Imperials have basically two competative gimmick lists the swarm varients and the high defense stealth device variants both of which are getting even more counters in wave 4. And it's not like either of those lists are dominating tournaments.

The tie is half the points of the x so it should be able to take it out. They match. Two attack vs. 2 defense and three attack vs.3 defense. And the x gets a measly 2 shield to help. The outer rim smuggler has 2 attack making it worthless against empire. You have to use it as a blocker and I'm not convinced 27 points is worth a blocker doing no damage.

No one uses fel's wrath so that shouldn't count. And like you said the x-wing is soon to have a couple more.

A single rookie pilot plus the astromech of your choice should be able to beat 2 academy ties unless of course the imperial pilot is better then the rebel pilot.

you cant put attack die against defense die 1 on 1, there are more hits then evades, your chances of rolling a blank on evade die is higher.

ok, so you say that tie can evade, giving him an auto evade. ok, but xwing can target lock and reroll all his misses.

and xwings and ywings can have droids that are like giving each ship a special ability on top of any pilot abilities, then throw in modifications, now who has the most options for builds?

i sat down the other day with my rebel ships and just kept working on lists, now i am an imperial player through and through, but i started working on rebel lists to shake things up, no one at the store would expect me to drop a rebel list, and you can have some crazy combo's.

Not to mention all those ships that the Empire has with 360° turrets and . . . dare I say it . . . the single strongest ship in the game; so strong it is broken . . . Fel's Wrath. The dude is amazing and can take on entire fleets by himself.

Actually given that a lot of the Empire troops are clones of Jango Fett- and Jango Fett was played by Temuera Morrison- the Empire are actually Space Maori.
