- Sharpie paint pens (black, red, lime, aqua, etc.) to paint the edges of the tokens, including painting matching blue/red target locks the same color

I tried this...but it seems the oil based paint gets soaked into the cardboard. Did you give it more than one coat? And/or use something as a sealer before painting the edges?

Also, I highly recommend doing some pairs of target locks in the same color, but different from other target lock pairs. A-B target locks with green edge, C-D with Blue edge, etc.

With all this talk about Imperial Aces, Rebel transport, Tantive IV, Wave 4, or Rebel Aces, I am curious what you guys have done/plan to customize your current fleet.

Are you perfectly content with the ships they way they come out of the box?

Maybe just a repaint?

Or did you order a bunch of stuff from Shapeways just for your scenarios?

What have you done, and why?

For me:

- Repainted a few ships, and touched up a few more.

- Sharpied all the edges of every token, maneuver template, and ship base. Really takes away the cardboard feel. (green tokens get green Sharpie, red get red, blue get blue, and everything else gets black)

- Brushed on a bit of rubber cement on the bottom of the stands to help them stick to the table better. (also, it can easily rub off if I ever decide on a different approach)

- Sprayed all of my maneuver dials with varnish. 3 times. Also cut out tiny circles out of card stock to put between the parts of the dial. (Protects them all really well. I don't have to worry about myself or friends wearing the dials down by not using an 'Oreo' motion.)

- Being a cheap bastard, bought a yard of fabric from Walmart to act as a 'Star field.'

- Plano case to hold everything.

- Deck Box + card protecters.

So what about you guys?

What have you done?

• Colour coded the ships to their manouver disk: on the ties painted the top hatch different colours - purple, gold, black, grey and the centre pin of the disks to match. Rebel ships got a full paint job to colour match.
• Painted engine glow.
• Custom asteroid field out of volcanic pebbles from a local beach, mounted on acrylic rod and bases.
• Custom card playmat made from 2 sheets of A1 black cardstock paper from HobbyCraft; airbrushed with some stars and planets.
• Fishing tackle bag with boxes cut to fit the ships and cards.

Not much in the grand scheme of things really.

On those token edges, did you use the water-based paint Sharpie or the oil-based paint version for them? Great tip, thanks!

I've done the same thing with my Target Lock tokens and Number Tokens, but since I have a full set of target lock letters from A to X, I painted the back side of each set black, so there's no confusing a token that happens to be wrong side up.

I wanted a more compressed and less cumbersome storage solution, as I'm mainly mucking about on my bike.

Also, it had to be low cost, because I'm such a cheapskate.

Bought a $35 alu case, a $20 mattress, and started cutting .

The foam area is 41 x 29 cm. Top layer depth is 5 cm and bottom layer is 3 cm.

This case should last me good a while.

I also needed a solution for transporting the game mat.

Having it in one hand while biking was getting troublesome.

Bought a $1 pack of velcro tape and $2 worth of beaver nylon.

Cut and sewed this water resistant tube, with materials to spare.

is there any 'stickiness' to the dials with the clear coat on them?

did you clear coat both sides? and both top and bottom discs?

does the washer make them easier to rotate or is it just to keep them from rubbing?

Once the gloss coat has dried, there is no stickiness at all, at least with the brand I've been using (Rustoleum 2x Coverage). It leaves a nice shiny coat that almost looks like plastic.

Yes, I coat both sides of everything. Make sure to let the first side dry completely before flipping them, or they can stick to the surface you paint them on and peel the paper off a bit. Placing them on wax paper should help with that.

The nylon washer does make them easier to rotate, and if they get too free you can squeeze the plastic center piece together to tighten it up a bit. I've had several people comment on how much easier my dials are to rotate (that didn't sound quite the way I intended ...)

I paid almost $200 for a board game, all said and done. that along should constitute weird
