Dice Tower Showdown: X-Wing vs Star Trek Attack Wing podcast is now live

I have both and play both. I think that x-wing is a better tournament game because of the balance between factions, but I enjoy the scenarios in star trek better. That said I hope both games survive and grow to overcome any imbalance that people think they have.

I hope that is something we all agree on.

X-wing already has. The balance is there. The sheer variety of winning squads in the store championship thread is such an improvement from Regionals last year. And I think it will remain this balance, despite the Transport and Rebel Aces fear.

I agree. Plus who wants to play with Romulans and Federation ships in the same group? Not me. It just isn't right.

It happens enough in the shows that I can see why it's allowed. But it happens seldom enough that IMO it shouldn't be allowed.

Worse though IMO is the fact that you can put Kirk on a TNG era Romulan ship.

I wish we had pilots we could bounce between Ships. I understand why we don't, as it creates some broken things.(Vader in not an Advanced.) But I do feel X-wing would be a more fun game to squad build for if I had to debate whether to put Tycho in a B-wing or an X-wing and could put Ibtisam in an A-wing.(So much amazing.)

I wish we had pilots we could bounce between Ships.

It would make squad building more interesting that's for sure. Have pilots of X cost, and a ship of Y cost. Add the two together and come up with the final cost.

So a stock X-Wing is 10 points, a Rookie is 11, and Wedge is 19, a A-Wing is 7... The only issue with it, the chance of broken combo's is pretty big.

Because the game isn't designed or tested with portable pilots in mind, there are a few combinations that just don't work (Tycho in a B-wing), as well as a lot of combinations that, as you say, are just too good to be legal (Biggs in the Falcon).

...also Vader in an Interceptor, Howlrunner in a Lambda (for the extra protection), Maarek in a Firespray, Krassis in a Bomber, Horton in a B-wing (HLC), Lando in an A-wing or X-wing with an R2, Tycho + PTL in a YT-1300...

And I did say I understand why we don't. I just think the game could have been more fun to build for from the start if it had been designed that way.

To be fair, Star Trek cap ship fights aren't the same as Star Wars cap ship fights. In Star Wars it's a very WWII navy feel, in Star Trek it's completely different with a fair amount of moving around and trying to find angles to shoot from.

A Fed ship vs a Klingon Bird of Prey don't just sit still and pound the crap out of each other firing broadsides. I don't think the flight path system we use for fighters would work for a Star Wars cap ship game, but it does work fairly well for Star Trek.

Roddenberry always said Trek was Horatio Hornblower in space, so it seems like Attack Wing would need something that more closely resembles Sails of Glory than X-Wing.

He also said it was Wagon train in space....

Roddenberry actually had very little to do with Star Trek when you look at how much is out there. He only was involved in the first 2 seasons of TOS and the first season of TNG. 20+ seasons between TNG, DS9 and VOY didn't involve him.

Look at the fights in the latter part of TNG, all of DS9 and Voy and you'll see that they have pretty much nothing in common with wet navy fights. Just look at the fight between Kirk and Khan in ST2...

His pattern indicates two-dimensional thinking.

Who Khan? Because part of the reason why Kirk won was because he used the Z axis in the fight.

I still laugh every time I watch that scene.

I do like Khan's upgrade card in Attack Wing: Superior Intellect allows him to steal any upgrade from an enemy ship.
