What's Next for RT?

By RogalDorn01, in Rogue Trader

Just thought it would be fun to see what sort of ideas (Wild Speculation) people expect to see from FFG in the future. I really liked faith and Coin and I can't wait to see whats coming next, but if I had to venture a guess. I think we are due for a Ad Mech themed book about explorators and expanding on all the cool endeavors surrounding the exploitation of worlds...

What do you guys think?

Funnily enough...

I've been wondering about this for a while as well. And AdMech would be my guess. The reason for me is that it makes sense book wise, but also in the past where GW have been coming out with an army that is linked to a FFG 40k book, the FFG book has been delayed.

Like the Demonhunters book which had all the new Grey Knights stuff in it.

Rumour has it there is an AdMech army list coming for either 40k or 30k - and I wonder if this is why we have heard nothing.

There is definitely an AdMech list coming through forge world. They keep putting out models for it. That is interesting that there would be a connection between them as far as the legal requirements are set. It seems to me that FFG puts out a supplement every six months roughly?

Normally every 3 to 6 months I think. But it seems unusual to have gone for so long and not had any hint as to whats coming next. Saying that the new books for Black Crusade and Only War seemed to be a lot further apart than normal releases.

It would be nice to know that the franchise is still alive!

I think they are focusing more on SW rpg, and DH 2.0, while slowing down with 40k rpg. I think they will continue with some expansions to OW & BC (maybe one more to BC for Chaos Undivided, and another for OW - perhaps some expanded armoured warfare with flyers), and discontinue RT and DW.

I think, What Rouge Trader is missing, is a sourcebook detailing ship life.

- List of important NPC from the characters ship.

- A sample crew for a player spaceship detailing the different "tribes" or families running the different departments of a ship.

- Some scenarios and plot ideas for action inside the player ship. Could be mutiny, xenos infiltration, chaos, heretics, etc.

- An idea or two for long running plot running in the background of an entire campaign.

- Flavor stuff. “Something funny happened on my way to the bridge”

If by "discontinue" you mean 2.0, then I agree with you. Heck, they might actually combine RT into DH 2.0 at a way later date, since they are already trying to combine all the rules and make it more streamlined. I heard in DH 2.0 they don't have Thrones any more, just something similar to Profit and Influence. Which is exactly what RT utilizes.

So in retrospect I'm thinking RT, DW, BC, and OW will be Expansions/Source Books to DH. Kinda like how they had Rifts, then Phaseworld, etc etc. Just my 2 cents though.

Anyhoot, I also think the next book for RT would be an Ad-Mech book. Or at the least a book that has a lot of Ad-Mech info in it, like maybe a half-adventure half source book.

Oh Dang I really like that idea! I know there wouldn't really be any PF in it so far, but I always thought that a few ship based encounters or endeavors would be fun. But yeah they would need to flesh it out a LOT more.

I certainly hope RT isn't dead, but I have bought every book so that will continue as long as they keep putting it out. Interesting notion though, so 2.0 would essentially just be called Warhammer 40k Roleplay, then there would be source books for the various things. This is very similar to what World Of Darkness does with respect to Vampire: Requiem, and all the wolf and mage stuff. Very interesting notion...

Would not mind something along the lines of " battle fleet kronos 2" to be honest...including the two posts above, rules or at least fluff for larger space structures ( I know in the expanse there are not many, but would be cool to see how the defenses for say Calith are set up), and since they mention the warp gate in RT maybe some rules for Tau, Tyranid, and Necron ships. And of course a good amount of new ship hulls and weapons

... Warhammer 40k Roleplay...

LOL I totally was thinking it would be called that. But alas, it would be a bit cliché. And it doesn't appear very catchy to me. No idea what it would be called though. 41st Millennium , Imperium of Man, Dark Heresy .....?

I suppose its possible we'll see another sourcebook or two for Rogue Trader, but I sincerely doubt it. We have everything we "need" for the game (Faith and Coin was totally unnecessary), and the only things that could come are just "extras."

Honestly, I'm just waiting for RT 2ed to bring this system in line with the more recent FFG systems - i.e. no Rank structure, cleaner rules. Yes, I know we're YEARS from that happening, if it even ever does, but that doesn't stop me from wanting it... and seeing it as "needed."

