New Player with Quad X-Wing Build Idea

By muirman, in X-Wing

So, I'm totally new to the game and fairly new to the miniatures gametype all together. However I have always been interested in fighter combat throught history and especially in the Star Wars Universe. I've been messing around with one of the build helpers online while i wait for my purchases to come it (2xCore sets, 2xX-Wing expansions, and 1xFalcon expansion) and I found that i'm drawn to the Quad X-Wing (possibly due to the military connection where every fighter formation is made up of multiple pairs of fighters working together and supporting one another. who knows)

I have a few Ideas for the builds I think i might work well, but any advice would be appreciated

One idea is tto have:

2x Red Squadron w/ either shield upgrades or engine upgrade

2x Red Squadron (no upgrades)

Another idea was using this set up

Biggs w/ shield upgrade, R2-D6 and Veteran Instincts

3x Red Squadron (no Upgrade)

Any critiques would be appreciated :)

Often we find that a naked Biggs is the best Biggs, because he draws all the early fire. Take your second build strip Biggs. Use those points for your 3 Reds. It's a good idea to pick ships with the same PS, easier to fly.

You might also want to try:

Gaven

Biggs

Red x2

You could then put an R2 droid on Gaven and the Reds. (If you only have 2 R2s, more sure one of them goes of Gaven to help with his ability.)

so something like

1x Naked Biggs

2x Red w/hull upgrade

1x Naked red?

Give it a run! If you find you're running into a stress issue, then replace the hull upgrades with R2s. But a more durable X-wing is a more dangerous X-wing for sure. (Love those new Hull upgrade cards!)

Alright thanks, It seems like a list i could get behinnd. Now I just have to get my stuff in the mail and start practicing, any good tips for someone who may not be able to find any games but still wants to practice?

Im on my phone so I cant link, but thre are some good videos on youtube. Then bust out your asteroids and go crazy!

Alright cool, Thanks for the help guys.

Oh, would there be any major downsides if I didnt use biggs and went with my first build? or is using Biggs pretty much a staple?

IMO Biggs is only useful if protecting a high value target (Wedge, Dagger with Heavy Laser Cannon or Han/Lando). There is some value in having Biggs as he can be getting extra die because he is at range 3 behind an asteroid but to protect reds feels a bit of a a waste. You could donwgrade to another red and free 2 points for astromechs.

so something kind of like my first build, but maybe Astromechs instead of shield or engine upgrades?

Im considering a Biggs, Garven, 2 x Red or Rookie list myself.

Garven & Biggs is a nice example as Biggs gets extra focus (key to survival) and Garven lasts longer and is able to give TL+Focus to other Xs.

Check out Vassal. It's a way you can practice alone or play against others over the internet.

Completely off topic, love your quote from I-Jedi, easily one of my favourite Star Wars novels, the force is strong in this one

thanks haha i'm currently in the middle of it right now . Although its kinda weird because its the first one i've read that is written from the first person perspective.

Also, it seemed to fit because I know i'm not the only new guy, and I know that others are gonna pick it up much faster than i will haha

Thanks

Well if you like that then read the Jedi search trilogy which takes place in the same time frame, really good series of books!

Alright, i'll check them out, i'm more or less making my way from the X-Wing series reading everything that come out in order haha

Mate I got the same 4 X-wings fetisj and this is by far my favorite squad.

Wedge, ptl, R2 astromech, Biggs and 2 Rookies.

2x Red Squadron w/ either shield upgrades or engine upgrade

2x Red Squadron (no upgrades)

Any critiques would be appreciated :)

Personally, my fave 4X list is:

Luke w/ R2D2, draw their fire & engine up.

3 Rookie pilots

Luke helps keep the rookies around longer and r2 regens any lost shields (engine upgrade helps with positioning because green moves are predictable)
