Playing Alone

By Jedhead, in X-Wing

So I was looking for a topic on this, and couldn’t find one, so here is my question:

What do you do when you are playing against yourself and it comes to the maneuver phase? I test builds out against myself when I can’t get an opponent, but the movement is obviously manufactured since I know exactly what my “opponent” is doing.

Does anybody have a solution for this, aside from leaving the room for a bit in between dial placements in hopes that I will forget what I did? I generally try to be “honest” and move as if I didn’t know what my opponent was doing, but since that isn't really possible it only goes so far. Sadly, even with preordained knowledge, I still manage to collide on occasion

Any suggestions would be much appreciated. :)

We need a new app.....

The X-Wing AI Opponent App

With this app, you take a photo of the unit on the board. Type in all relevant weapons and upgrades etc. Then press a button and let the app decide.

Try giving yourself a time limit to pick your maneuvers. The longer you stare at your dial the better it'll be ingrained in your short term memory probably.

Just posted this in another thread, so it's funny you should ask.

This doesn't have wave 3 ships, but it's still pretty good for helping test out builds.

It's a web based AI, that you can use to pick maneuvers for ships. It's pretty easy to beat, so don't expect a great test of your list. But it should give you a good base line to figure if something works or not.

You could always try to find games on Vassal.

Thanks, I will give this a try, perhaps. What was the name of your other thread so I can reference it? I don't know how I missed it the first time through, but I guess my forum browsing has been spotty as of late; fast and furious some days, and too busy to check on others.

Just remember: God sees you when you are playing with yourself.

That means no re-do's when hitting asteroids or rolling dice, and has no other interpretation.

I posted it in Advice for Beginners, but I had posted it at most 30 seconds before I saw this thread.

Wow, I must have felt the tremors through the force and then responded accordingly. That was actually my post in that thread that you followed up on as well.

Yeah it was :) I guess that I means I get to charge you double for my answers. :D

Will seventeen thousand do? Two now, and an additional fifteen once we reach Alderaan?

What do you do when you are playing against yourself and it comes to the maneuver phase?

Hit yourself on the head so you forget what dial you put down?

Not a bad idea. Or select my maneuvers with the blast shield down on my helmet. That would work, too.

Live play

Get a webcam and play with yourself. When you need to perform a manoeuvre, simply have the viewers vote on which one you should do.

Edit: play games against yourself.

EDIT: oops.. Vanor got it first.. sigh..

I once again strike in silence and slip back into the night...

Well, I took it for a couple of spins, and it did just fine. Probably about on par with when I play against myself. A decent test for a basic combat evaluation, but no master-level play.

Yeah it's not going to make for a ch alleging game, but it does make for a good baseline to judge your lists on. It's not a question of if you win, but by how much.

Don't worry about it so much. If you know where what the other guy is going to do you should know how to make the best moves each way.

I like the AI link because you don't need a dial for the opponent.. just work the AI and make your move... I like that I can use it on my phone or tablet.. Android is awesome and chrome is a blessing in disguise.. lol.. all my bookmarks on 3 differnent divices..

Dont do it. You'll go blind. :-)

Thanks for the A.I link, it's just what I needed! Great thread.

Actually you will probably test your skills better by playing against yourself than against most AIs. I know it is not completely possible to completely separate your decision making/knowledge when trying to play both sides but make logical decisions and a little role-playing (put yourself in the shoes of the Rebel or Imperial commander), assess your situation, determine what you want to do, consider what the enemy will do, adjust your plan and set your maneuver dials. Then, do the same for the other side. It is impossible to completely eliminate the insider knowledge and self-bias but try. Alternate which side you do first, or set the disadvantaged side's dials last. Play your list against different opponents. I made 10 lists for Rebels and 10 lists for Imperials, then I played each list against each opponent, then I looked at the stats to see which of my lists was (probably) the best overall. The more you play, the better. Likewise, the more different opponents you play against, the better you will know what to do in any given situation.

This is more or less what I try to do now. Like I said, it works out alright, I was just fishing for suggestions to see if people had any. The AI was a good suggestion, and one I will likely use some of the time, though I will play against myself in the future as well.

Of course, whenever possible, I will play a live opponent!

I find most AIs to be O-kay when I am just jonesing for a game but got nobody to play with. They are fun but not a real substitute for a human opponent... yet. However, when testing out squads to find their strengths/weaknesses, what formations/tactics to use, then I find that (if I cannot get someone else to play) I have to play both sides. And, as I said above, you have to play multiple games against multiple squads to have any real idea of how to use your squad and how it will fare in different situations.

Happy Gaming,

Chris

Oh, and ... don't play with yourself too much, or you'll need glasses! And those can be annoying, I've found :)
