Overlapping and Landing on an Asteroid

By voidreturn, in X-Wing Rules Questions

I played a game recently where I maneuvered a ship such that I moved through an asteroid and hit his ship. Upon backing up my ship, I had to stop on the asteroid. I rolled 1 die and took the appropriate damage.

My opponent argued that you are supposed to roll 1 die for the template overlapping as well as 1 die for landing on the asteroid.

According to the FAQ (page 4, question 2), it says that only 1 die is rolled for multiple asteroids. That is, if you hit 1+ asteroids or land on one, roll 1 die.

So was I supposed to roll 1 die for the asteroid strike or 2?

One. Although it doesn't address your situation directly, the FAQ you cited covers it adequately. You would, however, not get an attack, as per the rules for ending up on an asteroid.

Actually had an issue with this last night. My opponent contended that landing on an asteroid did not preclude you from shooting, if the front of your ship was off. Normally, I trust him so I didn't make a fuss, but I'm pretty sure you wouldn't get a shot at all, correct? Or not?

Just going to quote the rules on this:

When overlapping an obstacle token,

the ship stays where it lands (on top of the token).
A ship that is overlapping an obstacle token during
the Combat phase cannot attack any ship but
may be targeted by other ships as normal.
So no, ships on asteroids can't shoot at all

That was my understanding. Thanks for the confirmation.

Only advantage to that situation is that if your front end is off the rock, you should be able to maneuver clear next round without rolling for another collision and losing your action again.

Okay just got to ask this here.

So you land on an Asteroid and the front of you ship actually clears. Next turn you Movement Template when place in front of your ship does not overlap the Asteroid so you are clear and do not have to roll for damage correct?

Now if you were unfortunate enough to land in the exact center of a big Asteroid. When you Movement Template is placed in front of your ship it starts out overlaps the Asteroid. You would now have to make a second attack roll getting yourself clear right?

Well, it is not actually an attack roll, but other than that, yes.
