle that took such things into account. All in all they irritated me and just stopped feeling like Star Wars.

That was the flaw in my plan. But they could always make the war last longer ( my wishful thinking )

I'd be keen to know any books which feature them. Especially those "books" with pictures.

As to the limited craft, I think there might be three. Not many, but there's a triangular ship but I couldn't post the image (FFG wouldn't let me :( ), the Manta looking thing and the many-finned whale looking thing.... .....will try to learn more....especially names.

I suspect that either the Yuuzhan Vong and the NJO will be centerpieces of episode VII, or they'll be written out of the continuity entirely. As for X-wing Minis, FFG has said they're interested in keeping things confined to the Galactic Civil War era--so I don't expect to see the Vong in the game. (Of course they also said nothing bigger than the Falcon, but...)

I started reading your comment and felt like :( then I got to the end :D "nothing bigger than a Falcon my fuzzy bum cheeks"

iam totaly no fan of the vong -.-

they killed so many god **** well known star wars veterans >.>

and hey come on living bio creature like ships ??? yeah sure

Blech. Hated them.

I hated the YV. I will buy nothing related to them.

This is the first time I've seen anyone enthusiastic about the Vong on this forum!

A large draw for Star Wars was the tech and hardware of the universe, so the Vong don't do it for me because they violate all this. Main characters were killed and they did things to the universe I didn't like much. About the only starship I thought was attractive of theirs was the Miid ro'ik capital ship. Their Coralskippers looked stupid.

I'd rather see things like Cloudcars, ground troops, or Prequel era stuff reskinned for the Rebellion-era than the Y-V.

Throw another vote in for "WTF were they thinking?" with the Vong. Horrible, out-of-place attempt to be "current" by hopping on the "living tech" trend and "edgy" by making them S&M freaks. Living bioships that fire black holes? Pfft. There's a lot of bad stuff in the EU, and the YV top the list. And when they're up against things like the Sun Crusher that's a fighter-sized indestructible ship that can destroy entire solar systems, that's a very high bar.

Fortunately, I think the Vong will be a big part of what gets wiped out of the continuity when the new movies come out. They're just too big a departure from Star Wars (which is part of their problem in the first place) and they're really not the least bit appropriate for the age range Star Wars has always tried to include.

we have a portion of people who already hate the upcoming wave 4 ships, as they are not OT. The wave 4 ships have at least a Star Wars feel and look to them. going in a YV direction would not be well received by the masses. Unless.....the new movies included them. Then all bets are off.

I did not like the Vong either. I am about 5 books from the end of the series and I am having a hard time finishing them.

This... couldn't agree more..

I, for one, hope the powers that be... NEVER make a Vong ship... I quit readin that series after the first book, and it was a struggle to get through that one...

Well having read most of the NJO books I have to say the Vong blow. And I'm sorry but the ships would look ridiculous, basically bits of corral flying round, way better that a Tie or X-Wing....NOT!

The fact the Suncrusher was made to survive the blast is... Well Star Wars is full of things that don't make sense. At least the Suncrusher had a cool plot behind it. The Vong were just... Not fun. Or Interesting. Or anything else I want in Star Wars. They could have been cool in another setting, against other opponents, or even as protaganists. But they didn't feel right.

I'd prefer anything dealing with the Chiss rather than the YV especially seeing as the Chiss are canon due to SWTOR, well some sorta form of cannon besides the books. And with the new Star Wars films it seems lie the YV will be the first thing to be cut from the Star Wars universe.

Plus if they were added would they have some kind of planetoid upgrade that can only be thrown at Chewbacca?

The chiss sounds like a great idea, didn't they have claw craft?

I'm betting they get removed myself.

Cool

Some strong arguments against the Vong. Didn't appreciate how bad they were but that's why I put it to the community. As for "Galactic Civil War Period", at least one Vong scout reached the Galaxy as early as 3,963 BBY and between 229 BBY and 89 BBY a living planet arrived. Around 27 BBY the Vong engaged the Chiss Expansionary Defense Force.

So while I accept the dislike of the Vong from those who have had to suffer knowing them, the timeline argument is not valid. If you went for a strict "Galactic Civil War Only" approach that would mean no pirates and no Chiss....

But I have to say Chiss look cool. Like the look of the ships. But for some reason I think of Mystique whenever I see pictures of them.....

Sorry no pictures. FFG won't let me. Even though Mystique had clothes on.

If my guess is right about what Episode VII will be focused on, we could both get our StealthX's and Chiss Clawcraft!

The Yuuzhan Vong are pretty hard to fit in by themselves though, since they wouldn't be allied with anyone else and they have a relatively small selection of starfighter types. I expect this game will remain 2-faction unless a prequel variant is released.

I actually rather enjoyed the New Jedi order series and the vong. I also agree with whoever said that they will either be the center point of the new movies or completely removed from existence. Unfortunately for those of us that actually like the Vong I believe that they will be jettisoned into the creative black hole of not surviving to be cannon.

On the note of killing a bunch of beloved vets during the series would you rather those characters died of cancer, heart attack or general old age which would be boring to read and be a death without meaning or die fighting saving the galaxy?

And so Luke Skywalker gasped and weezed, fighting for every last breath as he sat in his wheelchair with a plaid blanket over his trembling knees. Then, one last flatulation which fills his colostomy bag and he dies.
