Playing with myself.....

By TomRK, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

Hello FFG community and welcome to my first posted topic.

Here I am without anyone to game against and wondering why I should even bother buying any of the Rulebooks. My true friends are not fans of such gaming, my brother is.....let's not go there.....and I am planning to leave Britannia for Canada starting with a 30 day trial visit sometime next year. Thinking of May time.

Moment silence for the poor, lonely me :( Wah! Wah! Wah!

:) An idea!

As I get ready to be rid of all my Games Workshop stuff I happened to get some inspiration from the Instinctive Behaviour in the Tyranid section of the Battlefleet Gothic: Armada book. So why not come up with adversaries and NPC's with either "Instinctive Behaviour" or "Dominant Personality".

Everything and everyone will have a pre-determined chart with how they will act in certain situations, with perhaps a bit of randomness thrown in to keep things interesting. While I am aware that Edge of Empire and Age of Rebellion don't use D6, a D6 can be used to determine such random behaviour or actions.

It will take some work to figure things out, and this idea covers all the RPG ranges not just the Star Wars ones, so feel free to use it yourself even if you play something else.

What do you all think of the idea?

Have you considered a play by post forum?

While what you suggest is possible, I know I would get bored and frustrated with it.

Someone should consider creating a topic that gives general advice for players that are having trouble finding a group to play with.

TomRK, I am not familiar with the source material you referenced so I cannot give you good advice on whether it will work in this game.

As for your lack of players, I'll try and give you some help there. As TBS suggested, Play-by-Post is a pretty good way of scratching that gaming itch at a slow and comfortable pace. I know there are several members of these boards that are part of some, hopefully any one of them has a spot open you can join in at.

There's a lot of Canadian and UK players on these forums as well, and I see a lot of "Looking for game in <city/state/country/region>" threads. You might have some luck putting one of those up.

Have you tried Meetup.com? I managed to find an EotE group using Meetup and we've been playing regularly for a while.

I haven't considered that, but I'm sure I've seen a post by someone who did that. It might be a good way to go.

My idea isn't perfect for sure, and I've just realized that NPC's will all need to know what they're doing as part of the game. If I make that up, then I'll know everything about everything and as you so aptly put it: "I would get bored and frustrated with it"

It would work with the creatures that inhabit a planet, but for actual characters it does leave a lot of "what ifs".

You know a herd of Cows isn't going to care if you trek through a field, but if you run shouting and screaming while firing a gun they're going to stampede. Either way, a bull will charge straight at you and try to gore you to death.

If you take a trek through a field a person might: avoid you, say hi if you pass each other, actively approach and introduce themselves, pull out a gun and attack. If you run shouting and screaming while firing a gun a person might: hit the deck, run away, curl up in the fetal position trembling, duck down and wait to take you down and disarm you or pull out a gun and shoot you. Then add to that other factors, such as if the person is alone or with company and how they would react and those around them would react. Before long you have an entire novels-worth of material on how one character might act/react in any given situation.

At which point the brain will likely go into meltdown. Not so bad with Stormtroopers, or Rebel troops, since the only character of importance is their leader and how they will act/react. There can be a pre-determined response to a leader dying. Stormtroopers would probably just continue fighting while Rebels might withdraw, dragging their leader with them while providing covering fire.

But enter individuals into the mix and the hard work would start.
