1st tournament, need help.

By joey goldcoast, in X-Wing

Hi guys.

I've generally only played x-wing for the enjoyment and not really very competitively at all so have no clue on what to take in my 1st tournament. I've got an idea of what I'd like to take but would like some advise from those of you who know your x from your y better than I.

I want to take rebel scum that's for sure and what I have in my sig is what I've got. I was thinking XXYY or XXBB but what upgrades etc. I don't expect to do well as it's the 1st time I've played to win and I usually just enjoy playing the game win or lose. But obviously this is to win if possible.

Thanks forum dudes in advance. I'm sure your knowledge will help me immensely. :)

A very solid fun build is Han Shoots First. It generally has a Han Solo flow YT-1300 with marksmanship and Gunner, 2 X-Wing built to fill points.

Well, a fun rebel list, that gave me a third place at the local Store Championship is this:

2x Gold Squadron Y-wings with Ion Cannon Turrets

1 Blue Squadron B-wing with Adv. Sensors and Ion cannon

1 Blue Squadron B-wing with Adv. Sensors

It ends up at 99 points, so you often have initiative.. And its a blast to ionize people around the board :)

The problem with most XXBB Builds (or most builds with 2 B's in them in general) is that they take two advanced sensors, and you only have one, as it comes in the shuttle, e.g.

Bloody Daggers

Dagger with adv Sensors

Red squadron

Biggs Walks the Dogs

Thankfully E-wings will also come with advanced sensors, so this will be less of a problem in the future.

What you do have the upgrades for is

Blue Thunder

Blue with Heavy laser cannon

There is some discussion about it at

http://teamcovenant.com/theorist/2013/11/07/the-predatory-squad/

Basically it is a very hard hitting squad, and the other squads were something of a reaction to it.

Han Shoots first is also a solid build, as stated above. He did leave out the chewbacca crew though it is actually

Han solo + Marksmanship + Gunner + Chewbacca

A rebel swarm (5 ship list) you do have the ships for is

BXXAA all lowest skill pilots with R2 units on the Xwings.

http://xwing-builder.co.uk/view/26415/rebel-swarm

You could even swap an X for a B and go BBXAA which I think I like better, again with an R2 unit on the X as the only upgrade.

There is also BBBAA which I like as well, but of course takes 3 B-Wings so is out. BBXAA should play similarly though.

Swarms are more forgiving of mistakes as losing a ship is less of a problem and have good firepower if everyone uses focus.

The idea is the A's zip around being annoying, and getting in the way to deny actions when opposing ships hit them, and the BBX is the main firepower.

I am not that up on interceptor lists, but those could be fun too. Does depend a bit if you have the imperial aces pack or two interceptor expansions as they have different named pilots. Interceptors are really bad if you hit things though 3 green dice without focus or evade and only 3 hull for an expensive ship can be a problem.

My suggestion would be to try a few out on VASSAL and see what you like. Five ships is a LOT more effective than I was expecting.

There is also the 5 ship YYXXB. The Y's are fodder to run up the middle first and take hits, the X's follow dealing out some damage and the B is the last with sniper shooting on damaged ships. It has actually done well on the tournament scene.

you fly it in this formation:

Y Y

X X

B

This list takes a bit more knowledge on how the ships fly so lets put a peg in it and use it at a later time.

For you I would go the YT-1300 with:

Hansolo 46

Garven Dries 26

Dutch with ion turret 28

100 points.

Another swarm which gives you a nice mix of ships is

A-Wing Proto

A-Wing Proto

B-Wing Blue

Y-Wing Gold +Ion Cannon

There really are so many fun lists to try, FFG did a great job with the points costs to keep everything open.

Thanks guys, I'm going with the Blue Thunder option, it sounded too cool to not to try. I may crash and fail, but it's all a learning curve and I'm still going to have fun :)

Good luck with it.

The idea is to try to get shots in at R3 with the blues as much as possible. HLC is a secondary weapon, so your opponent does not get the extra green dice when defending, but you DO. i.e. at R3 vs an x-wing he attacks 3v2 and you attack 4v2 and have more shields. Barring horrendous dice that can only end one way.

Of course your opponent should know this and try to close quickly.

Try and get in a game or two with it if you can before the event as it will help a lot if you can play the list a few times beforehand. Out of curiousity is this an event in Gold Coast, Queensland?
