I, like a few others here, was fortunate to be part of the Beta Team for the initial launch of X-wing. When Mr. Petersen said that "X-wing is the most sucessful game we've [FFG] ever had.", it gave me that special feeling of being part of something bigger than myself (. . . that warm, fuzzy feeling; if you will).
XWMG Most Successful Game We've Ever Had

Thank you Steve for your part in all this!
Someone will play a few matches and then buy $100-$200 of models in one week, tacklebox and all.
If that's not the God's honest truth....
I was that guy...
First few games I played, I kept thinking 'Man, I really suck at this. I don't think I'll ever buy any of the ships...'
Granted, I've kept my purchases most under control.
Hopefully, it means we'll see more frequent releases.

For sure, though my bank account might disagree with you! ![]()
I live in Montana, so yeah, I am jealous of that.
Obviously we dont know the inner workings of it all, but I would assume that if they have unprecidented sales, and then throw on top the upcoming hype from the soon-to-be films, and XWMG will likely see some serious love from FFG and the community.
Whoa, Montana you say, where at? I'm in Billings.

Missoula
Using everything from Jedi mind tricks to demonstrating the power of this fully armed and operational battlestation to get more players into the fold.
Missoula, of course. The gaming black hole that is eastern Montana-western North Dakota-northern Wyoming is unrelenting as ever.

You should try North Yorkshire, UK LOL

Not many people outside of Montana would understand that we can live in the same state, and still live 5 hours of drive time at 70mph apart. ![]()
Sorry about the 'black hole effect' man, believe me, I KNOW.
On a positive note though, XWMG is not only a great game, but it is a great game that is instantly recognizable, because c'mon it's Star Wars, and that makes it easier to get people who might shy away from gaming to sit down at the table and roll some dice! ![]()
You never know, they might just do this:

It has spread like wildfire in my gaming group. Someone will play a few matches and then buy $100-$200 of models in one week, tacklebox and all.
Can not think of a better way to spend an evening than a couple of hours of wargaming, now that's quality time!
Isn't a crowd in Montana considered to be more than six people on the same acre?

Seriously though, sometimes it feels like it.

You guys have small states. It's 1703km for me to drive to my Brother's house and he also lives in the same state. ![]()
But yes it is unsurprising that FFG has issues with keeping up with demand since they simply aren't setup for this kind of demand.

Talk like this reminds me just how stupidly huge the US is. If I were to start driving 1700 KM starting from my howntown smack-dab in the middle of the Netherlands, I'd end up in bloody Madrid.
The state of KY takes about 8 or 9 hours to cross.

I'm in Australia, not the US.
Reminds me of a joke I heard a long time ago.
A Maine farmer and a Texas rancher meet at an agricultural convention.
The Texan brags, "I can get in my pickup and drive all day and not reach the opposite side of my property."
The Maine farmer nods understandingly. "Ayup. I got a truck like that too."

+1 Aussie distances between places is scary. 5hrs+ for me to get to my state capital, 24hrs non-stop driving to get to my 'home town'. 2+ days to get to the Aussie Capital from where I am.
Hence why I try to get a good gaming base going where I am. We had 8 of a possible 10 players at our SC this past weekend. So that's not too shabby. Plus our LGS has got a Regional on June 14th. That should draw in a few out-of-towners, hopefully.

Apologies. Still ridiculously huge though.

Bohrdumb, I'm with you there. At first I blew chunks at figuring out maneuvers (bumping into everything that flies), and tactics all together. As I play more games, I feel I'm progressing -- slowly, but surely. Each new game, win or lose, is a learning experience. So I kept at it, because of my love of Star Wars and this game.
As for purchasing stuff, If I could, I would only buy the upgrade cards until the next wave comess out, of course.
Gotta have 'em all. ![]()
Good luck.
Getting back on topic, I think part of the issues with FFG keeping up with demand is the contents of each expansion. You've got to have the models, get them painted along with producing the flight stands. Have cards printed. Have cardboard printed and punched. It makes for a rather diverse box manufacturing wise. And only once all of that aligns do you get a successful reprint run. Doing it in small batches would enable them to better keep up with the demand at the cost of reduced profits. Doing bigger runs requires more capital as well as risk of stock sitting idle on shelves (potentially). All in all it makes for a tricky balancing act.
The state of KY takes about 8 or 9 hours to cross.
Luckily, most of my travel tends to be north-south. Where abouts in KY are you?
On topic, I couldn't be more excited about the popularity of X-Wing. I love Star Wars, I love board (/miniature) gaming, and X-Wing is just too perfect a blend. The hobby has been getting much more popular as of late, it seems, and with the wonderful mechanics and franchise theme behind it, X-Wing is a perfect storm.
It doesn't surprise me at all, and FFG deserve every bit of their success:
- "It's Star Wars"
- Simple and very cheap to get into (intially!) especially given the comparable price of a 40k army/codex
- Really tactical. Up there with Chess and Poker. If only it weren't for those never-to-be-sufficiently-accursed green and red square-based pyramids....
- Lots of background-driven rules and characters but not (a la Warmachine) forcing you to field any of them
- The best pre-painted miniatures I have seen. Bar none. The quality of models is good, but Citadel and Wyrd beat them, but I have never, ever seen pre-painted out the box stuff that looks this nice. Compared to D&D and Heroclix stuff...there's just no comparison.
