Your thoughts on Lieutenant Packs

By Comodin, in Descent: Journeys in the Dark

I am thinking of buying the 6 Lieutenant Packs that are used in the original campaign.

It seems a bit odd and takes a way the whole feel of the game if you face a cardboard token instead of a detailed miniature when you encounter a lieutenant.

But since they are quite expensive(especially here in Sweden) I was wondering if you think they add enough to the game to be worth it? And I am also wondering the following.

1. Will each boss only show up in one Quest only during the entire game(including all expansions) or will you face them more then once?

2. Is there a difference on how the boss "work" if you have the Lieutenent Pack compared to if you don't?

Anything else you want to add feel free =)

1.) Typically, a particular lieutenant shows up in one to two quests per act. Most of them are fought more than once per quest, though.

2.) There isn't a difference on how the lieutenant works. However, the packs do incorporate Agents, which are very similar to lieutenants. The packs come with Plot cards which includes the Agent card, allowing you to purchase it for a certain number of threat (acquired through the campaign process like experience). You can use the Agents in any quest if you have enough threat, and they're usually less powerful than the lieutenant counterpart. The only one of the six base game LTs you can't use in any quest is Baron Zachareth. Keep in mind each Lieutenant has their own plot deck, so if you select Belthir's, you can only use his plot cards.

The Lieutenant Packs do offer quite a bit extra IMO, plus the miniature is worth it alone. If you have a favorite lieutenant, it's a good way to bring the flavor of that character to the overall campaign with the plot deck. I recommend buying a few and seeing if you like them before making the plunge to buy all six. :)

1. Will each boss only show up in one Quest only during the entire game(including all expansions) or will you face them more then once?

I believe each LT appears (as an LT) in two quests within the Shadow Rune campaign. (Speaking only of the core box here.)

However, I know at least Splig has reappeared in Labyrinth of Ruin once, and its certainly possible that other core box LTs will make reappearances in future expansions. I'm guessing Zachareth won't, but the others are fair game.

That, of course, is only using the figure as an LT. There's also the whole Agent application from the LT packs to ensure any particular figure can see regular use on the table.

PS: Expansion LTs definitely won't make reappearances in future expansions, unless FFG decides to "reuse" one of them and include a new token and everything.

2. Is there a difference on how the boss "work" if you have the Lieutenent Pack compared to if you don't?

With the LT packs you have the option of summoning the figure as an "Agent" into any quest that does not already include the LT as an LT. "Agents" are very similar to "LTs" with a couple of differences. For one thing, Agents can't wield relics. I think Agents also count as master monsters, where LTs are just monsters - not master or minion, just monsters.

I'm considering buying the 3 Farrows, just because they've been such a large part of the Terrinoth world for a long time now. I'm sure they will continue to be so in future. I'm also tempted by Raythen and Serena just because they can also be used as heroes.

However, I don't think I'll be buying all of them. I'd love to have figures for all the LTs, but there are just too many of them coming out with each new expansion to keep up. Even if I could afford them all, I'd never be able to remember their plot decks well enough to make educated decisions when picking one to use. So I'd probably end up just using two or three faves all the time while the rest are relegated to LT-only use, and that seems like a waste in its own right.

I've got shadow of nerekhall, and I'm disapointed because no Farrow members appears at all during the campaign, only the olliven "familly"

You made it a lot easier for me so I'm gonna go ahead and buy some =) You can never get enough minis right ;)

The agent rules seems like a nice addition to the game so you can reuse the LTs.

Thanks for your thoughts and explaining how the LTs work.

Incorrect, in the shadow rune campaign splig appears in 3 quests, Alric in 5, Merick in 4, Eliza in 4, Belthir in 5, and Zachy in 4.

In Labyrinth of ruin, Splig appears in 7 quests, Merick in 5, Alric in 1, Ariad in 7, and Serena/Raythen are barfy.

I have almost all the talisman expansions and use a few of those miniatures in descent.

I think the packs with the older miniatures are a bit overpriced since they use plastic versions of the old metal lieutenant models which frankly aren't very good. The newer models that are completely new however look pretty good.

except for Rylan Olliven who is ugly, as much as farrow familiy, if not more !

Eliza Farrow is a fox!!! I'd let her suck my blood any day!!

This depends largely on how you interpret how often they appear.

Many of the repeat performances are mutually exclusive. In the Shadow Rune Campaign for example, even though Sir Alric Farrow appears in both "The Dawnblade" and "The Desecrated Tomb", you're only ever going to play one of those in a given play-through of the campaign. The Finale often features multiple Lieutenants, though.

Yes, you are correct. If I wanted to waste time i would walk upstairs and flip through the quest guide to see how many times in the 9 quests you could use any given lieutenant, but I'm lazy.

I am honestly curious and not trying to be flippant: So did you know off the top of your head how many times each lieutenant was in a quest without flipping through the quest guides?

Thanks for the info guys, bottom line seems like that they are well worth getting =) I went all in and ordered the first 8 Lieutenants :P

Yes.

Overall i have to say that i feel the LT packs are overpriced, regardless of the versatility that the plot decks offer (and they can offer a lot), but that i just really really hate the tokens for LT's.

Personal opinion and purely aesthetic i know but that's just the way it is for me.

In all honesty i would go online and find the details of the plot decks and pick based on effect and play style if you want to add some flexibility to your play (Eliza Farrows healing abilities are a favorite of mine) and buy soley on that unless like me you want to have a figure for each LT.

At the cost for maybe up to 3 packs you can get a different spin on your campaign and give yourself access to new tactics but for the whole set it starts getting stupid pricey.

Got all of the 6 Guys and I have to say that Ariad (spiderform), Valyndra and Raythen are one of the best looking models in the game. I don't like to play with papertoken as my Agends. I've baned all papertokes the familars of the heroes are models too (Ferret, Falcon, Apetrap ect, ect)

The Plot decks + marker are fine and a nice bonus and give you the chance to get some of the Lieutenants as Agends and the heroes have to handle with it.

And if you got all of them you could play evertime another plot deck. Can't wait to get the new ones from Nerekhall, but no one got them in Austria and SoN isn't available in Austria eigther. As a collector I'm used to buy them xD I remember how it was in ED1...never got the Lieutenants for seas of blood...If somebody think the are overpriced should go and buy some models from Games Workshop or Warmachine xD
