A-wing question: Still

By R22, in X-Wing

Pre-Rebel Aces the big push was for A-wings to get the systems upgrade, in keeping with the fluff of it actually having sensor and jamming systems. Now with the Chaardan Refit and A-wing Test Pilot on the scene, do people feel the A-wing is 'complete?' If the systems upgrade were to be added, how would you do or cost it? Do you think in addition to the new buffs the systems upgrade would make the A-wing OP?

EDIT: I screwed up the title of this thread, sithspit.

I think some/many/most people considered the A-Wing to be 1-2 points too high. A lot of the ideas were ways to effectively bring down the cost of the A-Wing without directly reducing it.

Instead FFG gave us a way to get the A-Wing cost to what it "should" be, at the cost of the missile slot which many people don't use in the first place.

So I think you'll see more A-Wings after Rebel Aces come out.

Its jousting efficiency alone will now be midway between a TIE Fighter and the B-wing, so it will be very competitive. Its dial and boost at won't even be needed to make it competitive, but it will make it that much better. Adding a system upgrade would make it OP, especially with boost. It doesn't need any more love. If people can get over taking 2 attack ships, it should see a lot of use.

It'll be a great ship now. Not that I thought it was bad before!

It was having a little success already, I don't know that spamming a ton of A's will be the best use of the new refit but it does make every list that already used 1-2 awings 2-4pts lighter and that opens up a lot of cans o' worms.

I would expect to see a lot of lists upgrade to a named pilot with the point reduction and run pretty similar or drop one high point ship for an A and a Z.

I'm totally running 6 A-wings as soon as I can!

As Aces and Wave 4 comes out, we will see a wide range of squads being run. The A-Wing will fill a lot of spots in Rebel builds.

I've said it before. the prototype A wing will be the most cost efficient ship in the game. for the cost of hull upgrade on an academy you get to turn two of those hp to crit saving shields, you get a better dial, and you get better actions.

I already used the prototype a lot. I did not need these free points.

I guess I always loved the A-wing. I never really thought it was over priced, but I also don't use missile on them. The Refit basically lets me take a ship I like already for fewer points.

As for system upgrades, I never really felt the lack. I am by no means unacquainted with Star Wars and its EU stuff, but I didn't know it had special systems. I feel most of the demand for more ships to have system upgrades kinda comes from the fact that system upgrades are cool and science fiction-y. You can almost always come up with a reason why a science fiction space fighter should have some cool science fiction-y upgrades.

However, if the system upgrade was given to all the ships that people have asked for it to be added to, wouldn't that take away from the coolness of other ships.

If the X-wing had system upgrades the B-wing would become an x-wing but with less agility and a worse dial and more hits.

I think it's awesome that they avoided giving it a sensors slot. It seems like the most popular solution to every ship lately had been to give it a sensors slot. That would make way less cool and unique. I am so excited to throw swings with two epts on the table.

Oh... I'm sure it will be done... it'll even be a blast to fly... I just don't know if 6x2 att dice at PS 2 is going to "hold up" vs. a lot lists and I'm pretty sure it'll lead to some. very.. long... games....

I would love to see a system upgrade on the A-Wing, but I hope we don't for the sale of game balance. A Green Squad Pilot with Prototype Veteran, Expert Handling, and either Daredevil or PtL would be a monster; Advansed Sensors would be overkill. Same with Sensor Jammer+Elusiveness+PtL. The one use I can think of that is "needed" is Arvel + Advanced Scopes; then, he could actually be a blocker AND get an action.

I'm a big fan of A-Wings already since they're fun to fly and GSP with PtL was one of my go-to ships. Now I can field one for 2 points less -and- throw on another talent, which is superb. I'm interested in trying some GSP's with PtL, Stealth Upgrade, Chaardan Refit and Prototype/Expose. Kind-of pricey, but it makes flanking -and- evading that much easier with the option of Expose when in a good position.

I really do think the A-wing should have had system upgrade. It makes sense both in fluff and gameplay, and could really have made the A-wing stand out. However, it is getting a lot of other good stuff so it's hard to really complain too much.

It's much more puzzling why they decided to add more to the B-wing instead of maybe the Y-wing in Rebel Aces but that's a topic for another thread

The couple new toys for the A-Wing will make it much more competitive. While there still could be some call for a Systems Upgrade slot Rebel Aces will mean it would probably have an extra cost added to it instead of being the "add-on" we believed would help make the A-Wing more competitive.

With the Test Pilot giving A-Wings access to an Elite Pilot skill you're giving them more capabilities and options. The big kicker is simply the missile slot that gives back points as it makes the A-Wing something people would play. If the A-Wing had come out with the Prototype at 15 points with no missile slot its play value would have risen considerably although you would have had cries for a missile slot at it was the best rebel missile boat in the X-Wing Video games.

Totally. A-Wings are always one of the best and most fun ships to play in any flight sim/combat games out there. Rogue Squadron III makes them almost downright broken with the regenerating missile supply.
