I could't help but think of this:

Wow, they sure have a race/gender issue amongst their armed forces.

Well consider that the OT came out in the 70's and the idea of women in combat wasn't very well accepted.

To be honest the OT was rather advanced in terms of the female hero, in a sci-fi movie for that era.

Lucas has been a huge supporter of gender and race equality in his films. I think that is a part of why Star Wars remains the great American mythos.

Yeah the scene where the Princess grabs the blaster from the male hero and gets them all out of the fire... and into the trash compactor, was a pretty bold thing for the time.

Princesses weren't supposed to be able to use a weapon, let alone take charge and save the heroes... They were supposed to be helpless bait to trap the hero.

Porkins is not a male, he is dust floating in outer space somewhere.

As catachan illustrates, there are exactly two women with names in the original trilogy, and just one person of color. Then we flip to the prequels and we get Nute Gunray, Watto, and Jar Jar Binks as indicators of Lucas' open-mindedness and support for equality.

I don't think Lucas is a racist, misogynist jerk; I think his work is a product of a cultural moment where white male privilege was unacknowledged and completely acceptable, and I do think he deserves some credit for Leia's agency. But let's not make him out to be a civil rights pioneer, or anything.

Darth Vader is voiced by a black man. Lando is a good guy and doesn't die! And there are several strong female character in the original movies.

I don't think anyone would compare him to Dr. King or anything...

But 1 person of color and 2 named women in a movie in that era was pretty far from the norm.

As an aside, the first inter-racial kiss on TV was in Star Trek, when Kirk kissed Uhura.

There are three named women. You forgot Aunt Beru.

may I say - REALLY? its not a big deal. NOt everyone playing has the same knowledge of the people that someone else does. I know the main cast and thats about it, some randoms here and there from some of the games. Its not a big deal. And actually if we ever played, I may just call them the wrong gender to get in your head. Alls that matters for the game is who is shooting what. Not He/She/It.

sorry for the outburst, but really not that big of a deal, when I play I'm not playing to get "fictional history" correct. I'm there to shoot She/It down.

Good point; I stand corrected.

James Earl Jones never appears on screen, and he wasn't even credited in New Hope and Empire until the special edition re-releases in the 90s. And with respect to the strong female characters--name at least two women (1) whose names are mentioned in the films, and (2) whose actions have a strong impact on the course of the narrative. It's Leia and… ?

Again, I'm not saying Lucas is a terrible person--but he wasn't exactly breaking down barriers.

Wow, this took a turn I didn't expect.

As for Nute Gunray and Watto and Jar Jar... I think that has more to do with advancements in special effects. I mean, in the OT, you see several other species in Mos Eisley, but they're all bipedals in costumes. And from the way they move, you can tell that they have to be gentle with their movements. Exceptions being the Biths.

You also see creatures in EP5 in the form of the tauntaun and wampa, and the giant space slug. But then in EP6, you see Nien Numb, who again is just a face lift, but a much better job. And you also get the rancor, and dear god does the original VHS of him seem so soo soooo bad. I remember the first time I saw the special edition, I was blown away by how much better that scene looked. Which makes me feel bad because it looks horrible. Sadly, my VHS copy of EP6 has been played too many times and is no longer functional, so I can't go back and watch the original version anymore so I can't compare back to the original.

So, by Watto / Nute / Jar Jar is more to do with giving everything a spacey feel, and having the tech in order to back it up in the PT.

PS. Lucas was on thin ice through out all of EP4, so he really couldn't take any risks that would alienate his audience and cause the film to flop. He actually lied to producers and they told him to stop filming and that the movie had been scrapped... but he said he was already done and it was in post production... And then scrambled to shoot the second half of the movie. And the Tashe station scene was removed because critics claimed that Lucas had written american grafitti in space! And to keep it from seeming like that, he pulled the scene of all the friends hanging out.

What I wish they would have done in the first place is instead of a picture of the ship on the named pilot's card, they would have a picture of the actual pilot. If they did that than this would not even be an issue.

Ahem, there is an awesome scene in Chasing Amy where Hooper is speaking at a comic convention about how racist starwars was.

Best quote: And Jedi's the most insulting installment! Because Vader's beautiful black visage is sullied when he pulls off his mask to reveal a feeble, crusty, old white man! They tryin' to tell us that deep inside we all wants to be white!

Best part of the movie, just shut it off after that part. :)

Remember, this all happened in a galaxy far far away....

What's a Nubian?

BLACK RAGE!

I hope threads like this just prompt FFG to go female and non-white and aliens for any "made up" pilots they get to do. It's quite sad really.

I would have expected a thread about gender and race equality from a Star Trek forum.

This is Star Wars. Star Wars is about space legends and dashing heroes, not touting progressive messages on a canvas of science fiction. Let's have our adventures and not stare too hard at the social-political ramifications of the set pieces and characters, because they shouldn't matter here.

Well, if you go into the EU (as FFG already has) there's a decent amount of pilots to choose from

Females

Erisi Dlarit

Mirax Terrik

Rhysati Ynr

Lujayne Forge

Andoorni Hui

Jesmin Ackbar

Falynn Sandskimmer

Tyria Sarkin

Non Human

Peshk Vri'sky (Bothan)

Nawara Ven (Twi'lek)

Riv Shiel (Shistavanen)

Ooryl Qrygg (Gand)

Andoorni Hui (Rodian)

Jesmin Ackbar (Mon Cal)

Runt Ekwesh (Thakwaash)

Piggy saBinring (Gamorrean (for reals))

Grinder Thri'ag (Bothan)

And these are just the initial squads from the (reformed) Rogue Squadron and Wraith Squadron... Well, and Mirax... So there's plenty of stuff to pull from... And then there are the replacement folks like Aril Nunb that's a female Sullustan. And plenty of others. And lots of stuff to pull from between Yavin and the X wing series books.

I want Rhysati and Erisi in this game so bad. and Oorl!

Kyle and Jan are the only ones I got wrong. But for good reasons:

Kyle I mistook for Kylie. Unforgivable dumb moment. I hang my head in shame.

Jan. I actually know someone called Jan and she is a middle aged woman.
