A-Wing vs. X-Wing

By Bjorn Rockfist, in X-Wing

So with the Rebel Aces slated for Q3 of this year here is a link to what I feel shows how A-Wings will become a staple in Rebel lists. With the setup I have shown the most you could get of each in 100 points is 4. Even RSPs only get you a 4 PS. For 24 points.....1 more than a RSP you get a PS 5, with just 1 less attack die, the ability to Boost, the ability to Evade, and can preform 2 actions a turn, at the cost of gaining a stress. Not to mention a much more agile dial. I can't wait to make A-Wings a go to ship for my Rebel lists.

Green Squadron Pilot + A-Wing Test Pilot + Chardaan Refit + PtL + VI + Hull Upgrade (24 Points)

Red Squadron Pilot + nothing (23 points)

Rookie Pilot + nothing (21 points)

Green Squadron Pilot + A-Wing Test Pilot + Chardaan Refit + PtL + VI + Hull Upgrade (24 Points)

Red Squadron Pilot + nothing (23 points)

The extra PS costs 1 point so that is fair.

X-Wing has better attack and worse agility. Attack dice are worth more than defense dice. And it has open torpedo and astromech slots.

A-Wing gets a 2nd action and a good number of green maneuvers. Plus boost+evade.

The A-Wing will need TL+focus to come close to the damage output of an X-Wing. So the option to boost or evade comes at a price: Less damage output. And PTL limits the A-Wing to 8 maneuvers while the X-Wing still has 15.

Correct. The A-Wing will become a much more used hit and run...not jousting ship. I think 2 GSP with 2 B-Wings turned into Buzzsaws will make for a rather nasty 4 Rebel ship list. 2 that are hard to hit and will bite your ankles and 2 that will always keep TL and never fail to damage when the fire....yeah!

What I am looking to try is

Green + PTL + Expose + refit + title

which is 24 points.

If you have a shot you can turn into an x-wing with 3 attack 2 agility and focus, taking a stress. If you don't then you can turtle with focus and evade.

Putting in opportunist in there also works, and you would still get 3 attack with focus (just can't PTL this turn)

Opp doesn't work that well since you have to decide at PS3 whether or not you'll have a shot and therefore want to PTL or not. Unless you had a wingman pulling the stress (aka, another GSP w/ PTL + Wingman).

Actually, the 15 point PS1 A wing will be one of the most cost efficient jousting ships in the game! Slightly better than a B wing, in fact, and certainly better than an X-wing. About the same as a TIE Fighter without Howlrunner support.

Will it get used that way? Who knows. But its a great cheap blocker, so why not? It forces painful choices from your opponent: do you shoot the high ability tank a wing in front, or the 3 attack dice x wings and b wings that are behind it?

I personally love the A Wing for a couple reasons:

1. Can run around with Ties and not get left in the dust

2. Evade dice are nice

3. Low cost pilots that provide plenty of specializing without fear of going past the points cap (elite pilot skill, missiles, and now the aces mods oh my!)

4.My avatar is an A Wing, what do you expect me to say lol

Overall I haven't touched an X Wing since the A's came out and now with the B's, they provide a nice hammer and anvil combination

Well you could always bank on getting a shot after the focus is gone, or vs a stressed ship or if you think someone is going to Kturn (without adv sensors), I agree PS3 is a bit early to have to decide that, taking expose is a lot more reliable.

The word you are looking for is better... it is better than the academy tie fighter. For the cost of a hull upgrade you change 2 hulls to shield, you get a better dial and better actions. If I offered you that for an academy tie you would take it 90+ percent of the time.

The Xwing has one really big thing over an A wing. It can go 1 forwards. That is the most important move in the game. Hands down.(followed by hard 1's.) I would rather have an X wing than what you listed. But I would rather field a Reduced cost GS with juat PTL than a an X-wing. Adding points doesn't always help as much as the bare minimum.

I already have a lot of success with GSP A-Wing+Opportunist, they are just nasty. I can't wait to be able to reduce their cost by 2 and give them a second EPS.

I like the A's as part of a mixed fleet. I really think rebels are best played by mixing and matching. A list below I'd like to try:

The Rebellion Sampler

Dagger bwing + Advanced Sensor = The Muscle

Grey ywing + Ion = The Controller

Green awing + PTL + Refit = The Flanker

Rookie xwing + R2D2 = The Closer

3 points left over. Add a hull upgrade somewhere? Switch grey to Dutch? Switch rookie to red?

I'm sure someone has played this before. Thoughts?

About equivalent in jousting, so yes better once you consider the dial. The math in my Lanchester's thread basically says that the jousting efficiency of an A-wing is 98.8% relative to a TIE Fighter, so they're basically the same.... but the A-wing dial is better.

On the other hand, the TIE Fighter efficiency goes up to 117% when it is supported by Howlrunner. Even if I could field A-wings as the Empire, I would still probably stick with TIE Fighters so I could get 7 ships, and then upgrade a couple into A-wings with whatever points were left.
