Do edges stack ?

By JP_JP, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

The title is fairly obvious...

Do the attachments for melee weapons "mono-molecular edge" and "serrated edge" stack ? can you put both on the same weapon ?

My initial guess would be that you can't since they both modified the same "thing" on the melee weapon. But since there aren't any rules about it found anywhere, my player asked me to ask it here.

So ? what do you guys think ?
Could my player put both on its melee weapon ?

If you've got the free hard points I would say yes. It modifies the same thing, but I don't think in doing so they contradict one another.

There aren't strictly "upgrade slots" on weapons, just HP - which are intentionally more abstract. For example, you can stack scopes, explained as being a compound scope with multiple features. Same with blade edges.

so think of it this way, its a serrated edge that has been sharpened to an insane level. it's hard to do but it is doable. Cutco talks about doing it with their steak knives, call it the double-d edge: http://www.cutco.com/products/product.jsp?itemGroup=2159#.Uzyx-8ZrWa4

Ok thanks a lot guys :)

Huh, I thought there was a bit in attachments that stated you couldn't have the same type of attachment on an item, twice.

e.g. you can only have one type of barrel (marksman or augmented spin, not both)

e.g. you can only have one type of scope (telescopic or multi-optic, not both)

e.g. you can only have one type of edge (serrated or monomolecular, not both)

There is only a note that says that common sense should be used, and one Under Barrel attachment can be added.

Sounds like its mostly GM's discretion.

I ruled that my players had to choose one, as the serrating would make it difficult for the mono-edge to keep sharp. ymmv.

actually if you sharpen the lower parts of the serrated edge they stay sharper longer. the serrated edge's teeth protect the sharpened edge. they take the brunt of the hard impacts and the blade inside just cuts through the rest like butter.

I don't allow it. You can only have one edge, one scope and one barrel on the same weapon. Anything else is pure munchkinism.

I'll take a look at both upgrades before allowing it...

I kinda agree with Krieger... when I asked my player if you could put both "underbarrel flamethrower" and "underbarrel grenade launcher", he replied "yes" :P So he is standing on the edge of munchkinism... Fortunately for me, when he buys the talents to upgrade a characteristic, he's gonna raise his rank 1 willpower :) it makes sens because he wants to be better at coercion.

I think multiple underbarrel attachment strains plausibility in ways a compound edge or compound scope does not.

there are real world examples of a multi-bladed system. it actually makes for a better blade that offers the benefit of both at the sacrifice of neither. Double under barrel though…..nope thats pure fantasy. I could see someone putting multiple scopes on the same weapon (crazy redneck weaponsmiths) or a scope that offers multiple functionality but it should be more expensive and rare to find.

I guess just simply asking can a serrated knife be really really really sharp? Sure. I think anyway. I think in relation to no multiple barrels that's mostly because a barrel attachment conveys the potential for the most mods of any attachment, so it's already wearing a number of hats.

Ripley managed to jury rig a flamethrower together with an assault rifle/grenade launcher, so it's possible even if highly implausible. Still, just because you can doesn't mean you should.

Just configure it in an over/under configuration. It they don't all have to be under.
