Star Destroyer Model kits

By TomRK, in X-Wing

First a message to FFG: "I mean no offense with this post. You're miniatures are the best but a Star Destroyer model will probably be huge and cost more than a 2nd hand car. But if you build it, I reckon you'll need to give everyone a years notice so they can save up."

With that out the way I thought I'd take this out to the community: "Can anyone recommend a good place to find a model kit, preferably plastic, of an Imperial Star Destroyer?"

Scale I'm after is the same as Tantive IV, though I realize it might have to be a little smaller than that scale.

Biggest one I've seen so far is made of Lego. While it would be fun, and ready painted, I'd rather not go the Lego route. There's also a 1:100 and 1:12300 scale from Revell. But those sizes don't seem right.

Tread carefully my friend. The scale of an ISD model be dangerous waters on this forum (I kid guys :) ). The size of an ISD to scale with the corvette would be about 16 feet long. You may want to take a look at several high quality resin models but they are expensive and probably not more than 1.5 ft long at most.

:o

The Lego one is starting to look good

Edit: here it is....

Revell has a republic star destroyer which is about 18 inches. There are pics in the thread about its rules that i started.

I think for the most part your only real options for a ISD model kit, is going to be ebay.

The Corvette looks to be around 1/400 - 1/450 ish.

Randy Cooper does one at approximately 1/1500 (37.5"). It's expensive, resin, and a kit for expert builders.

Completely impractical for gaming use - far too big (and yet still too small, lol) and I'd guess the weight at no less than 8kg.

I still have this sitting in my closet

One of these days I'll get around to building it... One of these days...

1:100, uh huh.

That would be 16 meters long. Show me a 52.4934" model.

I'm not sure you understand how scale actually works.

Price: Ouch!

Model: Perfect! Exactly what I was thinking. Especially the size. Not too huge, but not puny little either.

Conclusion: Time to start saving. Might be able to buy in about a year. Less time if I refuse to buy any X-Wing models, or anything else hobby related, or clothes, or food, or anything else for that matter.

Cool!

These guys have some kits in their shop from time to time...

Coming from a hobby of 6mm, 10mm, 15mm, 20mm, 28mm and 35mm it is different to work out scale sometimes. But even I knew that wasn't a good idea.

Hence my "But those sizes don't seem right" comment.

If I could find a plastic 1/400 scale Star Destroyer kit I'd be a very happy man. But there doesn't seem to be any.

Couple of cool 1/350 scale ships.

Gozanti Cruiser and Consular-Class Cruiser are the two that caught my eye. Plus a 1/350 Rebel Runner....aka Tantive IV.

Great link! Thanx

It would be over 13 feet long. 4 times the length of the normal play area. At least it would feel appropriately scaled. It would require a metal sub-frame to support the weight. Probably a forklift to move it too.

And a floor covered in thick bubble wrap. And a proximity alarm fitted to me and other players for fear it gets bumped off the table and I spend the next few hours crying in the ruins of a very expensive model.

Edit: yes it would be a VERY big table......how does a continent sized gaming board sound?

SSD at 1/20000 scale.... its seems the only scale that would fit in this game :(

My dad and his buddies used to use the 1/600 scale old airfix naval models and they played on the floor of the army reserve motor pool floor. They had surveyors equipment to measure ranges.

Friend of mine has this huge collection of 3" GI Joes with every vehicle, he and some of his other buddies designed a rules system for combat, He called it floor wars. One convention in the early 90s they used an entire ballroom floor for one battle, it was epic.

I'd love nothing more that to get a kit and modify it into my own class of frigate or the like, but finding the models for decent price in the UK is bloody tough. I'm not confident enough to scratchbuild the entire thing (I'd be another unfinished project, just like my 40k scale Knight Titan) :L
