When fighting the Lord of Darkness it says only Characters may attack the Lord of Darkness. Followers,Spells or Objects can not fight in a Characters place. What does this mean in game terms, ie can you still pay 1G to the Mercenary to add his Strength to yours & other similar occurancies.

Of course, You can. That words in Rules means that You cannot cast for example Summon Phoenix Spell from the Reaper Expansion Set, because Phoenix will be fighting against LoD instead of You.

Followers, 2nd ed had (maybe it'll be yet added) Champion, who could fight instead of the character in either (current terms) battle or psychic combat. As for Spells, Reaper added those Summon Spells, ranging from Str 3-5 and Craft 3-5, which wouldn't do much against the LoD, but would prevent the loss of life. Objects, no such yet, I'm thinking a Dancing Sword or something, just from the RPG POV.

For now, these are the only cards covered by this rule. All Followers that ADD something to the Character attack value can be used, including Raised Corpses, Animal Followers and Dominated Monsters.
By the way, if you can move back and forth, you'd better don't land on the Lord of Darkness if you don't have a little chance to win.
I was also wondering about this rule.
Instead of a character...( that would be indeed summon spells(phoenix etc)
How can a object fight the LOD( instead of a character?)
Maybe for future expansions? or maybe in the dungeon deck itself?

Yes, because you get outside of the Dungeon without the Treasure.

That's right, but if you have enough lives, you want to stay longer in the dungeon. Maybe you can better choose for the way back then
Depends how difficult it is, otherwise you can try to lose from LOD and get the hell out of there ( as you said)
lf you are turned into a Toad does that count as a Character?
