Do I need the Starter?

I think somebody needs less caffeine. But great to see the enthusiasm.

1 will do just fine. 3 if I want an X-Wing and Tie Fighter 100 point list to practice with.

While reading the rules, which took no time at all, it seems this will be an easy game to learn. Though I'll probably get destroyed a few times before I get good as there appears to be a lot more skill needed compared to other games I've played.

Yeah 3 is the most you'll want. Because you still need the X-Wing and Tie Fighter expansion for Wedge and Howlrunner, plus the other stuff.

X-Wing honestly reminds me of Othello that way, minutes to learn, a lifetime to master.

X-Wing does have an amazing amount of depth considering how small the rulebook is, more then a lot of other games out there that come with a $70 hardcover tome of rules.

I too contemplated not buying a starter to play but then realized I would need the damage deck. Then I got a second starter because my daughter got somewhat interested in the game, that way we can play each other at home as well as the occasional tournament.

Where questions arise is in the upgrade cards, can I do this with that? My concern is that future expansions don't cause more confusion with the game.

Well so far the single biggest confusion has been Cluster missiles... After that I don't think anything else can come close. :)

But so far with wave 1-3, Imperial Aces, and with Transport, CR-90, Wave 4 and Rebel Aces to be released, with what we have and know so far. The game hasn't really become more confusing. Just has more options with each wave.

In all honesty I brought 4 starters on clearance from Target. Now I will say that it was it was a good thing for a couple of reasons,

First I have 4 xwings and 8 ties.

Second I have 12 atk and def dice which is perfect for the wife and I playing.

Third sell 1x and 2 ties should give you enough to get 1 xwing and 1 tie expansion for the different pilots.

Cause at most your going to run a 7 tie swarm and a 4 xwing swarm.

That amount of caffeine would give me an anxiety attack at best, heart attack at worst.

1st: I guess you can't play X-Wing and not have at least one X-Wing.

2nd: Plenty of dice would be a good thing. Never know when one might disappear. Though I was thinking of getting the app.

3rd: True! Anything I don't want I can sell on ebay.

Though I was thinking of getting the app.

But rolling actual physical dice is vastly more satisfying than pushing a button.

Plus, when a die isn't performing you can sit on the bench for a turn or 2.

True

But, if the dice rolls on the app are always unfavorable you can blame the technology. Who do you blame when rolling the dice by hand results in disaster?

You can acquire all the pieces of the starter kit with out getting a starter kit. Most of us will tell you once you start down this road of playing X-Wing you'll want more and more ships. Eventually, you'll be wanting those X's and Ties. If the $40 of the starter seems like a scary cost look around online or Target as many have picked up cheap sets. Again if $40 seems high this may not be the game for you, honestly.

Price wasn't the issue

Was merely a discussion of whether or not I needed to buy a starter to play. I'm not after X-Wings and Tie Fighters, and have downloaded the rules off FFG, but as has been pointed out I need the Starter for the Damage Cards. Dice, Templates and Upgrade Cards are a good addition too. Chances are that, individually, it'll likely cost the same as a Starter Set.

I shop at Wayland Games and Amazon mostly anyway.

With Amazon I trade in my unwanted 40K RPG books and use the online trade-in vouchers to shave a few £'s off a Starter Set. Might even get it free if my books earn enough:

Dark Heresy Rulebook

Dark Heresy Ascension

Deathwatch Rulebook

Deathwatch Rites of Battle

Deathwatch Ark of Lost Souls

Rogue Trader Rulebook

Rogue Trader Battlefleet Koronus

Black Crusade Rulebook ( though not good condition )

That's sure to get me a good discount :)

I was up for 42 hours once and at the 32 mark I need to go to work so I got a 13 shot espresso, things started to get weird at that point.

Simply put.... YES!

By the time you buy 3rd party rulers, flight paths, tokens, and dice you'll have already spent more than the starter kit. Even if by some miracle you haven't spent the same amount on all that stuff, you still don't have the damage cards, the two Tie Fighters, or the X-wing; plus all the mission tokens and the asteroids. In the States, there are several places you can pick one up for less than $30. It's a no brainner and you'll love every bit of it!

Things like this perhaps:

Do I need a Starter?

Short Answer: Yes.

Long Answer: Yes, I suggest you buy one.

Why?

The value of the contents Core Set is exceptional. If you are the type of person who would invest in 3rd Party replacments for the contents anyway, sure I could understand forgoing the Core Set, but even then, the Dice, Pilots, Tokens, and most importantly the Damage Deck, make it still worth seriously considering getting at least one.

Not to mention the models.

Why buy anything at all? There are pictures of everything and you can use saltshakers and chess pieces to stand in for the ships?

You would be playing the "Hardware Wars" version of the game then.