That's a good point Traejun. I really did like Faith and Coin, but it certainly wasn't on the level with some of the other sourcebooks. I just buy them all as they come out...

They could call a new Edition "Galaxy In Flames" if they were just going to do an overall campaign setting.

Precisely re Faith and Coin. It was cool and had some nice flavor in it, but it wasn't a shred as useful (to me, anyway) as most of the other RT sourcebooks.

I love RT. It's far and away, my favorite 40K system. Does it need some updating? Sure, it does. The thing is, that updating isn't really necessary because I love the system as is. That's sort of the difference between RT and DH. The latter NEEDED to be updated. The former doesn't, for the most part.

RT 2ed. New "expanse." Free form advancement system - i.e. no ranks. I'd love it. I don't need it.

Game companies rarely stop producing material just because they have covered the necessities - they keep producing stuff as long as it is profitable to do so. Sometimes that's a good thing (cool new details on underdeveloped aspects of a setting), sometimes not ("We need to fill pages, so just grind out crap! We can't afford to worry about things like 'game balance' anymore- there's a Shareholder meeting coming up!").

I just hope, that before they discontinue 1.0 lines, they will release erratas to those systems. RT is the most up to date system from "old line", whilst last errata to DW was 3 years ago...

I think, that before I jump to 2.0, I will exploit 1.0 as much as I can. Its still good ol warhammer, and now, look what are they doing to WFB, and WH40k. Astra militarium, Militarium tempestus...

So before I transition to 2.0, I have to play one more DH campaign, one DW and one epic combined high level imba ascension-deathwatch-cheesyness. Killing hordes of greater deamons etc.

I disagree with the idea that most of the major areas have been covered. Theres still huge area to be covered - more detail on the Trade part of RT, possibly with more civilian ships. An AdMech book, Something allowing for Eldar player Characters, something covering the higher levels of play, etc.

I'm hoping it's either all the changes in 40k by GW putting books on hold or that FFG have just overstretched themselves.

I totally agree with you on the business side of things. I don't know how well Faith and Coin sold in comparison to previous RT sourcebook... or even other systems' materials. I assume it met or got close to expectations only because FFG likely knows pretty well what to expect.

At the same time, I don't believe FFG is feeling the need to simply pump out material for any one system because they have a man other systems to service.

For me, the issue here is: "what else is needed?" Or, perhaps, what else would be helpful enough to warrant the development time, investment and our money?

In my mind, RT doesn't need anything else. In fact, I don't even believe anything else would be helpful enough to warrant spending my money. A Mechanicus book? Meh. More ships? I'd love it, but what we have is plenty. Even then, would there be a whole book devoted to new ship classes that don't exist anywhere else in the lore? Yeah, unlikely.

All in all, I'd rather they spend time working on a new/updated edition than releasing marginally useful sourcebooks.

RT would benefit more from patching than updating at this point, but screw it just house rule whatever isn't working because I'm guessing there isn't going to be much more errata regardless of whether we need it.

I'm still waiting for a section on selling ships.

Man, I just want more ships at this point. Battleships would be great, some more diversity and of course more xenos empires and their ships as well.

I'm right there with you. Battleships would be interesting, at least, and I'd be interested to see at least a treatment of Yu'vath and Egarian ships. Rak'gol are a continuing threat in my campaign so I wouldn't mind seeing some larger ships for them without having to eyeball them myself. I also agree with the person who mentioned earlier that they would like to see stations expanded and better defined. An expanded bestiary would be interesting to me too, with things like Hrud, Tarellians, etc.

All in all, though, I doubt we'll see any further books.

Agreed. Stations would be awesome.

Oh yeah, stations would totally rock! We have a huge trading station on the very edge of things where different races trade and we take a cut of it. Plus it gives us a great platform to expand our cold trade network. The whole thing is built with human tech, but now it's all kitted out with Tau weaponry (we let them build a mission there to spread their vile message of the "greater good") I would love to explore more in this concept.

Wasn't MY call...I'm just the innocent Ferengi that brokered the deal! Lord Captain said "I'm bored, I want railguns and battlesuits to guard that busted up space station we just conquered..."
