Suggestions for dps?

By CharismaticMechanic, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

So, to make a high-dps character, what are your suggestions?

Solid way is picking Hired Gun, Marauder specialization, getting to 5 in Brawn during character creation, focusing on Melee and Brawl, and then grabbing as many of the Marauder talents as you can.

If you want to be more dependent on weapons, for pure damage, there's Mercenary Soldier of Hired Gun for most guns, Heavy of Hired Gun for rifles with auto-fire (and later a specialization with Jury Rig to lower the activation cost of auto-fire); Agility up to 5 in character creation, focusing skills on Ranged Light or Ranged Heavy based on what weapon you plan on using.

Keep in mind though, the system in general, but EotE especially, is about having characters rougher around the edges - it's better and more logical in most cases to have your characters not be too focused on just one thing, particularly just combat - it also keeps you as a player from getting bored from just waiting for that one type of scenario where your skills come in handy.

Lathrop has the big builds covered.

The Dr. Velociraptor build is a lark. Trandoshan for claws and Brawn. Marauder for Feral Strength. Doctor for Pressure Point. Garnish with Merc Soldier or Assassin or Gadgeteer for Deadly Accuracy (Brawl).

Going straight DPS is a dangerous prospect though. Your GM will likely be forced to start throwing really nasty stuff at you. If the rest of your team isn't trying to make combat efficient characters this can be a pain for them.

To start with anything with agility 4 and an autofire weapon. (heavy blaster rifle is go too)

Klatooinian outlaw tech, seems quickest way to get silly quickly. (tinkerer and jury rigged)

Or a pilot, because shooting people with anti spaceship weapons, never stops been funny.

Go play a videogame?

Agreed.

I'm assuming that DPS does not stand for Dual Power Sensor?

It's not needed in this game. Pick whatever weapon you think is cool. You should focus on your actual character not combat.

Anyone can increase damage potential. Combine the right talents with the right attachments and weapon and you can have good damage dealing potential. Personally I haven't put much thought into it, but I am sure others have.

Be sure you can contribute in interesting ways out of combat or you will be incredibly bored. I've been there.

Some of the major builds have been covered already. The plus side to being really good at shooting is you are also a naturally good pilot with the Agility.

Define meaningful. I've seen characters tuned up for combat contribute in non-combat in meaningful ways. As long as you actually want to role-play you don't need aptitude to contribute out of combat. You can use what skills you have in imaginative ways. Or be comic relief ("Oh look, the brute is trying to be charming, heh heh."). The nice thing about this game is there is very little that is considered "unskilled". As long as everyone at the table is having fun that is all that is important.

Highest DPS: Gunner. Just don't leave the ship.

I'm not sure how specific you want, but I'll post what I did/am doing with my character. My character is a beast in combat, but is also useful out of combat. There are two reasons for this: I went bounty hunter, rather than hired gun (I feel their skills are generally more useful out of combat), and I sacrificed having high characteristics for balanced characteristics. I use dedication to compensate for this. Simply having a 3 in intellect makes a lot of checks, including all the knowledge skills, worth attempting.

Even if you don't do exactly what I did, perhaps you will get some ideas.

Start with human. Take 10 obligation. This gives you 120 xp. Raise Brawn, Agility, Intellect, and your choice of Cunning or Willpower (I opted for Willpower) to 3. Go Assassin. Get rank 2 ranged (heavy) and put the rest of your skills where you want or need them (I like stealth). Use your human skills to get ranks in resilience, discipline, gunnery, computers, or other skills you want but don't have access to as career skills. Keep in mind what the party has and will need. Purchase a slugthrower rifle, heavy clothing, stimpacks, and whatever misc gear you want. Get a heavy blaster rifle and padded armor and eventually heavy battle armor when you can.

Once you start getting xp, sprint for dedication on the assassin tree. Pick up a second rank in dodge while you're there, and anything else that's cheap that looks good, like grit or lethal blows. Sniper shot isn't a bad option either. Once you have what you want from Assassin, buy Gadgeteer. Again, Sprint for dedication. (Feel free to spend the extra 5 xp here and there to raise a skill to 1, particularly brawl and melee) Then buy Imp Armor master and a second Jury rigged. Now you should have 5 agility, and it's time to raise your ranged heavy ranks to 5. Then buy Deadly Accuracy. Buy whatever else you want on the gadgeteer tree, and raise your other skills. After that, you can buy a third specialization. Some I recommend are Merc Soldier, Pilot, Force Sens. Exile, Mechanic, or Outlaw Tech. It all depends what you want to do.

In my current game, the GM has each person making two characters, and they'll be traded off for different missions. The GM suggested that this secondary character of mine possibly be focused on combat, since the group is apparently lacking that. So let's get off our soapboxes and stop the moralizing attempts at which type of character is a "more pure roleplaying choice", yadda, yadda, and just focus on the question at hand. ;)

Thanks, those of you whose answers were on point, it's much appreciated. :)

I'm just following orders...

Deadly Accuracy, Force Sense (Force Rating 2+) and ranks in True Aim.

I went with Clawdite / Doctor.

3/4/2/2/2

Dr gets you Stim Application (+1 stat), Pressure point (bypass soak - Strain dam = Brawl+Medical Skill). Points into medicine & deception. Then after dedication you end up 4/4/2/2/2 ... and use the Stim to either get 5 in Brawn if you are fighting or 5 in Cunning if you are doing Deception and faceplay. After that get Marauder for all kinds of Feral Str (Brawl +dam), Endure (+soak).

You end up with a very playable 3 way character. Doctor, Spy, Brawler. You basically create a Mystique (shape-shifter/deception/martial artist) type character from X-Men.

My current character is Alex Darzu descendant of the shape-shifter sith lord Belia Darzu. Gives a great back story for searching for her past.

Nope, double pickle sauce

Bounty hunter martial artist, invest in that tree until you can pick any average difficulty critical hit and one of those lets you attack again... Keep it up you can either crit a man to death or stab him so many times he dies from wounds and this could be done all in one round.... GM: "Hey look it's Darth Vader"... 1 round later GM: "annnnnd he's dead"

Remember kids, if it has stats we can kill it!

Thats why I liked the stats on Vader in the Glare Peak module. It states that if you fight him, you die. GM gets to choose how.

For best DPS: Find a way to reliably get an Auto-blaster into personal combat. A Hutt on a Hutt Floater (from Lords of Nal Hutta ) gets you there for 8k credits. If you're not a guy with Gunnery, then add a Gunner Droid Brain when you get some extra cash.

Dead people skeletons!

I had a player make a Tank/DPS sniper. Basically did massive damage from a distance and if anyone tried to hit him he had wound Threshold of 20+ and 12 or 13 soak.

Most boring combat scenarios happened.

If your going DPS do yourself a favor don't go tank also or you will get bored quickly.

Have a player now who does a lot of damage as a jedi. Only has wounds of 13. If he doesn't take them out quickly he uses the most med packs. Walks around with a critical half the time. As a GM I living vicariously thru the character and player.

Then there is a tank who takes a lot of damage, but doesn't dish out a lot. But gives others boosts and builds the morale around him

This system is the best system for Star Wars, but it isnt a d20 game or a video game. Even combats should be dramatic.

Also despairs and triumphs explain a lot of what happens in both legends cannon and disney cannon to me
