Shuttle and Collisions

By Kyoss, in X-Wing Rules Questions

Hi all, my first thread on this board, and (maybe) a rather easy one for you all to answer.

Recently in a game i was flying a shuttle and wondered about collisions.

Since the shuttle has movable parts,

am I allowed to move those parts whenever I want to avoid a model-collision,

and to force a model-collision?

In the game I talk about, I moved the wings up before moving, so I could get past a narrow spot and avoid the collision with an enemy ship.

Afterwards i folded the wings down, so the chances for his ships were higher to collide with the shuttle.

Is that allowed?

Thanks all in advance

Collisions with a ship only matter when it is the bases that try to occupy the same space. When bases are involved its called "overlapping". The models themselves don't cause overlapping. It suggests removing a peg from the ship's stand if you have interference with the models when they are in close proximity to one another.

Its on p. 17 in the rulebook under Plastic Figures Overlapping

Well... "removing a peg" doesnt cut it against the shuttle. Unless you mount it on 4 pegs and the other ship on one peg.

If its a friendly game just remove the shuttle model until it gets in a position with some room around it again because ultimately the model doesnt really mean anything in game terms, just the base.

The models themselves are only there for the visual WOW factor and to make it easy to identify the various ships, they have no effect on the actual mechanics of the game. As far ad the rules go, only the base matters, you could have cheese puff mounted on a flight peg and it would make no difference to the rules. Might be annoying to your opponent, but that is another story.

It's worth noting here that the tournament rules actually explicitly forbid removing a ship from the base. It's a very strange restriction that I don't think I've ever known a TO to enforce - and most actively and intentionally disregard - but it is there.

This was done at nationals last year where they decided they wanted all of the pieces to have a ship attached to the top. It was a visual thing and i'm sure has roots in a marketing strategy.

Worlds would be no fun to watch if all of the ships were just the square bases, the same goes for games like Warhammer 40k. It would be no fun to watch battles if the figures were their default grey.

I don't think anyone's questioning that you should have the ships to play, an in play. It certainly makes for a better overall experience.

But the rule basically prevents you from removing a ship due to size issues and physical (not game) collisions, because they require that the ship be on the base at all times. That creates a major hassle in the middle of a game for no real benefit, which is why the TOs I know tend to disregard it.

Your taking the line too literally. It means the ships have to be no the bases to play, but the same paragraph explicitly says that if 2 miniatures are getting in each other's way to adjust the number of flight pegs till they don't, which is not possible unless you remove the ship temporarily. "At all times" just means you have to put the ship back on again, you can't play without an actual miniature on the base.

I think maybe now you're taking me too literally :P

Most players I know would rather temporarily remove the ship from the base, and then replace it once the traffic jam has cleared. That's been the standard approach pretty much everywhere I've played, but it is not permitted on the rules.

That's what I was referring to.
