Background sounds and music

What do you think about them?

I like various ambients, especially those from ambient-mixer.com. It's a "must have" in a setting filled with so much noise and sounds, especially if it is so easy to control. When it comes to playing music I prefer slower melodies. In computer games music always speeds up when the fight starts. I discovered that in paper RPG's that's not the best idea. That's because the action always... slows down when the fight begins. That's where soundtracks from turn-based games come with aid. What are your thoughts? Also, do you know the background melodies from any of the Total War games? Do you know any similar?

My group uses things like this all the time. It's great for helping set/keep a mood, at least for us. In particular I have this howling/static noise that is associated with the Rak'gol which is great for making them sweat.

We get good use out of a Pandora station seeded from Two Steps From Hell for combat. I also have pulled a lot of songs from game soundtracks. GOG.com is great for this; games bought there very often come with soundtracks.

I find this sort of thing extremely annoying and unnecessary. Your mileage may vary.

I know someone else had some good music recommendations on here. I think some of it was from Homeworld. For me, I have the Chaos Gate PC game sound track. :)

I'm sure they're good, but I wanted to talk generally about using sound and music in RPG's. Tips and tricks and stuff. Besides playing slower music during fights that one would choose in the first place I've got another idea, though it's not rocket science.

Theme music. On my sessions Ordo Xenos have always Deus Ex Human Revolution OST played in the background. Eastern Empire, new culture rising on the outskirts of the galaxy invented by me, has always music from the "Anastasis" album by Dead Can Dance in the background.
