Squad Critique/Advice

By trevor.eubank, in X-Wing

Of the following two lists which would you find to be a bigger threat and who would be your first target in both?

List 1:

Wedge w/ Swarm Tactics

Roark w/ Ion Turret

Rookie

Blue w/ Fire Control System

List 2:

Luke w/ Swarm Tactics

Roark w/ Ion Turret

Rookie w/ R1 Astromech

Blue w/ Fire Control System

Also any list critique/changes are welcome.

Typical tactics is letting Roark fly off by himself and flying the other three in formation allowing Roark to hopefully get behind/out of attacking arcs of other squad. He will let someone become PS 12 and then Wedge/Luke will Swarm the other to allow all but Roark to fire before most other competing squads.

Wedge has better offense, and is the obvious first target in that list. I think I actually prefer the Luke list by a slight margin; among other things, I actually don't know who I'd shoot first there--although I think I'd probably try to get to Roark or take out the B-wing, either one is kind of a win for you.

I wouldn't quite fly Roark off by himself, though; he wants to be able to contribute his damage and control to the same target or targets the rest of the squad is working on. Just keep him a range increment or so back from the rest of your gang, and if your opponent runs after him, go ahead and take off like a scalded duck and force your opponent to turn and follow (exposing his flank to your Xs and B).

One possible change would be to pull the astromech away from the Rookie and use it to purchase Nien Nunb for Roark. It opens up his straight-4 maneuver, which is very handy to have if your opponent targets Roark.

Well, first off, on List 2, I would drop the R2 unit (assuming that's what you mean by R1.. But I would drop the R5 as well). This puts you at 99 points, allowing your little guys to move before everything besides swarms (at PS1). So you can get your actions, and then deny them theirs... And then Roark + ST up to shoot before everyone too!

I would probably take that over the Wedge list. Namely because of target priority. Everyone is going to kill Wedge first in list 1. And then you're going to lose your ST as well and be shooting at 12 4 2 instead of 12 9 9 4. From there, the B will probably be the second target, leaving you at 12 4.

On the other hand, the B wing is likely the first target in list 2. I say this because people are afraid of shooting at Luke since he is 50% more durable than a regular X wing, but doesn't do any additional damage. Meanwhile, B wings with their BR and FCS can do more damage than Luke. Some people will probably still shoot Luke first (myself included) if he's presented as a better shot. If that happens, Luke is more likely to live another round than Wedge, so you'll get to shoot 12 8 8 4 for an additional turn. But in the case where they attack the B wing, you're likely to still be able to swarm him with Luke to get his shot off before he dies, giving you an extra attack overall, and then you're left at 12 8 8, or 12 12 4 depending on your alignment and their squad.

Btw, I don't agree with your tactics. Roark isn't going to be able to get behind anyone - he's not actually maneuverable. And if they choose to shoot him first, then whoopty doo, you'll blow up his ships that do damage while he blows up your support ship. Not typically a good idea in 100pt squads. So I would send him with your main force, but probably a bout 1 range behind them. Being there can mess with their K turn ability if they choose to do that, and he'll also be able to ionize someone that'll just float into a collision, and then you'll move past him, preventing him from shooting that turn.

Edit: Gah, Ninja'd!

Thanks. I definitely meant R2 Unit not R1. I was leaning toward the 2nd list as well with Luke and like the addition of Nien as well. Though initiative could help.

I'm planning to run the squad this weekend at a local Charity tournament, so we'll see how it goes.

If you're playing either combo the "desired" Roark target should be the nameless X-Wing or B-Wing with the other getting Swarm Tactics from the named X-Wing. There may be times when you want/need to be shooting 12/12/4/2 but a lot of the time shooting 12/9/9/4 will be better.

R2 usually doesn't do much for an X-Wing unless you have something else stressful to do with it besides k-turn.

Fly Roark by himself.... Oh, forget about it because I'm just echoing what has already been said twice before.

Although it may not be the right call the only other thing to suggest could be swapping the Ion Turret plus some of the other upgrades for a Blaster Turret and Recon Specialist or Moldy Crow. This gives you a little added damage potential at the cost of the control aspect. If not for the shooting bonus Roark provides I'd say a Y-Wing with Ion Turret could serve as well.
