Reading through the forums I've noticed quiet a few people are opposed to the addition of EU ships though I don't know why, without the EU universe we most likely wouldn't be playing this game today. Inspired to re-read my x-wing series of novels due to this game has given me an idea of re-releases of old ships. Imperial and Rebel officers on capital ships will often have a personal fighter craft that has been upgraded such as an Interceptor equipped with shields and a hyper drive, Tie Bombers with shields and Tractor Beams, or Long Probe Y wings capable of extended hyper drive flights, additional sensors/shielding. FFQ could temper releases of EU ships with these high cost upgraded traditional ships to keep everyone happy. Sort of what there doing with Aces. Just an idea I would hate to see this game end anytime soon.
Officer Class Tie Fighters/Interceptors
The problem with releasing ships such as the Longprobe or a hyperdrive capable interceptor is that the ships have been specifically modified for long-range capabilities…at the expense of dogfighting. They are reconnaissance specialists or personal courier ships, respectively, not space-superiority fighters.
This is a dogfighting game, so they would be hurt badly in that sense. In fact, if memory serves, the Longprobe sacrificed cannon power for additional sensors and storage, and had locked the ion turret in the forward position. I would be unwilling to pay even a small amount for a Y-wing with even weaker firepower and no turret.
Longprobes and hyperdrive squints are both craft that have been modified to provide bonuses in areas that have nothing to do with combat, so they just wouldn’t translate well in game terms.
Longprobe could be doable:
BTL-A4 LongProbe
Y-wing only. Title.
Your upgrade bar loses the [turret] icon and gains the [system] icon.
Cost would be 0 or maybe -1. Y-wings can function fine naked, so you probably would not want a card that everyone throws on to reduce cost, even when they have no intention of using a system upgrade.
Of course, I think a better Y-wing title would be:
Replace one of your [torpedo] upgrade icons with a [bomb] upgrade icon. Cost 0.
As for hyperdrive-fitted TIEs, you could have a modification with a negative cost that reduces the number of green maneuvers available to represent additional mass reducing maneuverability, say (just spit balling here):
Hyperdrive Retrofit
TIE Interceptor only. Modification.
Treat 2 [right turn] and 2 [left turn] maneuvers as white maneuvers.
Cost: -1
Or maybe:
Hyperdrive Retrofit
TIE Interceptor only. Modification.
Treat 2 [right turn], 2 [left turn] and 4 [straight] maneuvers as white maneuvers.
Cost: -2

... I must be missing something, because so far I've heard little but cheers over the inclusion of fighters like the Defender and Phantom TIE's, or the new Imperial and Rebel Aces including quite a few EU customization options.
Actually, I think that there is already lots of oppertunity for modification.
If you want to represent a long-prob Y-wing, just don't put a turret on the ship. In my gaming group turret-less Y-wings are very popular.
There isn't much point on simulating hyperdrives, or longer range, but you can put an extra shield on any ship you want without.
I am not opposed to further upgradability, and I think will definately be more in the future. I would be careful about giving system upgrades to every ship we want them to have. The fact that only two ships can take them is one of the things that makes those ships cool.
In general I am not apposed to EU, though I might be one of those people that after reading my posts you would think I am apposed to EU. My problem with EU is this idea of Star Wars Cannon that we need to match the X-wing game to all the different EU works. Technically the X-wing game is EU, so was the X-wing and TIE Fighter PC games, so were the role playing games, as well as all the stories and source material printed in and about the Star Wars Universe. I get that part of the fun of Star Wars is taking seriously. We like to pretend that it is consistent, like there is a "real" Star Wars Universe out there. Not "real" so much in the sense that we think anything in Star Wars really acutually happened. But we do like to pretend that there are some Star Wars "Truths" that are in some way true at least within the context of Star Wars. The problem is that Star Wars is fictional, and it is the product of dozens if not hundreds of creative minds. It does all tie toegether to some degree in another, but that just means there is constancy between different Star Wars products. It does not mean (despite that there is some evidence that Lucas Tried to do this) that their is consistancy across all Star Wars Products.
I get that their are things we might think are cool about Star Wars that doesn't come from the 3 movies. (To bad we never got any prequals
) And we would like to se these cool things in our game. The question that must be asked is how do those interact with the X-wing game. Will they work?
For example, since the first days of these forums people have tried to come up with more ships (or upgrades) that they like from somewhere else in the Star Wars Univers (it wasn't even always EU stuff). They relied on information or precidence that was never intended for this game and tried to apply it to this game. That is not inherantly bad, but if you let your adherance to one piece of Star Wars lore be more important that how it fits in the game then you are suggesting something that is already broken (in the game)
Well I appreciate the response and your points are valid. As to the expansion into the EU the more popular ships are in production or have been released. They will have to start reaching into more obscure parts of the universe which I personally love but could turn off some of the other games, hopefully not though. In my mind this game will continue on for years with plenty of expansions. What I was getting at was ships that come with pilot cards providing new pilots, that come with a additional shield for the bomber/tie interceptor, that are costed onto the ship, say an additional five points for the shield, that allows you to then add an additional shield modification on, giving you 2 shield, sure its a point heavy ship but could be quiet fun. Simulating officer ships doesn't just have to be the long probe. And as to giving a ship hyper drive this could include an all around engine upgrade providing an alternate dial for the officer class ship, with shields, although again at a higher point cost. Just spit balling ideas to added to the longevity of the game
Modified ships are already in with the modification mechanic. FFG's approach to updating existing ships seems to be repaint packs like the Aces, and maybe they'll do a resculpt for the Advanced too at some point.
I don't think people are against adding EU ships on principle: the Defender and Phantom are probably welcomed and the amount of TIE Avenger customs I see for the Advanced mean that there's some demand for that ship too. I think the objection is that there are a lot of EU ships that don't look Star-Warsy (when I go up against the Empire I generally want to see at least one ball cockpit) or look downright awful and not many that are as pretty as the Phantom. There aren't many good EU ships in the era. The Defender, E-wing, Phantom and Z-95 are about it. Beyond that there's the K-wing, the Starviper (Virago) and a few of the less funky TIEs. Beyond that, not much pretties left.
That being said, I'd love to see the DIE-wing for the sheer hilarity of a

ship with a Y-wing manuveur dial.
How can anyone hate on EU in the game? First of all we would be done like you said because we would have no more ships, and second of all, without EU we would have barley any pilots. Luke, biggs, han, lando, chewie, boba, darth and the other basics but what about tycho, fel, turr, howlrunner, and most of the others? I don't remember their names in the movies! Whatever haters have fun with just like ten out of like 50 pilots.
