Good Horton Builds

By Revanchist, in X-Wing

What about Horton with:

-R2-D6

-Marksmanship

-BTL-A4

-Twin Laser Turret

This will let you reroll blanks and makes all of your focus results hits and one of them a crit. Thoughts?

Awful lot of points for a ship with no defenses.

Poe Dameron (38)

T-70 X-Wing (31), Lone Wolf (2), R5-P9 (3); Autothrusters (2)

Horton Salm (31)

Y-Wing (25), Twin Laser Turret (6)

“Dutch” Vander (31)

Y-Wing (23), R2-D6 (1), Twin Laser Turret (6), Veteran Instincts (1)

All at PS 8 ...

okay, we're going to invent a new term for X-wing thread necro:

this thread's been

(also don't go nuts on Horton. Dude's a Y-wing with no extra defenses, so at most just toss him a tlt bone and r4-d6 to keep those nasty hlcs off him; Horton won't care as much about stress because ability)

Yeah I was wondering why we don't just slap TLTs on him and call it a day, otherwise he seems way too 'spensive for how squishy he is, right?

I'd say so

if you venture too close to the mid 30s, you're getting into "well, at this point he might as well be C3po Miranda!" territory

horton's an accurate sniper, but Miranda is a ******* monster who will win games by herself

The first page of this thread is so cute.

hindsight's a *****, ain't it?

I like him with Ions and Flechettes

Ye gods

I'm trying him right now in that build.

Plus BTL-A4.

Plus Engine Upgrade. (Total contra-synergy there.)

Or at least I was. He got to shoot his combo once.

Is good ol' General Salm worth it with just EM & a Proton Torp at 31 pts? I don't have any TLT's yet and I can't justify any of the other turrets because they aren't optimal with his ability.

I love the idea. I so want to have that perfect Y-wing squad swoop in on the flank of the Imperial Raider and unleash two consecutive volleys of Proton Torpedos. But if that's all Horton's got in a standard game, I'd at least give him Failsafe. Autoblaster Turret is so cheap, it provides a few more rounds of combat potency after the alpha strike has passed and the furball ensues.

Horton is a bit of a Glass cannon in this meta. Now I know what you are saying, how can a ship with 8 hit points be considered a Glass cannon. Okay maybe no a glass cannon but more squishy than you think.

First of all take a look at other unique pilots for small ships in the meta. You have Soontir Fel, Corran Horn, Whisper, and maybe Darth Vader if not than Juno Eclipse. With those ships there is re-positioning that moves ships out of firing arc, but even if there wasn't they all have 3 agility dice with hard mitigation. Soontir can get double focus and autothrusters, Corran can regain a shield with each green maneuver, Whisper can reposition the most and gets focus after it attacks. All that bring in rather hard damage mitigation that negates attacks all together.

Horton has none of that, the Y-wing dial is rather restrictive unless you use the (salvaged)astromech slot to open it up and 1 agility means jut about every hit Horton will take. Not to mention he only has 38% shielding which means most crits will be taken. Horton can take some serious firepower but it won't stop him from being focused down.

That's another reason why I don't want to put a turret on him(Edit: on the EM + Torp build): less points to lose when he inevitably goes down.

Someone made this point earlier (in 2014): With Salm's ability and Proton Torps built-in minifocus, he's not really gonna miss. Horton does have more options, though. He's really good at making sure both hits of TLT get through without any actions thereby making R3-A2 a good option. You can deal more damage and more stress w/ BTL-A4 if you think you can handle the title's limitation. Double/triple stress often hurts your opponent's damage output and that kinda makes Horton a little more durable.

and this is exactly what I mean by "might as well be Miranda" territory :P

Idk, I have pretty good results with tlt, marksmanship on Horton. Just back him up with standard Biggs and Blount with assault missiles and deadeye.

So does her ability apply to BOTH attacks if you give her TLT?

Once per round = once per round

2 shield regen per turn would be obscene :o

Edited by ficklegreendice

No doubt! But does the modifier apply to both attacks? If you take the shield regen, do you just roll two dice for each of your TLT attacks? Since TLT says "perform this attack twice..."

Should've been more specific, sorry...

Edited by FuturistiKen

Once per round is once per round still :P

Attack twice

Mod once

Wow...that's like, just not that big a penalty at all for the shield regen, if you're using TLT. That's cray-cray...

Horton, TLT, EU is better than R2D2.

Arc dodging is better than regenning shields here. It's a PS8 pilot after all that can make good use of movement. He can avoid people getting to range 1 this way, and has Rerolls for his TLT attacks. If you want to invest a point more, give him R2 or R5.

Yes she is

She wins games by herself

She is the closest thing to a 38 point, small base fat han

And she is why you don't take Horton up to 35 points unless you already have her in the squad :P

Hmmm I'll have to give EU a shot. Good idea.
