Engine Glow for ships

By fano78, in X-Wing

I want to put a little more detail on my ships and wanted to get some solid answers on the engine glow.

I've seen pictures online and see variations on the engine glow. Anyone know for certain the correct colors:

X-wing:

* Back - Red (also seen blue)

A-wing:

* Back - Green? Yellow? White?

B-wing:

* Back - Red (haven't seen any other color)

* Front - Green? (I've seen front lights on B-wings)

Y-Wing:

* Back - Green? Yellow? White?

Millennium Falcon:

* Back - Blue?

* Front - White?

HWK-290:

* Back - Blue?

Any help would be appreciated.

THanks!!!

Just watch a clip of the attack on the Death Star from SW IV/ANH and the engine glows are not always consistent. For example, as the X-wings do a fly-by, their engine glow is bluish-white in the close-up but reddish-orange in more distant shots, as are the Y-wings.

A really easy thing that worked well for my x-wings and b-wings is to put white paint in the inside of the engines, then when that's dry, add a translucent red paint. Tamiya clear red. It's actually easier to do with a toothpick than a brush.

This is exactly how I do mine, additionally I have translucent blue and yellow as well to paint up the astromech units on the top as they are simple silver with no detail out of the box

Yeah, a little dab of paint on top of the R2 units helps, and with a little copper paint you can do a couple on the y-wings. The same engine method doesn't look as good for them, but it's ok. It's all simple stuff that doesn't risk really screwing anything up. My HWK engines didn't look so good though.

X-wing, Y-wing and B-wing all very similar. I've done mine with a crimson red base then orange/yellow or white spot in the center. Penguin's technique is spot on for that.

For the A-wing the Prototype Pilot card is a good reference. Pale yellow with white center.

Falcon and HWK-290 pale sky blue base and highlight with white so it leaves just a hint of blue showing round the edges (see the Jan Ors card). Gloss varnish to finish to make them pop. Dead easy to do and the improvements are instant.

For headlights you can try gloss white or silver. If you want to photograph them, one trick is to find some reflective self adhesive tape and cut a tiny square for each headlight. When you take a flash photo - Boom! Instant working headlights, no batteries required.

that's really nice. thanks for sharing.

to be honest, i think the blue glows suit starfighters the best

red glow gives it the illusion of some kind of burning fossil fuel (fire) where as blue glow gives the illusion of something far more advanced like some kind of cold fusion or something

white glow? also pretty good and that would probably be my secondary choice.. but how do you paint that and make it look good?

What about orange? (Think Slave-I)

Does Citadel make translucent paints? Im new to this. Would that be what they call a wash?

Thanks all
