A Green Squadron Pilot

+ Opportunist

+ Chardaan Refit

+ A-Wing Test Pilot Title

is the same cost as a Rookie Pilot.

Now, a GSP with no upgrades has a better dial, more actions, higher Pilot Skill, andgreater survivability than its Rookie cousin. Adding Opportunist allows you the choice of whether to trade in a partial dial or an attack die for this swap.

An A-Wing who is able to activate Opportunist every round is essentially playing with the following dial, with the option to go back to the standard A-Wing dial whenever they wish.

1 Turn (Red, as the stress is maintained)

2 Turn (White as previous stress is negated)
2 Bank (White)
2 Forward (White)

3 Turn (Red)

3 Bank (Red)

3 Forward (White)

4 Forward (White)

5 Forward (White)

Which is still a pretty good dial, all things considered. Better than the HWK's, at any rate.
Remember, this is a choice: if you need to go back to the regular A-Wing dial, you just lose 1 attack die until you return to this pattern.

As for further upgrading, the GSP build still has their EPT slot (thanks to the Title), which is on par with the Astromech slot in general (though stressful EPTs get in the way of Opportunist)

I forsee this as having a huge shift in the general metagame for Rebellious builds, and therefore their opposition.

What think ye?

I am also curious as to what effect C3P0 and R2-D2 (crew) will have on Han Shoots First builds, and which one ultimately resists the most damage.

I think that the rebel aces pack is going to do cool things for the b wing, and AMAZING things for the a wing. I am so excited to see the a wing become a more competitive ship. I think with wingman and opportunist, it's going to be even more awesome. K turn, then use opportunist? Yes please!

23 points for the en-masse, same as a HWK with Blaster Turret + Recon Specialist.

An A-Wing who is able to activate Opportunist every round is dependent on the opponent to not have a focus or evade token on them at the time, every round.

I will admit the possibility that I'm being over-skeptical about its reliability to give you an extra attack.

But I also feel like there's being a generous amount of gloss being applied in this post.

A fair point.

It was inspired by re-examining a Han Shoots First build as an alternative escort. They would theoretically concentrate fire on the guy who's already spent their token, being someone who has already been wounded by Han.

I mostly see Rookie Pilots snuck into fleets alongside higher pilot skills. These guys would in no way replace the Rookies in a Blue Thunder list (y'know, when the HLC-wielding Blue Squaddies would shoot AFTER the souped-up GSPs).

However, I am intrigued to note that a GSP with Squad Leader and Push the Limit only costs 22 points, and aids action economy for as cheaply as a Blue Squadron Pilot, though with fewer upgrade opportunities.

If you toss in PTL you're at the same price a Red Sqd.Pilot.

Sure having PTL means Opportunist is out unless there's a Wingman nearby or you swap in Expose.

and before you go some of you go "super hate" on expose, This is the Rebellion not the Empire. there are plenty of action sharing Pilots available. Expose is terrible for the Empire outside of Vader; the Rebellion on the other had has lots of pilots to make up for it through action sharing.

Sqd.Ldr , Lando , Cracken - Free Action (Lando - Any Action Bar)

Garven , Katarn - Focus Trading

Dutch - Free Target Lock

PTL - Free Action (Any Action Bar)

When you look at the PS differences it means you can take Boosts or TL's at a Higher PS similar to how some Empire players use their bombers to gain TL's.

I highly suggest Cracken or Sqd.Ldr since they would allow you to use Expose as your Free Second action which would be when you Proc / Activate PTL, giving you your 3rd action for the round.

This would result in a GSP having F/TL/Expose at 3A or 4A in range 1.

It also isn't bound by requirement of the target not having any Focus or Evade Tokens or cause stress.

And even if the Action Sharer goes down your GSPs still have PTL for Expose/Focus shots or other Double Actions.

Sure you tradeoff 1D for 1A but like I mentioned if you use Cracken and / or Sqd.Ldr you have the option to use Expose when the field potentially has better targets to TL or use Expose for.

And it is a ensured +1A whereas Opportunist does not unless the requirements are met.

-----

Long story short, unless the GSP is Wes Janson's "wingman" Opportunist might not be as awesome as expected since Token Stripping might not occur with other Pilots every turn.

Force the an opening (Expose)

-or-

Seize an opening (Opportunist)

for 4pts they both are dependant on the other Pilots they're supporting and whether or not those Pilots can support them in return.

---

Thought I'd be an Opportunist and Expose some areas where Opportunist is exposed as the potentially weaker option between Itself and Expose.... ;)

Why not take both expose and opportunist and use them as the opportunity presents itself?

Take 4 GSP's with expose, opportunist and the refit and try and stay out of arc.

Viable, probably not, fun? Definitely, fast paced, fly by the seat of your pants action.

Well, now you're at 17 + 4 + 4 = 25 points. You could just take a Rookie + R2D6 + opp for 26 points... and you have an action to modify it.

Math says that Expose + F on a base 2 attack is > F + TL. (1.88 vs. 2.25). But you're comparing that to 3F vs. 4N(aked) ... which is 2.25 vs. 2.00. Clearly the 3F is better. As such, you'd be looking for a second action somewhere in order to get that focus token. In the case of the rookie, you still have your action (since it wasn't used on expose), so your average hits rolled will be 3, quite a bit better than either option for the Green.

Yeah yeah yeah, this is the rebellion... there are plenty of ways to toss tokens around... blah blah blah... but then as soon as you lose a ship, you're no longer effective.

Oh pish, math.

Who cares about stodgy old math when you're about to swing four A-wings towards a group who are hopelessly out of arc and opening up on them with 5 die each, guns blazing.

Math, pfah! Fun! Fun I say!

The thought of an A throwing 5 dices does sound intriguing... 6 if you put Jan in there =P

I like the idea of tossing a Cluster missile in there :P 2 sets of 4 dice, with Jan and Oppurtinist :P would have to have Garven or Dutch though :P

I agree, this is one thing that has me thinking quite a bit. I like C-3PO better, I think, just for the random element, but both could have a huge impact, especially if paired with Chewie, PTL, the Falcon title, and a recon specialist. I guess you have to give up gunner to pull that off, but that is a lot of evasive potential on that Falcon.
