Dunwich Expansion Questions

By Torn, in Arkham Horror Second Edition

I've played a handful of games with the Dunwich expansion, and these two issues have caused confusion in almost every one.

Mi-Go Braincase: (“While in Arkham, exhaust and spend all of your movement points for the turn to swap places with another investigator or monster in Arkham.” ) The base rules state that an investigator must encounter monsters in any area he attempts to move out of. When using the Braincase, however, traditional movement is not occurring. If an investigator uses the Mi-Go Braincase to move to a new area, does he avoid encountering monsters sharing his starting location/street?

Tasks (NOT Missions): There appears to me to be a contradiction in the rulebook concerning Tasks. In the main text of the rules under the heading “Tasks and Missions,” the rules state that “merely spending an Arkham Encounter Phase in the listed areas is enough to complete each step.” This seems to indicate that simply having an encounter at a listed area is enough to fulfill that portion of the Task. However, the example box provided says that “merely being present in the location during the Upkeep Phase would [suffice]” to fulfill a Task. So which is it? If one visited the final location listed on his Task, would he receive his reward at the end of his Arkham Encounter Phase or during his following Upkeep? Additionally, what would happen if an Arkham Encounter at a listed location removed the given investigator from that location? Would he fulfill that portion of his Task by having had an encounter at the proper location, or would he have to visit the location again in hopes of staying there through an Upkeep Phase?

(In a related question, does using the special ability of a location count as having an encounter there?)

I do Task like this after the encounter you place a clue token on it.

Missions you have to be at the place during the upkeep... so hopefully the encounter doesn't throw you out into the street or drive you insane, etc

Brain Case teleport and leave the monster behind.

Yes special ability counts as a encounter.

Just as moving instantly to any spot using the Patrol Wagon still has you encounter monsters there, you will still have to encounter all remaining monsters on a location if you "brain-case" yourself there. Ideally though, you can choose a spot that has just one monster and swap with it, leaving you with 0 monsters to encounter in the new spot.

Tasks are just like missions but the sacrifice is "nothing."

So just like missions, each step of a task is completed if you're at the target location during Upkeep. If your encounter at the location boots you out, therefore, you will not be there during Upkeep so you'll have to go there again.

I ran into the exact situation you did, but it was clarified (I believe by Kevin) long ago. Sorry I can never provide links for this stuff.

Just play it like a mission with nothing to sacrifice.

Tibs,

My question actually concerned the monsters in the area you're moving from not to . However, I assume the same answer still applies: one would have to evade any monsters in his current area before he could swap out using the Brain Case.

I see, sorry. Yes, I believe that you still have to deal with monsters as a general rule.
