Trex' E-mail Account and Bounty Hunter News Letter....

By aballantine, in Game Masters

Stumbled upon a concept to help my team of adventurers get pointed in directions, yet give them enough control to select what they would like to do....

After they stole the Krayt Fang, they have hacked into Trex' e-mail account. Have started up a few e-mail exchanges impersonating him -- and also reading his latest copy of "Bounty Hunter Newsletter" and ponding which things to take on.

Yup, a little bit simplistic - but working well for our younger player (8 years old) and has added a great deal of spice to the discussions.

What's amazing is how quickly this has linked the Star Wars universe with our own. Ideas quickly flowing of would Trex figure this out? Why would he, why wouldn't he? Is everything done by hologram video? Or are some things done in text (as R2D2 would transmit)? How would you impersonate somebody....

By the way, really find that Star Wars Atlas useful. Working on adventure concepts which were suggested in some of the FFG books. The info on Bespin in there is very helpful.

obviously he didn't leave any type of security or encryption. You think people would learn

But the obvious I think is Holocoms are STRICTLY for use only by Imperials. Everyone else pretty much has to resort to comlinks to communicate, you might be able to communicate via the Holonet, but it is severely restricted, monitored, and limited during the "age of rebellion". Most are limited to local Holonets for information gathering.

If it's working for you, keep going with it.

Technically, if it's an account that can be logged into from any computer (like gmail) Trex would have been able to get in and change his passwords or something. Even if it's a more "secure" network or Guild VPN, he would eventually be able to contact the server and have it reset. Then again, he might have logged in and noticed the players' use and he's using that to track them so he can make an attempt at getting his ship back.

It could be that they are able to use it for a while, because the recognition key is hard wired into the Fang, so he would need to report to the Guild HQ in person to prove his identity and have the account re-set, and until then, the PCs are basically benefiting from having a stolen ID.

Although, this can still be foiled if, say, a client they are emailing asks a casual question, like "how are the wife and kids?" which is actually a coded exchange that they don't know the proper response to.

It's also up to the person doing the hiring. If it's a highly clandestine mission, the contact would not give details over an email, but would use that to set up a meet.
