Draft Tie list

By catsmacker, in X-Wing

I am currently waiting for my Imperial Aces pack to arrive. While I am waiting I was experimenting with the idea of a five Tie list, running Black Squadron Pilots with Expert Handling and Engine Upgrades to serve as Pseudo-Interceptors. What do folks think?

Why expert handling?

they already have barrel roll so yes, why EH? Indeed, the problem is your spending 20 points per guy when you could spend the same amount on an actual Interceptor that has 3 attack.

I like the option of losing target locks. That said, I haven't run into much in the way of ordinance. What else would you suggest?

I agree. Once I get my Imp Aces packs, they'll be rotated out for actual Interceptors.

Black Squadron with Push the Limit make more sense, but you're still overpaying for 2 attack ships. Might as well run 4x Sabers or 4x Royal Guard at that point.

You could start with a five ship list of Ties with 4 Black Squad w/ PTL and Howl w/PTL and still have 21 point left. That list might have your opponent pulling out his hair.

I really like this idea.

11 points left over*

also i dont think he would have 5 PtL's but for fun games sure why the hell not. if you want engine upgrade on all of them, that isnt to bad point wise. same as an Alpha minus one attack. maybe instead of throwing away 10 points upgrading the ties to some named ones?

Whoops, good catch on the points. I would definitely consider upgraded them to some of the named pilots then. Maybe alternatively upgrade a Tie to a Saber with PTL.

Does Opportunist on Black Squadron seem feasible if you have a higher PS stripping Focus/Evade off of the target?

It would depend on what you have doing the stripping. Relying on Howl or a normal Tie to strip the focus is pretty unreliable with 2 attack.

Opportunist works in one of two ways. One, you have nasty high level ships to set up lower ships with Opportunist who finish off the attack round. Or, you have blockers that deny movement/action and high level Opportunists to kick butt by throwing 4-5 focused dice at token-less targets. I think Imperials work best with the latter, as Academy TIEs are cheap and easy to use for blocking, setting up some Sabers or Royal Guards with Opportunist to do the blasting. Rebs with Opportunist seem to work better the other way, thanks to some nasty high-level pilots, particularly Wes Janson, leaving more vulnerable targets down the food chain (except that they lack mid- to lower-level pilots with EPT slots).

Overall, Opportunist is leaning towards "meh," since it is contingent upon other ships, and you're probably better off simply having more/better base ships in the first place.

Saber+PtL x3

Black x2

They are all 4s, the ties can be used as blockers, and you've got 5 ships to do battle with. Not my favorite 3 Interceptor build, but it works well.

I think that the list I'm currently aiming at is a 4x interceptor list.

as long as you have enough PS4+ shooters to strip tokens...

I think that the list I'm currently aiming at is a 4x interceptor list.

I've already run two such lists:

Royal+PtL x2

Saber+Opportunist x2

and

Soontir Fel+PtL+TC

Jax+PtL+Hull

Alpha x2

Both worked well, but here's the list that worked hands down the best:

Soontir+PtL+Hull+TC

Jax+PtL+Shield

Royal+PtL+Hull+Shield

Three Interceptors seem risky, but I am a huge fan of Fel, so I'll give it a shot.

But 5 TIEs just isn't really that much.

I would rather get some of the great named TIE Pilots.

Night Beast cost 1 more point than Black Squadron and he can pretty much get two actions every turn as long as he goes green (which is basically what PtL gives you). If you are flying a TIE and you do two actions, 1 of them should be focus just about every time. And Night Beast can K-turn the turn after taking his 2 actions.

then throw stealth on all of them

I'm currently 4-0 with that three Interceptor list, including 2 victories over HSF.

As someone pointed out my mistake before, there is only 11 points left, but sticking on stealth devices is still a good idea. People may go nuts if your dice are hot.
