Objectives And Obstacles Wave

By FTS Gecko, in X-Wing

I've seen a few threads asking what the next waves releases could be for Rebel/Imperial ships. But why restrict our thinking to the two main factions? People have already discussed the possibility of a third faction for Bounty Hunter/Mercenary ships, and fighters like the Cloakshape Fighter, Supa Fighter and Preybird making an appearance, but what about a wave for mission objectives and/or obstacles?

We've got a fair few missions in the game now, and we're using tokens to represent things like asteroids, cargo containers, the senator's shuttle, freighters etc. How about a couple of models to replace these tokens? Then you've got things like sensor arrays, comms buoys, and automated turrets that could bring a new perspective to the game as well.

Some of these items are already being produced by third parties - maybe there's a lot of opportunities here for Fantasy Flight Games to expand the core rules?

Target/Objectives/Escorts:

• Asteroids (box of 6?)
• Asteroid Laser Battery (box of 4?)
• Proximity Mines (box of 4?)
• Sensor Array/Comms Relay/Satellites (box of 4?)

• Cargo Containers (box of 3?)
• Mobquet Transport
• C-3 Passenger Liner
• Modular Conveyor
• Modified Action Transport

A couple of models like these could make some of the mission games a bit more immersive and unique. If any one else would like to do some furious wishlisting, there's a rather comprehensive list of possibilities available here: http://wiki.rebelsquadrons.org/index.php/X-Wing_Alliance#Featured_Craft

I think one option should be Turbolaser turrets. Bring on the Death Star battles!

Absolutely - not just Death Star trench run re-enactments, either. Static turret emplacements could be an interesting addition to a number of missions - you could stage raids on dockyards, use them to protect satellite arrays etc.

What about 'Space station' box?

Like a card outline with model raised superstructure and turrets and dockingbay and such?

could be fun with some scenario's like surprise attack from one side and the other scrambling their fighters and ships...

Or even a big two table game of base defences where both sides have a station and attack the others while trying to defend their own... :D

Hmm.... I wonder if a modular Space Station kit could be feasible? i.e. a main superstructure that could be combined with Individually-sold but inter-connectable/exchangable parts for landing platforms, communications arrays, docking terminals, turbolaser towers, cargo holds etc to essentially put together a station that can be as small (or as big and as complex) as you want or can afford! :)

I love this idea and have been calling for something like this since I put my first ship on the table.

I sculpted my own astroids out of foam, and am currently building my own space dock/station board where the 'astroids' are represented by scaffolding and structure elements. Lots of sometimes teadious work so a FFG produced kit would be awesome.

Playing XWMG with/on iconic, themeatic, and visually striking game boards truely adds to the fun and excitement of the game. Both for the players themselves, and anyone who happens to walk by and goes, "Holy cow! This looks just like the movies! Can I play?".

This. This is what this game needs now.

Just a cursory look on ebay has turned up some interestingresults - gaming mats, third party versions of the Senator's ship, 3D floating asteroids, even turbolaser towers. There's clearly a market out there, and people are happy to jump on the bandwagon.

I'm going to go out on a limb and say it's only a matter of time before FFS gives us some official accessory and objective packs to go alongside the Imperial/Rebel forces...

If you go to your big box home improvement store you can buy lava rock. They are perfect for asteroids. You can add stands if you want, but I just set them on top of the cardboard asteroids

I've suggested "defensive satellites" or something like them in the past as something equal to a ship. While some may be stationary I can see them as highly maneuverable, if painfully slow, weapon platforms. They may have a weak primary weapon and die to a stiff breeze but could carry a number of different weapon systems.

When it comes to space "stations" isn't that already part of the game that some people hate for some reason? No real need for them until people can accept some Fortress strategies as being perfectly legit.

I don't think people would have issue with actual space stations. People hate YTFortress because it's a blatant exploit (considering 0 speed is a red manuveur) and thus against the spirit of the game, not because they don't like the mechanic of an emplacement. If you did the same thing with two 3 2 8 5 turbolaser towers I doubt people would have an issue with it.

And let those towers have actions besides all at a cost that is the same or possibly even lower.

I'm all in favour of more stuff like this.

There is clearly a market for it and i've bought somethird party pieces myself... i'm not obsessive fanboy but i'd rather buy FFG made pieces as i know the quality and customer support is excellent.

As an example i bought a set of six asteroids on ebay. They were not prohibitly expensive.

When they arrived they were chunks of lave rock of clear 'flight stands' of some sort glued onto laminated photocopies of the asteroid templates. They were find, functional and looked great but i've since remounted them on a spare set of official templates as they are a bit 'heavier' so less likely to fall over.

All third party pieces are a bit of a leap of faith and in the case of things like shuttles you have to paint them yourslelf.

I can paint ok but dont have the time or inclination these days. One of the big draws of xwing to me was *not* having to paint anything.

After 6 months or so of hindsight, some of the items on that list are more likely to appear as huge ships if at all...

I think all the suggested ideas are sound but i think you'd have to have a 'game add on' as one of them per wave.

I think an entire wave of them would hack off the 'deep space' die hards who only want to buy ships.

That's why I kind of like the way they released terrain in Wave 5. I started to get board with space rocks. Now the only problem is that not everyone will have the 6 debris cloud tokens because not everyone will buy wave 5 ships. Some might only buy 1 Wave 5 (though I think most that buy 1 Wave 5 ship will buy both).

Bring it all on! I'd buy it.

+1 for static defences. They should cost less than a starship, and have AGI 0. Could be placed on asteroids or on cardboard "space stations" on specific spots marked by a square. Space stations could be enhanced with shields and have some actions. Ex: target lock (focused fire?). At the moment missiles and torpedoes don't see much use in games (and bombers too), but may be useful against some stationary threats.

Yup i think some asteroid research stations and defences would really add to the game.

At the moment, playing the prototype interceptor mission looks a bit flat with tokens on card rocks... actual research stations clinging on like limpits or built into hollowed out rocks would be ace.
