Third Party Templates

By Bohrdumb, in X-Wing Rules Questions

Just wondering what companies do templates that are FFG legal?

My FLGS carries Litko, but I didn't want to buy anything until I was certain.

Litko is legal, most of them are. I got mine from Applied Perspectives, Team Covenant and Cog0'two makes some as well.

The only trick is as far as the rules are concerned, is that if someone has an issue with the templates you're using, they can request that both sides use a pair of shared templates.

So if you have a set of Litko ones and the other person thinks they're off. He can ask that you both use his templates, or even yours. Even if they're off if both sides use them it's fair.

The templates are legal as long as they are the same size/distance as the the official FFG ones. Now an opponent can request that you use his (if his are official FFG) in a tournament.

I had the same question, and for tournaments, the 3rd party templates are legal. However, the 3rd party tokens are not.

Tournament Rules version 1.4/ Updated 10.10.2013

During tournament play, each player is required to use components included in official X-Wing products

with the exception of third party maneuver templates and range rulers, use of which is addressed below.
Range Rulers and Maneuver Templates
Minor variations in the printing process and the existence of third-party products may cause slight
disparities in the measurements of some rulers and templates. Before a tournament match begins,
any player may request that a single range ruler and/or set of maneuver templates be shared for the
duration of the match. Both players must agree on the set of maneuver templates to be used, as well as
which side of the range ruler to use. The TO will have the final say in any decision.”

I suppose that is technically correct, although I have never had anyone question or complain about 3rd party tokens - or templates, for that matter, but I would expect someone to fuss about templates before tokens, which are purely cosmetic.

I got into a debate recently at a store event with a friend over whether my sideways-modified B-wings were tournament legal. He argued that since I had mounted them sideways, they fell under the rule about "The size and shape of a ship model cannot be modified in any way."

I countered that, in fact, the size and shape of the B-wing were completely unchanged - merely the orientation of the model, which is not mentioned, had changed. ;)

Either way it was moot, because he was just messing with me, but my point is that I have used 3rd party templates, tokens, and my customized sideways B-wings at everything from local hole in the wall shop tournaments to Worlds last year at FFG, and nobody has ever said one word about them. Well never one negative word; occasionally you get "hey how did you do that?" or "cool templates, where did you get those?" or something.

It's something to be aware of - I always have more Bs in my bag, in case anyone did randomly complain, I have a bin of regular tokens in addition to my acrylic ones, but I have yet to run into a single opposing player who ever felt the need to call shenanigans over something like that.

So, are the acrylic stress tokens In FFG prize support for tournaments "official" x-wing products? ;)

I'd guess that the rule is there more for marketing reasons then anything else. Want everyone to see the tokens and such that come with the ships, rather then 3rd party acrylics.

I actually find that pretty hard to believe, if they allow the 3rd party templates, which larger and more visible.

My honest guess is that the reason it doesn't mention the tokens is they didn't think they needed to - because the the tokens have no direct impact on gameplay; they're a visual aid only, as opposed to an actual tool for measurement.

Now I wouldn't be surprised to see FFG market some of their own - unless they're determined to just keep them as the occasional game night or tournament prize - but I honestly think it just never occurred to them that anyone might object to them, since the whole question over the 3rd party templates is the fact that they sometimes vary a bit from the cardboard ones in curve or length. (But as FFG pointed out, the cardboard ones vary from one another in curve and length, so it all works out.)

I seriously doubt, with the dark printing on a black background on dark cardstock, FFG thinks they're selling any core sets because of the sexy focus tokens they put out. :D

Bit of an unrelated question:
Would a 2nd party template be one you make yourself, or one where you are the templates?

I think one you made yourself.

The 1st party is FFG

The 2nd is yourself

Any other interested party would be a 3rd party... though I suppose you could argue that your template maker is a 3rd party and your token maker is actually a 4th party if they were made by different companies...

:D
