Dramatic FIght event , opinions?

By Atraangelis, in Game Masters

Hello,

I like cinematic battles that are not simply Die mechanic fests...

I have a player who uses a glaive...

I want to introduce a villan/nemessis who during the fight actualy grabs tha haft of the galive as it is trying to stike him invoking that .."Pucker" moment!

How best can i do this..

1. SImply have that be an event in the battle outside of die rolls?

2. Have it as a event based on a miss and uncanceled Threats.?

3 Have it as only possible ona Despair?

4. Have it as a event based on a destiny flip?

I have used in the past wepons getting shot out of players hands/or destroyed when they roll 4 or more uncanceled Threats..

So let me hear your thoughts...

5.? All of the above...........they all sound pretty reasonable to me depending on the level of certainty you want for the incident to occur.

What game effect do you want grabbing the haft (that sounds dirty) to have?

Im looking for it to be in thier first encounter, The NPC will escape but i want it to be memorable.

Possible in game effect may be to bend the haft or possibly rip it from the players grasp tossing it aside...

The glaive weilder is the partys tank and his first reaction will be to Charge with the galive, and i want the party to realize he is some what beyond them both mentaly and physicaly as a first encounter.

You could have the fight be strictly narrative, but some players might resent the fact that they can't do anything about it.

You could just have the adversary roll a brawl check and use advantage/triumph to flavor disarming the PC.

Alternatively, check out the sunder quality. While only a few melee/Brawl weapons have it, it's made entirely to destroy weapons. You don't have to destroy it, but flavor it as being flung from the PC's grasp and out side of his reach.

A despair would be a great way to have this happen on, but in my experience, Despairs are rare in combat, even with frequent use of Adversary and Destiny Points. It's possible that a despair wouldn't come up at all.

If it's something that needs to happen, find a firm but fair way of handling it. Perhaps have the nemesis use only stun damage, and when the PC's Strain exceeds his or her strain threshold, then switch to the narrative of "Gronk grabs the haft of your glaive and casually flings it far outside your reach. He stairs into your eyes as you slowly slip from consciousness. The echos of his laughter are the last thing you hear before your mind slips into the aether."
