? vs ? let the games begin!

By TomRK, in X-Wing

Personal request here.

While mathematics and discussion are ways to compare different ships and lists, I have found myself wondering why people don't just settle things the old fashioned way.

FIGHT!

You heard me

So you want to know which is best between a A-Wing and X-Wing, or a B-Wing and E-Wing, or a Tie Advanced and Imperial Ace, or a Tie Bomber and Tie Defender. Instead of spending hours on forums discussing it, take it to the board and don't come back until you have a "best two out of three" dogfight or list to report.

That's right folks!

I challenge you to put the choices to the test by doing either:

1 on 1 dogfights

OR

100 points of one VS 100 points of the other

Best two out of three.....

GO!

I don't think anybody actually wants to know that.

Each ship in the game has a different role and a different focus, and are meant to be flown in different ways. I'm not sure there's any comparing A to B and declaring one "best," as it's a meaningless term. Best at what?

Not to mention you threw in at least one ship which hasn't been released yet, which would make that awfully difficult to pit against anything in a dogfight.

People compare.

I've read enough posts to know that everyone talks about them.

My solution is less talk, more action.

1 on 1 might be unfair to one against another, for whatever reason, which is why I suggested 100 points.

I know some of the ships are not released, and more will be announced in the future, but I mentioned what I did because I knew they would be released. Assuming this topic isn't deleted, or delegated to many pages away, this topic will still be around when they are released.

Best at what?

Answer: whatever concept of "best" each player has. For me it's blasting the enemy to smithereens while taking hits. Don't care much for agility.

If only there was a ship with plenty of hull, shields and firepower to match my needs........

Another player would run circles around my B-Wing list with their A-Wings. Whose best? Who cares, just have fun testing them out against each other.

Truth be told, using my example above, I might get my B-Wing list blasted to pieces by one A-Wing list and then I'll defeat another A-Wing list.

It's simply a bit of fun.

Or do I have the wrong hobby?

Numbers can be compared with accuracy. Playing ships against each other offers a lot of other variables which go beyond the ships used and into how they are flown and why they are used like they get used.

But by that same argument numbers don't tell the whole story of what ships are more useful. A fast agile ship used as a flanker is a better use of points than one used as a slugger, and a slow, powerful ship is better at dukeing it out then flitting around the edges.

It's true that numbers don't tell "the whole story" but if you understand what they are talking about you can know what's better at a specific thing.

I'm not sure how many of you have heard this one but " Statistics figures don't lie but liars can figure." This is to say that while the statistics on something may be "right" that doesn't always mean they are useful or even representative of what is being discussed. Example: "Traffic fatalities are up 100% along a stretch major stretch of road last year" which sounds pretty grim compared to saying "two people died on a major stretch of road compared to one the previous year" especially if it is an extremely high traffic area.

You are so silly.

Here's a match up

NEVER!!!

Ok you're probably right.

A couple months ago, we did a dogfight between soontir and tycho. We thought, "this is going to be quick." "soontir has this with his high pilot skill."

The match lasted for almost an hour. It was probably around 40 turns of evading, dodging and interceptoring. Tycho won with one hull point left and a lucky range three shot.

It was awesome.
